i'm taking a bit of a risk by posting here in case someone else buys... but i guess i'm not married to buying the guitar so it doesn't matter too much.

the concept series is MIJ, and seems well thought of... should be quite alot better than a modern RR30, which I thought was pretty awful. if its as nice as a modern RR3, I'll be happy.

dont know about the twisted neck stuff mentioned in the ad though. that puts me off. the price is quite alot under my budget though, but i dont want to waste 175 quid on a turkey.

any thoughts? i do want a Rhoads offset V at some point in the near future.

It looks OK, but his description of the twisted neck - and how apparently easy it was to fix - sounds a bit odd.  Then again, for £175 it might be worth a flutter - but I don't know how much that model would normally sell for.  Any idea how much they'd be worth in top condition?

twisted necks can be fixed anyway - the only thing that would put me off is the fact it sounds like he is doing the fret levelling himself, so i would want to know what experience he had with that job

thanks for the advice so far

i dont know how much they normally go for, the concept model is slightly rare and doesn't come up very often. there was one a few weeks ago, but it was refinished.

wez has a point about the guys experience - he says 'there are some scratches on the fingerboard', maybe from the fret work hes done? ok, necks can be fixed, but for a price... might be worth buying a different guitar.

as philly says, its a kind of gamble.

hmm, i'll wait for some more opinions

his feedback is good and the price is reasonable.  I would ask him some questions about fretwork and measurements of string heights.  The answers are not really whats important but if he is happy to answer them is.


Tbh if he was a dishonest person he probably never would have mentioned the frets or neck at all.

I suffer from this problem when i list stuff on ebay - i always try and be honest but that hurts the price stuff goes for!!

Be a bit cautious with a neck that is described as twisted....it could be worse than you might care for - in the end it may call for a refret and having the fingerboard levelled- which could set you back a fair bit of money

The other problem with these bolt neck Rhoads models is that the top frets are shifted into the body and are a bit inaccessable and the bridge is positioned further back as a result and not in what I would feel is the ideal position.

As he is asking £175 with a dodgy neck and a makeshift case - I would look out for a RR5 with a case at a sensible price, or even a Fernandes version (they were pretty good)

thanks again all, but felines post has sealed it for me...

i asked the seller some questions about the fret work, but i dont think i'll buy it now in any case.  i haven't brought any completely rubbish guitar in my (albeit short) playing career, and i dont want to start now.

the fernandes version sounds very interesting, and its a good option to know about.

the problem with RR5s, is that although they are undoubtedly nice, the finishes they use are a bit too fancy for me (pin stripe or flame top are very popular)

i'd like one of these:

no idea who kevin bond is, but i like the features hes specified... ok, maybe not the pentagram inlays, but i can tolerate those.

Well done, I've been trying to find pics of the Fernandes models, without success!

a decent response from the guy.... i'm tempted again now! i wish i was strong against the desire to buy this, set neck would obviously be much nicer. i suppose i've been wanting a V with this shape for a while.

getting the truss rod right. I don't have the measuring tools to give you an
accurate string height but I would describe the action as medium, with the bottom E

The neck does look a bit cr@p for upper fret access, enough to annoy i guess, but not as bad as the 25th anniversary / prototype models.

The guy does seem honest with his answer though...

ill tell you now i had one of these a bit back and the upper fret access is worse than on your standard explorer type guitar

and with the wood (poplar) i couldnt find a pickup that suited it well and i tried loads from duncan JBs to EMGs and i even stuck my miracle man in and it just always sounded really lifeless.

id be wary

see, as someone who is often too honest on ebay auctions i am trying to figure out if this guys the same.  He certainly seems like he is - which means its possible a pretty good guitar and hes being perfectly honest - which has to be better than somebody who doesnt mention any problems at all.  I dont know what the value of these guitars is so i cant say if its a good deal or not but if its less than similar ones sell for then it is.

If it was a high priced guitar i would certainly be more cautious.

the best thing would be to let the guy know that the twist bothers you but you are considering buying.  If he really is honest he will understand that and hopefully you can come to an agreement to return it if you are not happy with its playability, be even better if you can get to derby to try it out.  If he is not happy with that then your decision is made aint it!!
