Pickup advice - aggressive sound for all mahogany guitar?
« on: September 28, 2007, 06:15:10 PM »
Hey everybody. I gave up on a blackmachine for now and got another cheap guitar, a Jackson SLSMG. They are an amazing deal so now that I have two of them I want to put Bareknuckles in one of them.

The guitar is a mahogany neck through mahogany wings with an ebony fingerboard, and has a slim body. I have one already with Seymour Duncan Blackout active pickups in it and while it sounds great in drop C and D standard, it gets pretty muddy around B and Ab so I was looking for a set of BKs that could avoid that, since now that I have two, one will be in B standard or lower all the time.

So what would you guys recommend? Nailbombs? Warpigs? I really like the tone Sikth has going and I know Pin plays Nailbombs, so I would tend to lean that way, but there is a big difference between my guitar and his.

my friend has a 7 string ibanez RG w/ custom brazilian mahogany body
i briefly played it when it was loaded with warpigs
pretty clear and fat, but now it has a painkiller on the bridge position and it sounds a lot more aggressive and tighter without loosing the warpig thickness
if you  like that hard edge of ceramic pickups, you'll love it
sounds close to the gibson 500t he has in another guitar, but has a lot more clarity on the midrange
the 500t is just a bit more aggressive, but has a ton of muddy mids and it's bass is a bit looser
the painkiller is dense and "in-your-face"

Yeah mahogany has a lot of lows so you have to be careful what you put in it.  I think I'd probably go with Painkillers in a solid mahogany body too.
Real men turn their volume to 11!

My ibanez isn't mahogany, but I play A-E-A-D-F#-B tuning and miracle man is GREAT!
