i've got nothing against drummers... :)
Absolutely ; drummers are rare creatures to find when you are putting a band together, it's we guitarists that are 'ten a penny' .... :)
For the record ; the last ( 7 piece ) band I played in relied upon the drummer as a sort of musical arranger / constructive critic. I also feel that whilst one can learn / teach yourself the guitar on a basis of 'more hard work than talent' - the drums seem ( for me ) to be a " you've either got it or you haven't " kind of skill.
:)
i'm not sure...
you can build a flawless technique based on dumb work but if you've got nothing else you'll always sound like scheet... :D
Yes, I was assuming there was at least some inherant creative ability and originality / artfulness from which the would be guitarist had to launch from ; as listening to " flawless technique " never had the 'wow' factor for me in isolation from inventiveness / character e.t.c. It just seems that even with 'Joe public' - more folks can strum through a basic song, than can sit at a kit and lay down a solid yet
interesting rhythm.
Also I know / have met more guitarists this last few decades that went into it ( with whatever degree of success ) for the pose or kudos afforded to that instrument by the public ; but the drummers I have met all
seem to have gone into it purely for the music - and that love of the drums being based in the fact that they had an irrepressible sense of rhythm - that needed an outlet. They have just come across as being more concerned as to how they contributed / sounded in the bigger picture, and not how they looked on stage.
Drummers as a ( rarer ) species, seeming to be more concerned with being a good conduit for the music, rather than having a penis extension. No surprise that 'guitarist jokes' seemed to be aimed at the topic of pricking the bubble of vanity - and drummer jokes at re-enforcing the ( allegedly ) less complicated psyche, required to sit behind us lot and patiently lay down the essential base we may be too often in danger of taking for granted .
