I'm so homesick.
Uni is great; but every time i listen to my music or play my guitar it reminds me of home and it makes me unhappy that my childhood seems to be over.
It sounds really lame and i guess it is a bit - but i really love where i'm from and moving to the filthiest city I've ever seen has been a major blow for me. (Go Birmingham!) I used to love that songs carried such good memories with them; but now i hate it because they seem so firmly lodged in the past!
I'm trying to listen to new music and play guitar I've never played before to keep me cheery but i love the oldies and keep coming back. I know eventually I'll grow to love this place and I'll have plenty of good songs and memories associated with it, but right now i can hardly wait for the weekend to come so i can go back to Wendover, escape this urban degradation and ride my bike around the lovely green woods, and then come home and crank up my jcm800.
Any other freshers feeling the same?
LOVING the Mules!

Will

Having been through similar things for the last 3.5 years I can totally sympathise with you.

You already know this but try and keep busy and create new experiences for yourself.

It may be worthwhile avoiding 'old associations' that remind you of more comfortable times. Save those for when you are back in those surroundings so they don't get tainted with negative feelings (I have lost the ability to enjoy certain songs etc for exactly this reason)

Alcohol will probably make you feel worse, so avoid it until you start enjoying your surroundings a bit more.

Take care in the meantime

Rob...

Then again, I leave London permantly on Friday morning so I can vouch for the fact that such phases in your live are only temporary (but thats dosn't help much when you are in the middle of it)
Goodbye London !

Rob is right, however tiresome it might be, it is a phase that will come to an end and one day you may find yourself looking back at your Uni days with something approaching affection. There will be many around you feeling the same though it is also the case that not everyone will talk about it. You will make friends in time (some will be friends for many years to come) but you still have us lot.

They're both right, but it'll pass, just drink more beer.  I think everyone gets a bit homesick when they go to uni, it's natural but give it some time.  It's a bloody 'orrid feeling though.

I know that the feeling was 100 times worse when I left uni and moved back to my hometown.  I was different but everthing else was exactly the same.  It's all relative so enjoy uni while you can, it goes bloody quick and before you know it, you've got a sodding job

After a little while, you'll have a good group of mates and who knows.........I met my wife at uni.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

i feel incredibly homesick whenever i move whatever the circumstances.

once you get a good bunch of pals at uni they'll be friends for life, lots of adventures and so on.

i say, give it another few months

Yep I've been feeling exactly the same the past few days. The main thing I'm missing is my bed! Last night there was an alarm going off until about 3 in the morning and I had a 9:00 tutorial :( I havent had many good nights sleep yet as I'm used to sleeping in a quiet village whereas here people are always moving about and making noise! Havent had a nice roast dinner for a few weeks either  I will say the nights out are better than at home though, in the past few weeks I've been drunk more times than I usually get in a year :P

Chin up Indy.

This is so very normal.

Go out as much as you can and meet as many people as you can. Soon enough you'll have a ball and forget about home.

Birmigham is a great uni and good social life.

I grew up there but went to Reading Uni. Still go to some student pubs when I go back to brum.

Yep, that sounds about right- but gotta say my Uni days were some of the best of my life. Just work hard and play even harder!

I was the opposite. I couldn't wait to leave my family home and start fresh. Albeit it took until the final year of my degree to move out, but those first three years sucked at home.

Never really moved far, but I suppose I'm the odd one out and had many annoying family problems to deal with, divorce ain't pretty.

Stick with it Indy - savour the time at home, and enjoy Uni, as you say, you will soon have great experiences there to remember! (or not if your 'tom on the town' ! ;) )

Every Uni will have a Rock Soc..and do't forget other support that is available to you if you need it (here ends the lesson we (as a lecturer) give to all new students :) )

How many signs, I wonder, from Wendover, had the W changed to a B?

I wish I could get away from Leeds, too many students  8)

Here's something to cheer all you freshers up - I went to Sunderland Uni.  How much better do you feel now? Sunderland is a total hole, I've been there once since I graduated and I only live 20 minutes down the road.

I've got real sympathy for Indy, I've got a friend who lives outside Birmingham and every time I go down there I feel glad to live in Newcastle.
