I thought (in my alcohol addled state) the phrase Heavy Metal was first coined by a journalist trying to write about Sabbath? hmmm

Ex-Blue Oyster Cult manager Sandy Pearlman has always claimed to have invented the term Heavy Metal (in a musical context).

Some of the credit has to go to Steppenwolf for including the "Heavy Metal Thunder" line in Born To Be Wild.  I think that must have inspired whoever actually came up with the term, even if they didn't realise it.

Yeah, one of them things. Just thought was Sabbath, but would NOT bet on it (this time ;)).
Bit silly researching this one too as am sure many will lay claim to it.

Anywhoo, I still say, This Country SUCKS for Rock/Metal nowadays!  :P

come to think about it when did R&B lose both the Rhythm and the Blues and become the cr@p we suffer now ?

   very true!!

There are plenty of good UK bands (sikth, oceansize, immune etc...), they just aren't playing arenas at the moment - which sucks as they have more talent than the likes of son of dork, mcfly (who I'm seeing in Leeds tomorrow night!) etc...
MM set, warpig set, about to be fitted - custom 7 bridge 'pig, CS7 neck.

It seems I have started something lol.

I only posted this yesterday. Anyway....

Yes.

Bring back the days of Zep and Sabbath when real music was still being played!!

Music in this country needs to be re invented and the indy bands need to be wiped out.

Many of you seems to shite on bands using screamed vocals   there's many bands such as Opeth, Meshuggah, Dilinger Escape Plan, etc... wich are actualy genre defining and they use those kind of screams. Don't ditch a whole lot of bands without scratching the cr@p surface a bit...
There's good thing in everything but don't expect to hear those on radio/tv...

^Children of Bodom, Killswitch Engage, In Flames...

i HATEEE screamo and screaming usually but im with Hell Hound on this one. personally i think bands such as the ones i mentioned are awesome and the screaming is fine in them. its when you get bands using the screaming here there and everywhere and to very little effect, and basically just for the sake of it- thats when it sucks.

! Shudder !

The Libertines, Dirty Pretty Things (lets include Lil Bag Head boy and his  girlfriend too)

Normally I wouldn't ever dream of comparing (or critisising) bands or music, (apart from Urban & DJ stuff). If somebody likes them thats fine but Iv'e already heard it done before, only better (but then I'm old & bitter)

So may of these 'critically acclaimed' bands (or media darlings should I say) are only shine because of the lacklustre competition. Take the example of Oasis, they had a few good songs (scattered across the first 2 or 3 albums). In previous times they would have been 2nd division players but never premiership & definately not world class

'The Edge' in U2 was hailed as being revolutionary when they 1st turned up, yet Robert Quine (search for him) was doing the same thing several years before, so was Robert Fripp. Ollie Halsall was two hand tapping in the late 60s (look him up too he truely was amazing, one of the original shredders)

Yes do appreciate what modern bands are doing but also go and search for some Syd Barrett, Nick Drake, MC5, Stooges, Patti Smith, Television, Woodie Guthrie, Billy Bragg and a 1000 other bands & artists.

Please dont' take this as a critisism of your taste in music it's just that personally I can't get excited about what I have heard several times before. As I said before thats because I'm old and bitter

BTW The last band that sounded 'new' to me was the Future Sound of London and that was a long time ago :( even worse there where no guitars :(

Rob...

Feck it bring back Space Rock (hurry up with your CD Carlaz !)
Goodbye London !

I wanna know, why when so many folks (illustrated by this board) are so into Rock/Metal that this country is running a VERY poor second to USA for Rock/Metal bands? (I am NOT familiar with 'Johnny Kills Dolphins' or whatever local band is in your town, I mean BIG bands, like we used to have and lets face it INVENTED! Where's the Black Sabbath's, Maiden's, Waysted's,Priest's??????????????????).

I always think the same thing when I have the radio on (no cd player in car yet  :x ), none of the "new" music (The Kooks, Guillemots, Klaxons, Bloc Party etc I think are a few to mention) has anything special about it, it all sounds the same, theres no balls in the music.

I really need to find some good musicians who like proper music to create some good old british hard rock and metal   Although I doubt itd get big as theres probably no "market" in todays music business as it wouldnt be trendy enough to sell..

I wouldn't for a minute say any of those bands are cr@p - they're not - but I honestly have trouble with the vocals.  I've got a lot of Opeth stuff and a few other things like The Haunted and Arch Enemy, and I like the music a lot - but I'd like it more without the "gargling battery acid" vocals.

Not saying people shouldn't sing like that, but it's hard for an old duffer like me to understand why they do.  I really don't like listening to it.  And if I buy a CD which I find 40-50% unlistenable, I end up not playing it very much...

If those guys did instrumental albums I'd probably buy 'em.

At least she did Horses (that just sounds disgusting)

Tom,

I agree with you where is the swagger, the attitude. I remember when the 1st Kasabian album came out, when the bass line came thudding in you knew knew something was going to happen (wether you liked the album or not is a totally different matter).

The Magic Numbers (music to wallpaper to) are a prime example of what I dislike they are so bland, they even make Supertramp sound dynamic.

If I want something tasteful & softer but with passion Al Stewarts, Roads to Moscow still sends chills through me 25 years after first hearing it (more so than any Floyd track has ever done)

Rob...

Strangely enough, their new album is called Breakfast, Elevenses, Lunch, Tea, Four Course Dinner, Coffee and Liqueurs in America.

Not that I'm calling them f*t.  Wouldn't want to get into trouble like that Richard Bacon.
