Game on!
-
1. Paul Kossoff

-
Paul Gilbert
Jimmy Page

Kossoff
Joe Bonamassa
Knopfler

-
In no particular order (they are all great in their own individual ways)
1. Slash
2. Paul Gilbert
3. Steve Vai
4. Rory Gallagher
5. Joel Stroetzel (His pinch harmonics are awesome! :))
EDIT: Just looked, and while I was posting, Spitfire posted a few similar ones to me... I didn't copy him! :P He was just quicker. lol.
-
1: Tony Iommi
2: Michael Schenker
3: Paul Gilbert
4: Joe satriani
5: Tony McAlpine
-
My favorite guitarists come from bands I've loved not necessarily great guitarists.
Billy Duffy (pre and post the disaster of Electric)
Brian Setzer
Jerry Cantrell
Warner Hodges (Jason and the Scorchers)
Rick Richards (Georgia Satellites)
Who do I think is the best?
In the Genre of Rock it's a toss up between Gilbert and Satriani
The best over all:
Some old guy no one has heard of in Spain probably
-
Bert Jansch
Robert Johnson
Peter Green
Jimi Hendrix
early Eric Clapton
-
This should be in Time Out, but seeing as I'm making the effort to reply you can find my list in this thread:
http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=5360.0 (http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=5360.0)
..and this one...
http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=10036.0 (http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=10036.0)
-
Slash
EVH
SRV
Brian May
Angus
(Can't believe no-one's said Eddie yet!)
-
Rory Gallagher
Allen Collins
Steve Gaines
Duane Allman
Paul Kossoff
- that's five favourites at the mo, off the top of my head, no order
Next week it will be
SRV
Andy Powell
Brian May
Angus Young
Billy Gibbons
etc, etc... :D
-
This should be in Time Out
+1
Anyway, I don't know what I said in the other thread, but today I'll say
Robin Trower
Ritchie Blackmore
Leslie West
Andy Powell and Laurie Wisefield (...and Ted Turner)
Anyone who's ever been in Scorpions
OK, cheated a bit there with my "five"....
-
5? Ouch
Varies from day to day, let alone week to week, but at the moment they are
Paul ryan - origin. Player of the most brutal paganini you've ever heard.
Tommy emanuel - Beautifull melody and remarkable composer.
Aaron Turner -Isis - Remarkable composer in a completely different way
Nuno betencourt - Funky, rocky, shreddy, brilliant musician
James hetfield - layed the foundation of metal rhythm for me, and will probably always be on my top five. (And people say I look like him when I play - too many metallica vids when I was 16, I suppose!).
-
Jimmy Page
Jimmy Hendrix
Slash
The last two would be between John Butler (acoustic, mainly), John Sykes, EVH, Angus e.t.c.
-
My faves would have to be
Akira Yamaoka from the Silent hill series.
Andy Mckee
Bill Baily - Hell Yeah!
Omar and Cedric from 'Volta
Corey Unger From Blood Has Been Shed
I wouldnt say i like all those Guitar Masters because i dont enjoy the music they create. The people in my list have made music that i have always listened to or always will, and they kinda show what i like most about guitar!
-
Jake E Lee
Pepper Keenan
Dimebag
Iommi
Argh one last slot between Jimmy Page, Angus, Hendrix etc
-
EVH
David Gilmour
Glen Tipton
Billy Gibbons
Angus Young
-
The guy from Two Gallants
The guys from Indian Summer
The guys from Q and Not U
Omar and Cedric from At the Drive In
The guys from Braid
The guys from Fugazi
The guys from the Jesus Lizard
The guys from Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Two
Sorry I couldn't stop at 5. There's SO MUCH good guitar playing out there!
-
Guthrie Govan
Joe Satriani
Jason Becker
Bulb
Fredrik Thordendal
Can't believe I'm first to say Guthrie :o
-
Brian Setzer
Malcolm Young
Jim Heath (Rev. Horton Heat)
Jaymz Hetfield
Angus Young
Honarble mentions to:
Paul Pigat (aka Cousin Harley)
Tom Morello
Jim Compilongo
-
Hmmm this is hard, as everyone mentioned it changes from week to week But the main ones are:
Richie Sambora - had a profound effect on me as kid learning to play guitar
Audley Freed - for those that don't know he use to play in Cry Of Love & The Black Crowes. the guy is amazing if you ever get a chance to see him perform...do it, just don't spill beer on his jeans
Rory Gallagher - touch, taste (pun intended) & songs, the man is a legend
Matt Schofield - kind of a weird choice, but the dude has opened my eyes to how to play guitar is certain ways
Jimmy Page - how this one guy be so sloppy yet be so influential....anyone? It's because he's got talent to burn.
See you next week for pt 2

