Most of the people on this forum seem to live and breathe guitars and music. I wander does anyone on here have any other hobbies? Do any of you frequent forums for other activities? Or do you all just fretwank all day? :P
Aswell as my guitar playing efforts
I ride a mountain bike (XC),
I'm very big on headphone audio (Head-Fi),
and I have a lovely girlfriend full time (Kerrie).
-
Onanism.
-
Other hobbies?
erm... I own a bass...
-
I also MTB though its become mostly road riding more recently because theres nowhere good to ride here. Other than that I dont do a lot. I like films and game a fair bit but I seem to be fairly cr@p at most games I still enjoy it.
-
Another mountain biker clocking in here! Got really good terrain for it round here (North Downs), but my bike needs a fair bit of upgrading- front and rear cassettes, front/rear shocks- so i'm toying with the idea of getting a new bike.
I enjoy building 'stuff', ranging from instrument(s) to a work bench, to veg plot cover, and i love building electronics too, currently working on a couple of really nice compressors(for mixing, not in the guitar chain), and a valve tremolo/overdrive.
Beer and BBQs complete the list i think- with being at uni most days during the week, and working sunday and monday, my time is monopolised somewhat!
-
I'm currently rediscovering the joy of skateboarding after giving it up in my early teens (when I first became obsessed with playing the guitar). I routinely head out an hour early for work, so I have a chance to accrue some bruises and scr@pes before I limp into the lab. Other than that I've always been an ultrakeen reader, and tend to burn through a couple of new books (or re-read a few old ones) every week.
Does the Internet count as a hobby if you spend more than an hour a day there? :)
-
It's motorbikes and bike racing for me. I religiously watch the World Superbikes, British Superbikes and all the GP classes (125GP, 250GP and MotoGP). I'm currently leading our work fantasy team competition for bike racing :D
And as posted in another thread, I ride this when the weather's nice

http://www.preromanbritain.com/maxymiser
http://www.preromanbritain.com/stj
i'm also a drum'n'bass and electro DJ. got a pair of decks, some drum machines, synths and so forth.
since you list your girlfriend as a hobby, perhaps i should too ;)
-
Recently, finding BKPs etc, I have become somewhat re-absorbed in all things guitar...
But in the last 10 years or so I have had two other passions:
(Passive participant) Watching cricket
(Active participant) Artist
Funnily enough, you can combine those two quite easily, but they frown at you when you turn up at the Oval with guitar cases and amplifiers to watch Surrey lose another game... (so I've been staying home and playing my guitar instead for most of this season so far!)
-
A work, wife and 2 kids preclude any sort of proper hobbies ATM.
Before heading off to London for 3.5 years I was into some electronics (mostly guitar FX & microcontrollers), drawing and a bit of watercolour painting
Some computer graphics (writing object generators for POV & 3D studio)
In the past though I was involved in the Amiga underground scene (game deprotection and also demo & intro coding), and some commercial stuff (getting peoples games running at a decent speed). Later I was involved in the PC reverse engineering scene (decryption and documentation of file protection systems).
I think I'm going to have to reaquire a hobby of some sort
-
I'm a big movie buff, all sorts but especially horror movies (I spend a lot of time at the London Film Festival every year, and all August bank holiday weekend at FrightFest )
I have many thousands of DVDs and CDs.
Still guitar-related, but I collect guitar magazines obsessively and have them going back over 25 years.
I don't really think of it as a hobby, but I read lots of books - it always amazes me that some people never read a book... :?
And I do no physical exercise whatsoever. In the distant past I was very fit and a gym regular, but I was always absolutely rubbish at all sport. This situation may be about to change, as I've foolishly agreed to do a 10K run in October, and I don't want to humiliate myself (or die of a heart attack).

I know the feeling, I signed up to a gym about 10 weeks ago to help get my weight down (and get my lungs to behave a bit better), and have spent the last 2 weeks sulking cos I have a chest infection.
It's something I have to do though, so I refuse to class it as a hobby (I belive you should enjoy a hobby)
-
I can drink the living shit out of a beer, does that count?
I read. A lot. And fish. Like, for fish. To eat.
Used to moutain bike and play basketball, but those days are long gone.
-
my main hobby outside of guitars is my girlfriend, but she'd probably cut of my balls for saying that, ha ha.
after that I'd say cooking, I can't get enough of UK TV Food.
-
Nah... I'm boring...!
Had to give up being a p*sshead for medical reasons. This somewhat takes the shine out of most social situations! Currently trying to get fit, and also spend time outdoors in places that aren't the middle of London.
Also an obsessive reader, which is handy for general 'people avoidance'.
-

I'm so glad I'm not the only anti-social cretin on the board.
I avoid people at all costs.

