Advise on replacement bodies/necks needed
« on: September 30, 2007, 08:34:50 AM »
So, if I want to replace a neck or a body on a bolt-on guitar, what do I have to pay attention to?

Let's say on a strat with 21 frets, will a 22 fret neck fit as well?

Are all the fender neck pockets the same size, so I mean can you just take a neck from a Tele and bolt it on a Strat and/or  vice versa?

Which metrics of the old/new guitar parts do I need in order to do this right?

Thx for all help!

Yes, as long as it's the same scale length (25.5").  For a 22-fret neck, the fingerboard should have an extension which sits above the body so the actual main part of the neck is the same length as a 21-fret neck.

No, most Strat necks have a rounded end and most Tele necks have a square end.  A Strat neck will go in a Tele OK, but it leaves gaps in the corners of the neck pocket (which can be covered with a scratchplate).  To put a Tele neck on a Strat, the neck pocket will need a bit of surgery.

Basically, as long as you use Fender licensed parts like Warmoth, WD or Allparts it shouldn't be a problem getting necks and bodies which fit together - of course some neck pockets may be slightly loose and some may be slightly tight, but that's wood for you.  :)

I guess there's no point hoping you'll buy my 6-pound Tele body on eBay then?

hmm, actually Philly, what would be a good weight for a swamp ash tele?

I mean I know for whole guitars, but just the body ...?

Looking at the bodies on Warmoth's "Showcase" page, they have swamp ash bodies from 3lb 8oz up to just under 5lb.  So yeah, 4 pounds for a nice light weight.

Because I've been weighing my own Tele to sell the body, I know the neck, hardware and pickups combined weigh about 3lb 3oz.  With vintage hardware like your Badger's that's probably 3lb or less, so you could really go up to 5lb for the body and still be very comfortable.

I am afraid if I start this I'm gonna be in serious trouble financially, my fatal amp obsession plus addicted to warmoth games would be at least one too many sins ... still like the Baja muchos grandos, maybe I can cope a little more with the weight.

Some of those showcase bodies look damn sweet though ...