Now playing: Russian Circles - You Already Did (http://www.foxytunes.com/artist/russian+circles/track/you+already+did)
via FoxyTunes (http://www.foxytunes.com/signatunes/)
-
Only 5??
Peter Green
BB king, Freddie King and Alber king all rolled into one so it only counts as one choice
JJ cale
George Harrison
Roy Buchanan
Or course next weeks choices could be the usual suspects Koss, Hendrix, SRV, Gilmour and Page.
-
think I missed a few not least rich williams, livgren and steve morse (kansas) and robbie robertson....also missed The young brothers AC DC, EVH. etc
-
Brian May
Michael Schenker
Matthias Jabs
George Lynch
Mark Kendall (Great White)
But I sometime want to say:
Eddie Van Halen
Ace Frehley
Gary Moore
Bernie Marsden/Mickey Moody
Warren De Martini
And part of me feels I should add:
Jimmy Page
Richie Blackmore
Paul Kossoff
Keith Richards
Angus Young
-
In no particular order:
1. Joe Satriani (who I just got home from seeing)
2. Dave Gilmour
3. Paul Gilbert
4. Steve Vai
5. Tony McAlpine
(And there are a lot more I want to put in there!) :(
-
Steve Vai

Devin Townsend
Robbern Ford
David Gilmour
-
Good thread.
1. Gary Moore.
2. Reeves Gabrels.
3. Richard Thompson.
4. Tony Iommi.
5. Allan Holdsworth.
Damn... Knopfler too. And Peter Greene. Oh, and Jeff Beck...
How many were we allowed?
-
Ohh, this is easy!!
SRV
David Gilmour
Jimmy Page
Jimmy Hendrix
Slash
-
What a great thread - didn't realise what I'd started.
Some great great names in there eh? Just shows how versatile an instrument our 6 stringed wonder can be.
Maybe there's another list along the lines of "5 most over-rated guitarists ever" Now that WOULD be fun :D
-
I don't really think five is fair but I'll try.
1. Andres Segovia
2. Hendrix
3. Paul Gilbert
4. James Hetfield
5. Jimmy Page
-
1. Jimmy Page
2. EVH
3. John Frusciante
4. Frank Zappa
5. Lenny Breau
-
Shawn Lane
Thank you.
Jason Becker
Shawn Lane
Steve Vai
Marty Friedman
Jimi
(sorry Paul  )
-
Maybe there's another list along the lines of "5 most over-rated guitarists ever" Now that WOULD be fun :D
It would, but might spark some "heated debates"...
On another thread, AndyR suggested the Top 5 guitar duos. Could be interesting too.
-
What no Jeff Beck?! :plasma: and of course Hank Marvin...
-
What no Jeff Beck?! :plasma: and of course Hank Marvin...
Give us your top 5 then Kevin!
-
1) Jimi Hendrix
2) Jimmy Page
3) David Gilmour
4) Richard Thompson
5) Jonny Greenwood
They were the first five that came to mind!
-
Maybe there's another list along the lines of "5 most over-rated guitarists ever" Now that WOULD be fun :D

Bring it on, baby 8)

Ok start with Vai...99% cr@p and noise 1% genius
-
1. Jimmy Page
2. EVH
3. John Frusciante
4. Frank Zappa
5. Lenny Breau
Forgot about lenny breau. Amazing player.
Overrated guitarists?
Page
Hammet
Vai
Slash
frusciante
*Dons flame retardant siut*
-
I struggle with the "overrated" thing - how should we define overrated?
Is a player who's technically limited but writes great music overrated? Personally I'd rather listen to someone like that than someone with technique up the ying-yang whose music sounds like a series of wanky practice exercises. I couldn't give a sh!t about technical ability.
-