I definitely want to start cooking more - I LOVE FOOD. I cook quite a lot for my girlfriend's family, but I only really have a few signature dishes; I'd love expand my ability to make something different every night.
Made some badass brownies the other day too
-
I had several non-music hobbies:
Online Gaming: Asheron's Call & WoW
Watching sports: Rugby League, Cricket, Golf
Playing sports: Golf
Fitness: Boxing/home gym, Walking, Powerball (no, not that kind of powerball :))
Food/Drink: I collect Single Malt Whisky & I like to host dinner parties (OK, I'm not a great cook but I haven't killed anyone yet ;))
But with 2 small children almost all of these have fallen by the wayside. The children need almost constant attention & there just isn't time for much else. The only hobby I've been able to spend any time on (& even then only a fraction of what I'd like) is my guitar playing.
The funny thing is that it doesn't really bother me. Being a parent is so tremendously rewarding that I don't really miss the other things too much. As long as I can spend some time with my guitars (which are the most important hobby to me) then I'm happy...
-
Next to music I'm into (American) cars. I own a '76 Mustang, lots of scale models and I make and customize the occasional model kit.

-
I build alot of PCs for myself/mates, that's allways fun.
I'm involved in alot of manga work, and am a staff member for mangashare/binktopia, (those who read manga etc, may know what that is).
I watch far too many movies/drama series/anime, etc. Shouldn't really be healthy.
I play quite a bit of PC Games, mostly Dota or CivIV with my mates.
I've started to ride my bike quite alot.
I love maths, often found doing exercises while in park with my mates :p
-
Antag, WATCHING sports is not a hobby!!!
That would be something you do, are involved in some way in. Not something you watch others do!
-
Like Noodle, I'm a PC builder in my other spare time. I also do online gaming (Team fortress 2 at the moment, but really any first person shooter). I was very heavily into the clan scene a few years back, but now much prefer playing around with mates in a much less formal manner.
Occasionally play squash, not ridden my bike since my wrist-destroyer of an accident back in January.
I suppose work is sometimes my hobby, too. When you get to play around with 3D models of proteins, it can be quite fun!
Probably the biggest time-consumer, which I suppose much be a hobby by default, is DIY. My wife does most of the gardening, and I do most of the "home-improvement". Currently doing the finishing touches to the bathroom, then it's onto the lounge and dining room...
And of course spending time with my lovely wife :)

That is cool. In my very uncool opinion, so then again maybe it's not.
-
I'd like to be a PC builder but I got my mate to put my custom build thing together - I dont trust my lack of expertise with fragile and expensive components :( I'm usually clumsy as well so I'd probably mess it up. I am thinking of getting a better heatsink/fan for the cpu though (according to speedfan all my cores are above 40 when the computers basically idle, 37 system temp) which I could try to fit myself - is it hard?

Very, VERY cool! :o

I disagree. Note that I didn't say "lounging in front of the telly with the sports channel on" (though I don't even get the time for that nowadays  )
Going to a Rugby League game in the north of England, or a day at a test match, or a European Tour event involves time, effort, travel & expense. Once upon a time, these sports were very important to me (particularly RL, as an ex-pat Northerner I really missed being able to easily see games). IMO that's a hobby.
-
Well, I may let you off with that. But its a hobby like going to gigs is a hobby compared to playing guitar.
-
Let's not start a debate about the definition of hobbies.
I was just reading that friendly exchange of views on the definition of different genres of METHUUUUUUUUULZZ...
-
Genres of anything ;)
But, for some reason, there seems to be more inclination at large to carve metal up into different things.
And, Ok, fine :p
Drinking beer is one of my hobbies.
And another is the interwebz
and this forum
and walking
and breathing. I particularly enjoy the effects of getting oxygen out of the air, but I think I might be addicted!!!!!
-
I used to do a lot of things that I don't do any more; riding motorbikes, I used to do it for a living and compete off road at weekends so I kind of did a hell of a lot of biking in 10 years. I feel that after thinking about some of the mental things that I used to do that I should stay off them and thank my lucky stars I'm still here, in one piece.
I used to fish as a kid.
I used to skate.
I used to cycle.
I used to swim.
I used to Ski.
$%&# I used to do so many things but work and women take up most of my time now and whats left i play my guitars and i love it.
-
i like computer games, and reading... i'm pretty interested in science, history, politics, all stuff like that. used to play a bit of golf (wasn't any good), but i haven't for a while.
i don't really have any in-depth hobbies (or at least, as in-depth as guitar), but i'm slightly interested in everything, if that makes sense.
-
Antag, WATCHING sports is not a hobby!!!
That would be something you do, are involved in some way in. Not something you watch others do!
does that mean films can't count as a hobby? what's the difference? :D

