I've only heard the Pafs which have always had a cool sound and the Air Nortons which I've always thought seemed rather weak.

If it's the stock pickup, it's an Air Norton, that's slightly costumized to Petrucci's specs. He has used that pickup since the Images and Words days.

I think it's cler now why I've signed up to this forum, I'm obviously without a clue. The Petrucci sounds sweet but the Pacifica 821D loaded with Air Nortons always sounded thin..I'll call the police and turn myself in I guess.

Thanks again for all the good words guys. I'm glad the MM's are working for me.

There's a big difference in the guitars. The EBMM is very well built and I assume that's wy it sounds better than the Pacifica, even if it's the same pickup.
The bridge pup in the JP is a Steve's Special (older models) or D-Sonic (newer models) btw.

Very kind sir.  I have to say I didn't know what to expect from the MM set as they were added purely on recommendation. Before that I'd only really played with Seymours and EMGs.

The thing that worried me was the possibility that these were going to be EMG sterile. I was pleasantly surprised to find a they had a great clarity and rich harmonic range. Bridge is crisp and direct without being brittle or sharp. Cleans up rather nicely as well. The neck is warm, driven and pure so all in all a great match. Jonathan rigged them to give an almost acoustic tone ala Petrucci in the middle position.

Haven't used anything else since I brought the feline home :D