Page
Hammet

Slash
frusciante
*Dons flame retardant siut*
Hammett - yes
Vai - yes
Frusciante - sort of-ish
Slash - fair enough but I personally love him
Page - ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND!?
-
5 is way too few, but (in no order, and i'm liable to change my mind every day):
hendrix
srv
evh
eric johnson
malmsteen
-
Here's mine:
1. Jimi Hendrix
2. Slash
3. Jimmy Page
4. Angus Young
5. John Squire
-
Mine, at least for the last few days are:
Frusciante
Hendrix
Page
Graham Coxon
There is no 5th guitar player for the last few days (although I was listening to Wes Montgomery fairly recently). my list also changes more than the weather.
-
Top 5 in no particular order and reserving my right to change my mind tomorrow
1) Ritchie Blackmore
2) Joe Satriani
3) Jeff Healey
4) Gary Moore
5) Eric Clapton
6) Michael Schenker
7) Johnny A
8) Carlos Santana
OK, I can't count!!! :?
Most overrated guitarists in no particular order
1) Jimmy Page
2) Matthew Bellamy
3) Brian May
4) Herman Li
Best guitar duo:
Adrian Smith and Dave Murray - Iron Maiden was never the same when they weren't together
-
Page is overrated because he steals someone else's entire technique and composition (e.g. White Summer = She Moved Thro The Fair trad. arrangement by Davey Graham, e.g. Blackmountainside, = Blackwaterside trad. arrangement Bert Jansch, similar Janschisms on Going to California e.g. countless Delta blues licks from old Mississippian's who only have become available in the CD/download era) and credits it to himself.
Still, you gotta love Plaigey - he is a absolutely stunning guitarist when he does his own thing and always puts great new twists into the stuff he nicks.
i.e. - not really overrated at all.
-

I agree with that. That's why I have Vai on my list of favourite guitar players, I love his compositions and his sense of melody and I would too if he never played a 16th note in his life. It seems like some people can't grasp that it's possible to like someone who happens to have great technical ability for anything other than technical ability. I'm not saying that's what you said, but I thought I'd bring it up before the whole "technique vs. song writing" argument breaks loose. I think Steve Vai and Jimi Hendrix are some of the best song writers of all time, and I think Cat Stevens is. It doesn't have to contrast each other.
I'd definite "overrated" as a person liked by many but not by me, making the person overrated in my opinion. That makes overratedness entirely subjective, as it should be.
Top 5 guitarists whose playing, style, and songwriting is liked by many but not by me:
Eric Clapton
Dimebag Darrel (while we're at it, yeah he had great technique but I never heard him play anything that impressed or inspired me)
Johnny Ramone
Angus Young
John Mayor
Kurt Cobain would be the obvious choice, but I actually like a few Nirvana songs (). His playing and music is definitely overrated, but not as much as those guys ^ (IMO)
-
Steve Vai
Shawn Lane
Devin Townsend
Robbern Ford
David Gilmour
Holy shite - How did I forget Shawn?
-
Tony Iommi
Montalo (from Witchfynde)
Brian Tatler (from Diamond Head)
KK Downing
Pete Townshend
this list is possibly untrue, though these are the guys who have appeared in my mind right now.
-

That's fair enough - I can name people I don't like, but I wouldn't want to debate relative sloppiness of arpeggios or something.

Gary say's Joe Perry

Favourite or overrated?
-
Sorry as a great guitarist

SGmypod said it, I just agreed!
Can I (horsehead) just say EVH is over-rated & anybody that has been in Metallica
-
Can I (horsehead) just say EVH is over-rated & anybody that has been in Metallica
Ron McGovney is over-rated???!!
(sorry. and yes, you can say that)
-
SGmypod said it, I just agreed!
Yeah, sorry, I thought you said "Gary says" to avoid flak for slagging off (or not, as it turned out) Joe Perry!
See how confusing this thread has become?
-