I dont think there is any ;)
Nothing passive, to my mind is a hobby. Sit and look = passive.
A hobby is doing something. DIY, art, crafts, music, sports, athletics, mechanics, getting out and wandering round some woods, killing and eating things, growing and eating things, that manner of stuff.
Hobbies arent, IMHO, stuff you simply like. Cooking can be a hobby, eating cant, amature film making is a hobby, watching them aint, football is a hobby, going to see the sunday game is not (yes, I changed my mind - going to see people play a sport isnt a hobby, and niether is going to gigs :P). The list goes on.
Do I have some sort of harsh and draconian defintion of hobby? Does anyone get what I'm saying here?
-
Music takes up a lot of my time but other obsessions I have are reading and studying historical subjects. I don't get too much time however as I help Mrs 38th with her business and I tend to get a bit knackered. I do like travelling too but again, due to gigs and the business I am a bit restricted.
-

I don't want to have an argument Mark, but having read that thread where you debated, at great length, with Oppo 9 what a load of bollocks it was to define strict categories/genres of music, then yes I do think you have a harsh draconian definition of hobby.
To my mind if something interests you and you devote a lot of time to it, actively or passively, then it's a hobby. If I can't have the word "hobby", I'll call it a "pastime". :P
-
Avidly watching Doctor Who is a hobby of mine - Avidly following sports, also a hobby.
Watching is just as valid an action as playing.
-
Hmm, don't do much that much. weird one, haven't had anything to do with the farm for 10 months, but tractor driving is just great, had two days of it, enjoy it, and always have done. hobby?
I think watching films can be quite active to some extent, as mates of mine are usually predicting plot, trying to see how things play out, then criticising how it didn't do any of that (kind of annoying :P )
but I am definately a passive film watcher...
Shooting was an old hobby, prefer rifles over shotguns; still a great shot somehow :?
-
I too fall in the watching Dr Who camp - I have been doing the from start to finish marathon and am at Pyramids of Mars at the moment, its gone on for 7 months now (aside from the fact i've seen them all before). Troughton rules in my books.
Oh and I write history books. Academic ones, so I don't get paid for them, so that is classed as a hobby in my opinion.
-
I associate "hobby" with something that you pass some time with and enjoy to do, but isn't that important in your life. Some might define that as a "pass-time", I dunno. I spend most of my free time with my girlfriend, religious activities, listening to and playing music, all of which are very important to me so I wouldn't call them just hobbies. I paint occasionally and go hiking, those are hobbies.
-
My hobby is wearing women's underwear.
-
TwinFan, that's an AWESOME Duke! I bet you can hear it a mile away...
I'm a black belt in kung fu; between that, the guitar and the wife and 2 darling boys (not necessarily in that order...) I have my time pretty much allocated.
Mark.
-

Cheers Mark! And yes, you can
Gotta love Termis and an open clutch :D
-

I have had a bit of a nostalgia trip and played Final Fantasy 7 all again, so com gaming

-
I organised and played in a weekly 5 a side game until health prevented. Starting up again in September I hope.

I was a farmer and my dad still is. I'm going back when it's time to harvest the wheat. It's fun.
Owned a shotgun. I was rubbish

I don't think that really makes any sense, Mark, to be honest.
Getting out and wandering round some woods is a hobby but going to a football match isn't?
I think a hobby is something a person does solely for the purpose of enjoyment. Whether that be skydiving, playing chess, or cooking, it doesn't really matter.
-
Still guitar-related, but I collect guitar magazines obsessively and have them going back over 25 years.
Do you - or anyone else want some more guitar mags
I have a collection going back 25 years and need to get shot of them as they are clogging up my mum's garage
All in boxes but it takes up a lot of room
-
It's interesting watching the "wot is a hobby or not?" debate.
I was getting ready to chip in with "when going to the odd game of cricket turned into going to all 5 days of all three London test matches, and all London ODI's and every Surrey home game I could get time off for, and some away games, and the associated hole that made in my bank account... then I think my nearest and dearest started classing it as one of my "hobbies"..."
But then I had scary thought:
How many of us here class our guitar "interest" as a "hobby"?
And for those of us who say, indignantly, "No, it's a calling..." or "No, it's what I do..."
How many of our nearest and dearest see it in the same light??!

