Just got back from seeing Rush
« on: October 11, 2007, 02:14:55 AM »
WOW  My life is complete.  Didn't think I'd ever get the chance to see Rush after I was forced to miss the R30 tour.  But I made it to Wembley Arena to see them this time round.

It was amusing to see that I was significantly below the average age of the audience - at 35 & still listening to mostly metal it's been a long time since I could say that about a gig I attended :)  There were quite literally people in their 50s in suits there (no, I'm not talking about the band)

When I got there I found that I'd been moved from somewhere near the back to 11 rows from the front (RESULT!) - but on Geddy's side so I had to crane my neck a bit to see Alex :(

As for the band, they were fantastic. Only a truly great rock band can take a relatively weak setlist that leaves out most of their best material & still make it into an awesome show.  I wasn't at all disappointed.

Alex must have either fallen out with PRS or been wooed by Gibson as he played exclusively Gibsons.  Mainly Les Pauls (a couple of seriously droolsome Floyd-equipped LPs, some piezo-bridge LPs, a Goldtop, his old white ES335 & a gorgeous 12-string J200).

Anyway, absolutely exhausted & starving but very very happy :)
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

Nah, there's a video around where he says he just wanted something a little different/traditional because everyone and their mothers are playing PRS nowadays. Which is true.
Yeah, well, The Dude abides.

Umm kinda:

They opened with Limelight, Digital Man
played Freewill 5th or 6th
then Between the Wheels, Secret Touch & a few others (Circumstances was in there somewhere)
Dreamline was the last before the interval

5 songs in a row from Snake & Arrows to open the second part
Subdivisions & Natural Science before the drum solo.
Alex played Hope as an acoustic solo straight after the drum solo
Distant Early Warning, Spirit of Radio, Tom Sawyer (as a faux encore with a hilarious South Park cartoon intro)
Then One Little Victory, Bangkok & YYZ to close.

IIRC it was pretty much the exact setlist I'd read on some reviews beforehand.

EDIT to add a few songs I just remembered
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

:D They were good & the show was the best i`ve seen them do ie, lights Visual Fx etc. Like you i cant think of what there 3rd number was !

They didn`t play many of there "Hits" as it were but alot of the songs you`d forgotten by them. Loads of tracks off of Snakes & Arrows.

The eye opening thing was that Wembly wasn`t sold out. When i went on Tuesday they had "Curtained Off" the back end of the arena. I`ve never seen this happen for a Rush gig ever in the last 25yrs. This means that there are tickets available still for there shows so dont hesitate try & get a ticket it is worth it.

I sort of wish I'd gone, but I hate Wembley Arena so much as a venue.  I wish they'd knocked it down and rebuilt it at the same time they did the Stadium.

No doubt there'll be a DVD in due course.  Rush never skimp on the live albums!
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Rush is my alltime favourite band.

Snakes And Arrows is such a return to form for Rush. Armour & Sword could be lifted right off of Permanent Waves, and you gotta love any album that opens with the insane time signature of Farcry.

:D Yep thats it ! Entre Nou.

If & when they gig NY Ben get tickets its worth it. Cant wait to get the DVD when it comes out. Philly Q you should have got tickets mate !

The other thing i like about Rush is they have a sense of humour. They take there music seriously but not themselves as proved by the intro to the show. The south Park intro to Tom Sawyer was worth the price of the ticket alone

Totally!  If you watch all the extras on the Rio DVD, Alex Lifeson is hilarious.  They're top blokes.

Yeah JT, I probably should've gone (haven't seen them since '87!) but I wish they'd play Hammersmith instead.