i.e. - not really overrated at all.
Yeah, fair enough, that is a considerable downside to Page. In fact I recently found out one of my favourite riffs of 'his' is actually an old B.B King lick!
-
Well, since Philly asked :) and still no b*gger has mentioned Jeff or Hank...well apart from me of course!
1) EVH
2) Jeff Beck
3) Hank Marvin
4) Ritchie Blackmore
5) Michael Lee Firkins
Last one probably isn't actually in my top 5...but a great guitarist and something different in the instrumental stakes :)
-
^Massive props for mentioning Firkins!
-
my 5 are as follows:
Shawn Lane
Frank Zappa
Ron Thal (bumblefoot)
Jeff Beck
Joe Satriani
there are SO many more than 5 which makes it very difficult, I can think of 50 at least!
-
Luc Lemay
Pat Metheny
Holdsworth
Brett Garsed
Albert King
And lots more I'm forgetting.
-
SGmypod said it, I just agreed!
Can I (horsehead) just say EVH is over-rated & anybody that has been in Metallica
Cliff Burton and Rob Trujillo overrated?
They're absolutely incredible bassists.
-
I was just about to mention Cliff, then I saw the edit!
-
I was just about to mention Cliff, then I saw the edit!
I forgot him for 3 mins - Then went "Oh !£&$" and editted asap :p
-
Speaking of incredible bassists, Stu Hamm slayed at the Joe Satriani concert last night. I've never seen anyone shred on bass like that before.
-

Stu Hamm is AWESOME.
-
Jeff Healey!!! Gotta love him, RIP.
-
In no particular order as well...
1. Gary Moore
2. Frank Marino
3. Jimi Hendrix
4. Joe Bonamassa
5. Tom Rogers...jk, sorry there, it'd have to be Jimmy Page
Funny how they mainly did blues rock music. I'd add Robin Trower, but then he'd be 6
-

Nice one! I haven't listened to him for many a year, must do something about that. :)
-
in order
1) Eric Johnson
2) Joe Satriani
3) Zakk Wylde
4) Richie Sambora (flame away)
5) Steve Vai
In reality Johnson and Satch are way above the other 3
-
Brian May
Gary Moore
Jason Becker
Randy Rhodes
Slash
-
listing just five is tough, so I'll mention players who shaped my style the most...
(1) Angus
(2) Kossoff
(3) Clapton/Bluesbreakers
(4) Iommi
(5) Hendrix
-
Page is overrated because he steals someone else's entire technique and composition (e.g.
Lets also add
Whole Lotta Love (originally You Need Love by Willie Dixon)
Dazed & confused (written by Jake Holmes) I have a copy of the original Holmes version and it's fecking excellent, it even has the spacey breakdown bit
He also stole the violin bow businesss of Eddie Phillips :?
Overrated I don't know but I enjoyed his earlier stuff a lot
-
SGmypod said it, I just agreed!
Can I (horsehead) just say EVH is over-rated & anybody that has been in Metallica
Cliff Burton and Rob Trujillo overrated?
They're absolutely incredible bassists.
Wasn't talking bassists
-
I don't know why I keep forgetting to put Brian May in these lists.
I like his playing, technique and style, I like his sound, everything.
Why do I keep forgetting him then?
-
I struggle with the "overrated" thing - how should we define overrated?
someone liked/loved by everyone else but whom you hate (or at least, maybe not hate, but can't see the attraction).
I'd definite "overrated" as a person liked by many but not by me, making the person overrated in my opinion. That makes overratedness entirely subjective, as it should be.
ah, beaten to it.
Speaking of incredible bassists, Stu Hamm slayed at the Joe Satriani concert last night. I've never seen anyone shred on bass like that before.
Stu Hamm is AWESOME.
agreed. :)
-
In no particular order:
Mikael Akerfedlt.
Paco de Lucia.
Guthrie Govan.
Al di Meola.
Buckethead.
Honourable mentions to...
John Williams.
John Petrucci.
the guy from Necrophagist (Suicmez?).
-
How to start a riot....
but in my overrated list...Brian May..man with a guitar that has 30 odd sounds..but only produces one
-
Yeah, but what a sound!
And he's great at using effects....
-
See I just don't get it..out of how many albums I could pick about 3 songs...but most of the time his sound grates on me
-
In no particular order:
Tony Iommi
Randy Rhoads
Michael Schenker
Jimmy Page
Angus Young
Although I would also like to include:
Richtie Blackmore
Jerry Cantrell
Paul Kossoff
Billy Gibbons
Robin Trower
-
I would never pick Brian May as a favourite guitar player, but I do like a fair amount of Queen stuff - Shear Heart Attack is a phenominal album. Everything else they did pales in comparison.
(edit)... and ahem, while we're at it - why is there no single coil to get the Brian May tone?
-
over-rated = Pete Townsend
-
over-rated = Pete Townsend
he once said he was better than Clapton..this was when Eric was at the top of his game...and any live concert of him now he just goes of and plays random notes...badly