I don't really have any space for more stuff, to be honest, Jonathan, but.... what have you got?
I might already have a lot of them, but (to be cheeky) would you split the collection? I have some gaps in my Guitar World collection that you might be able to cover. I'd pay for them of course! :)

i guess i disagree with your definition of a hobby then. that kind of logic can lead to the daft kind of thinking which is pretty prevalent nowadays that e.g. building a wall or washing your garden path is more constructive/useful than reading or academic work.
also, on a side note, by the looks of things round my house plenty of people consider eating a hobby...

I love this forum; you ask people what their hobbies are, and they just argue about the definition of the word "hobby"

Yeah I liked that one too  I was so tempted to answer it with a "Don't be a w***er, use words we all understand" but decided against it, would have kinda spoiled the joke at the time...
And there must be very few "swearing" filters that are high-brow enough to catch words like that... (we've been calling each other onanists at our place of work for many years!)

If it's a one off event, night out with the lads, "hey, why don't we go and watch some people sulking?" sort of thing, then no... but if you end up liking it and it turns into a regular thing, you invest some time and money it, maybe even start collecting souvenirs, and then workmates start accusing you of being obsessive about it... then I think you've earned the right to say you've found a new hobby... :D
-
I always felt a bit sorry for Onan - imagine being remembered as nothing more than a posh name for wanking, when it wasn't even what you actually did in the first place.
But better than not being remembered at all, perhaps. No such thing as bad publicity.

Then smoking is a hobby for me!
Yippiee!!

I wouldn't say that too loud though - just like everywhere else nowadays, there are some well meaning folk who will try to help you :D

Giving up smoking is a hobby for me. It's easy, I've done it loads of times.
Used to play golf too. Hated it. So i used to take 8 cans of 1664 in the golf bag. Loved it.

It's more of an affliction than a hobby come to think of it...
-
Tipsy Golf is good, but it's no Catchgolf.
As played in my teens on Dungannon golf course. A few lagered up lads hide in the hedge near a good long fairway. await a good drive. Run out, pluck the ball from the air (a background of playing hurling helps!!), and scream "catchgolf!!!", whil;st legging it in the opposite direction PDQ.
I like to think we're the reason Darren Clarke got so good.

Don't need to pay just go to youtube and search for emo
As I have 2 teen age kids I would suggest that paying for them not to sulk was already a national and very active pastime for many people
-
extreme ironing, now that's a real hobby!!!
-
Hobbies?
Oh wow, thats humiliating...
My hobbies are basically 99% music, reading about music theory, becoming proficient on as many instruments as I can, composing, arranging, and I make a hobby out of trying to challenge and improve my tastes by listening as widely as I can... it sounds a little sad, and I don't do a whole lot else, but I'm loving it.
I was planning on becoming a concert pianist but 9 months ago I got RSI and busted up my index fingers real bad (hasn't gone away yet, and doctors say I wont be able to play again) so I widened my hobbies a little... Now i read up on politics and history as well as classic literature, and ride my bike, have a girlfriend, etc.
-
extreme ironing, now that's a real hobby!!!
haha, i remember watching a program about that a while back. awesome.
-
A good day at the shooting range is just peachy for me!
-
Errr I also like golf and other sports, but by other passion besides guitars and music are bikes. Push bikes to be precise, preferably fixed or road bikes...yum...
I also like building FX pedals in winter when nights are short and I am at a loss as to what to do...
-
Pretty fun stuff to read.....this forum!!!Haha!!!
-
Well I've been working two jobs for around a month and a half now, all i really do in my free time is sleep and relax playing on the xbox. I need some new hobbies- just guitaring is getting a bit repetative- i enjoy it more when i don't play all the time. If that makes sense.
So yeah gotten back into console gaming, built a few fx pedals and enjoy that greatly. My problem is i want to build stuff but i don't need it... I see a fun little project but back out cos i wont use the end result. Might take up skateboarding again, but i fear i'm too old and boring to be doing that again.
-
I used to bike alot until my bike broke now I just go to the gym and cain some weights. Other hobbies include drinking fine ales and skating.
-
my only other hobbies are:
running
films
PC games (especially online multiplayer ones!)
job hunting
reading books such as 'mixing with your mind' and then never ever revealing any of the secrets ect
plus I cannot get a girlfriend, and I'm a $%ing looser, I don't even have any good friends these days.
-
Outside of playing guitar/listening to (and acquiring) new music, I enjoy the following:
Reading. I have a voracious appetite for reading. Unfortunately, I'm also an impossibly slow reader, and it takes me weeks to finish a novel. I usually alternate fiction/non fiction to keep it interesting. In the fiction department, I'm a big Stephen King fan (recently converted). In the non-fiction department I'll read anything that looks interesting at the moment.
JRPGs, especially those released by Square, Squaresoft, and Square Enix. I am currently playing Chrono Trigger and FF XI, Midgarsormr server.
Southern Shaolin kung-fu. I study a family system called Fu Jow Pai, closely related to the Hung Gar system.
Old school kung-fu movies, particularily those released by Shaw Brothers during their golden age, 1965-1975.
NYC dive bars. There's nothing like the vibe you get from a classic dive bar. I've been to most of the well-known dive bars in NYC, and am aiming to hit them all eventually!
Tabletop strategy games. My favourites are Axis & Allies and Warhammer 40,000.

