Indeed, when I ran a marathon in 07, I actually gained weight (all the pasta parties after training). It's been really bad on the joints and I only made it through with pain killers, REALLY BAD.

I suggest to support the muscle build and weight loss, do it like me and go to Bikram Yoga, that is in a hot room and I tell you, it's tough, but does you good and there are many nice girls to motivate you, too

Cheers mate - sounds like good advice. I got a nasty football related knee injury a few years ago and every time my weight goes over 13st 7lbs I really struggle with running - it gets to the point where I can't walk up or down the stairs without a lot of pain. I'm not that old either!!

Where do you live?

It sounds good, I've tried a bit of yoga in the past and quite liked it (there were lots of women, but most were even older than me  :(  ).

But I'm not sure my back could take it now - I $%&#ed it up somehow a few years ago and developed the habit of sitting/slumping really badly to stop it hurting.  I couldn't do any type of situps anymore because they hurt my back, and now my stomach muscles have totally gone to sh!t.  I've got so little strength and flexibility in my "core", it's an absolute joke.

(Maybe we should start a new Hunter's Health Tips thread!  :) )

It's a common misperception that you couldn't do Yoga with a bad back or bad knee. The opposite is the case, yoga will heal your posture and strengthen your back and knee muscles, creating a core stability that will remove your pain over time. Through the heat, you're also supported in terms of flexibility (and you sweat more), so that it helps pushing yourself that little bit further everytime you go.

Sometimes there are older ladies, but well enough of them are in their 20s and 30s, and they look after themselves rather well  :)

Here is a list of all studios worldwide, maybe there is one close to you: www.bikramyoga.com

Alternatively, there are some independent studios that do the same 26 postures routine in the hot room, but call themselves "Hot Yoga" (to not having to pay royalties to Bikram, the guru).

I'm sure there's gonna be one of either within reach. Go min. 3 times a week and things will significantly start to change after 1-2 months.

Oh man, really? Haha, I used to work for consumer electronics giant S**Y and we called the Basingstoke office "Boringstoke" LOL - guess you heard that one before though ;O)

I couldn't find any BY studios near you, closest might be Brighton, but that's a stretch too far. Maybe you can check if a studio near you does Bikram method. Just stay clear of those esoteric La-La meditation yoga thingies, they don't do much for your body or muscle build as Bikram does. Hatha Yoga is similar, just not hot. It should be a studio that sees itself more as a sports facility rather than the ying-yang yaddayadda.

There's one pretty close to me in Balham.

I may check it out, but you know what I'm like, scared of trying new things or going to unfamiliar places....

That's gonna stop around the 3rd posture, by then you'll have some other problems to think about, e.g. to survive the remaining 23

But do try it. Starter weeks are cheap and although it is a real torture, you will feel great after the 90 minutes, really great!

Yeah, I'll feel great so long as they keep pumping me full of painkillers when I'm lying in traction in the hospital!

 heard that one a few times. I don't find it too boring though. I live in a fairly quiet part of the town and find stuff to keep myself occupied with. There's been quite a bit of development in the town over the last few years so there are a few more places to eat/drink etc although I don't venture into town much these days.

Nice baby, and the dad is pretty, too! You should join one of these casted poser boy bands and become rich and famous, then share it all with us, your real friends  :D

I thought on my part, I'd share my new self - having lost 16Kgs now since April, tataa!

Maybe I should join a boy band. I could certainly do with the money and a week of fame, but after that I guess I would be fed up. Better to be a high school teacher. I'm no great singer though, but luckily you don't need to to be in a boy band  :D

I must say Hunter. You're looking mighty fine yourself and ROCK!

I love how this has turned out to be an all health thread  :D

Quite funny when big bad rocknrollas are talking about yoga. That aside I do like yoga myself. I've only tried the Astanga version, but it was great. I did two weeks of intensive yogaing (twice a day) a couple of years ago in India. Man my flexibility sky rocketed after those two weeks. Definitely recommendable.

I still do a bit of yoga from time to time and even though I've forgot most of the poses I still enjoy it.
