Slash tone....and more?
« on: August 02, 2005, 01:12:32 PM »
Been looking at your great pickups and am considering a bridge pup replacement for my Epi LP. I am a massive admirer of Slash's tone and playing, and was wondering what you guys think would be a suitable pup?

Think the tone on "Paradise City" (that deranged snarling rhythm and  solo tone) and "Think about you". The tone sounds deranged and probably doesn't need much gain, but I'd also like the pickup to be able to "gain up" for something heavier and meatier. Am I asking the impossible?

Suggestions and advice would be great, fantastic comany and forums you've got here. :D

Welcome to the forum too :D

Excellent, the only problem with your pickups is that I keep hearing different amazing sounding clips and can't bloody decide.

Thanks for your suggestion, can the mules gain up for a chunky sound as well? I'll also see if I can find some riff raff clips.

Yes I can get my Mule loaded LP Goldtop to sound monsterous but then again I use 2 JCM800s in stereo too
Some players prefer more gain on tap from the pickup but I find that so long as I pick harder I'm fine.

I got both a Mule set and a Riff Raff neck (for another guitar).
Both will lead you into the Slash territory. The Riff Raff and Mule neck are close when recording them. The Riff Raff has just a touch more treble bite, a touch less round and sweet tone, but they are very close . A touch more rock for Riff Raff neck, a bit more blues for Mule neck.

For what you want, I can't imagine another choice than a Set of Mule (Alnico IV).

i've had some pretty close-to-Slash results with the Alnico IV Mule in the neck of my Epi SG. a touch of Wah helps i find. half a bottle of Jack Daniels probably makes a difference too

Doesn't he use SD Alnico 2's?  So why not get a BKP humbucker with alnico 2's?

I have an Alnico IV Mule in the bridge position of my Epi LP, check out some of my clips in the players section... I placed an order for the neck Alnico IV Mule so that should be in my LP soon! I'l do some clips of them, maybe doing Paradise City just for you  :P however the solo's wont be as good

That would be awesome, I'm definatley looking into getting the Mules although the riff raff is tempting...

Alnico IV sounds a bit like Alnico II but without the bass mush of an alnico II :!:

Alnico II is the poor mans Alnico IV.It's also half the price so I'll let you make your own mind up on that one
Anyway, Alnico IV does perform very differently, it's gor better balance across all frequencies and a touch more power too. Also original PAFs used Alnico IV, along with II and III but the IVs are widely regarded as the best tone. It's my favourite Alnico too!

Slash does use A2 pickups -- or claims to.! :)   The man has great tone, but I'd echo the suggestions of A4 Mules to get there.  (Haven't heard enough Riff Raff clips to say, there.)

I got my neck Alnico IV Mule today and the install went smoothly unlike last time   Wow! Cleans it sounds so full and lively.. overdriven solos are nice and smooth but still defined, I'll record some stuff at the weekend! The only problem is that now my bridge pickup doesnt sound very lively clean, I need to get the balance between them better I think. Get Mules!

Get Mules!

The band Gov't Mule had (or used to have at least) a T-shirt that asked "got mule?"  -- a phrase US-based readers would link to the "got milk?" advert campaign there.  Perhaps BKP needs a "got Mules?" shirt! :)