My hobby is wearing women's underwear.

I teach MMA during the day 3-5 days a week. On the other days, I run and lift weights. Once the sun goes down, it's strictly music. I play over 300 gigs a yer and usually get home between 2-4am, then I write and record til sunrise, sleep til noon, then the cycle starts again.
I also play bass, drums, keys, and a bunch of other weird instruments, but I love my guitars.

Just started going to the gym again, for the first time in 5 years or more. I've foolishly agreed to do a 10K run in October so I have to make some attempt to get "fit" (relatively speaking) to avoid doing the last 8K in an ambulance (or a hearse...).
Last time I did any strenuous exercise I was in my late 30s and not too far off my peak health-wise. Now I'm 44 and well over the top of that hill, rolling fast and gathering momentum (the extra weight helps...). It'll be interesting to see what happens in the next few months. :?

Should try Coventry. I once got in a fight before I'd even got to the bar.
Err...hobbies - Drinking beer in the garden, talking shitee on here, making stuff and planning the next big plan (looking for a new house at the minute) :D

I play video games.
I also attempt to write them, but I never usually finish them before I start the next one. :)

Interesting stuff. I studied Lau Gar when I was younger, which I believe is related to Hung Gar. It's Wing Chun for me now, getting too old for all that jumping about!!!
Mark.

Ah! Wing Chun is awesome. Especially with egg fried rice and a few sweet'n'sour chicken balls.

Oi! Don't mess!
If I don't get you with my martial art skills, I could slay you with my Ralph Macchio guitar ability...

my only other hobbies are:
running
films
PC games (especially online multiplayer ones!)
job hunting
reading books such as 'mixing with your mind' and then never ever revealing any of the secrets ect

Well one of my hobbies if you can call it that was internet dating! Yes folks I can heartly recommend it! I went on around 20 dates and shagged 11 of them which makes my hit rate higher than 50%

It's easy Phil, just turn up at a meeting place and let roll. Sign up on one of the sites, there are thousands of single women in London.

HA! I had a chuckle when I read that :).
Wing Chun is a great style, very practical.
Lau Gar is indeed a southern style (like Hung Gar) which has mostly found its home in the UK.

If I did I wish I'd have your strike rate.
Fortunately for me I've been happily with my girl for 9 years now!

When I'm not messing around with my Guitars, I can usually be found for hours at a time playing on the best Neverwinter Nights PW Action server EVER: The Three Towns.
I've been playing there 5 years and still going.
*coughgeekcough*
Apart from that I like to paint Warhammer 40,000 when I'm in the mood. I used to be pretty good at it as a kid, but these days my motivation is pretty low, although one day I hope to amass my skills in to one awesome model and win the Golden Demon awards. :D
Oh my god I'm such a geek. :x
-
Heh up till parenthood I used to do a lot of painting for the local Games Workshop store displays, but real life has gotten in the way