I've never heard anything like that before - if anything he has always seemed very humble about his abilities as a guitarist.
-
Was on a 60/70's film about the band, roots etc
-
Best duos:
Bernie Marsden/Micky Moody
Chris De Garmo/Michael Wilton
Dave Murray/Adrian Smith
Rudolph Schenker /Matthias Jabs
Glen Tipton/KK Downing
Brad Gillis/Geoff Watson (Night Ranger)
Paul Stanley /Bruce Kulick (although I'd chose Stanley /Frehley on a good day)
Scott Gorham/ Brian Robertson (or whoever else was in Lizzy)
And this is mainly based on bands that I enjoy listening to

and these two...
* Hanneman/King - you can't go past these guys, though admittedly they owe alot to Tipton/Downing.
and these two weren't too shabby either...
* Friedman/Mustaine
-
My favourite duos:
Andy Powell/Laurie Wisefield (Wishbone Ash... sorry Ted)
Angus & Malcolm Young (AC/DC)
Bruce Franklin/Rick Wartell (Trouble)
Rudolf Schenker/Ulrich Roth (Scorpions... since Jonathan already mentioned Schenker/Jabs)
Rick Medlocke/Charlie Hargrett (Blackfoot)
And trios:
Dave Murray/Adrian Smith/Janick Gers (Iron Maiden)
Gary Rossington/Allen Collins/Ed King (and successors... Lynyrd Skynyrd)
Dave Hlubek/Duane Roland/Steve Holland (Molly Hatchet!!! :D )
-
Five favourites at the minute.
Mick Kenney
Jus Oborne
Steve Von Till
Bill Steer
Anders Bjorler
None of them particularly outstanding technically bar Bjorler's right hand but all of them write some bloody marvelous songs.
Five Overrated
Hendrix
Vai
Petrucci
Hanneman and King
Anyone that has ever been in a band that could in anyway be described as power metal.
-
My 5 faves in no particular order are;
Tommy Victor (Prong)
Dave Brock (Hawkwind)
Joe Satriani
Steve Hillage (Gong, System7 etc)
Jimi Hendrix
I've included Joe Satriani although he remains an enigma to me, living proof (IMO) that fabulous tone and technique don't neccessarily make for great compositional skills. 30% of his stuff I absolutely love but the other 70% leaves me cold. To me it's like twee shopping mall muzak and truley cringeworthy even though his skill as a player is apparent throughout.
Anyone else think the same ???? :?
-
yes
-

I kinda think that, but I'd liken some of his stuff to incidental music in a film. Not always great, but compositionally sound, if you know what I mean.
-
Ha! We're up to duos and trios now :D
Not much to add really though :(
Five duos:
Powell/Wisefield in Wishbone Ash (I agree with Philly, sorry Ted, I do like your playing too, but...)
Gorham/Robertson in Thin Lizzy (other pairings were good, but that's the one for me)
Medlocke/Hargrett in Blackfoot
Angus/Malcolm
Papa George/Stevie Simpson (not sure how many outside London will have come across these guys, but a few years back I used to see them every Sunday lunchtime in Surbiton in "The Monday Band" - they're good in their own right, but were stunning together...)
Trios, there's only one 3-git band I really like, Lynyrd Skynyrd - and I preferred the Rossington/Collins/Gaines trio (don't know a great deal about the post 76 line-ups)
-
Glad to see another Laurie Wisefield fan, Andy! :D
I thought of another trio that really does deserve a mention:
Peter Green, Danny Kirwan and Jeremy Spencer
-
Of course!!! ^ wot he said - I was racking my brains, but couldn't think of another.
The Lynyrd Skynyrd one gets my vote though - probably most of us know what a mess it can become when 3 guitarists get together in the same room... I'm still utterly dumbfounded how Lynyrd Skynyrd managed to make what is basically bar-room music sound so tight and powerful, with 3 blokes all widdling away at once!
(not really listened to Iron Maiden much since Powerslave... quite possibly they've achieved it as well)
-
(not really listened to Iron Maiden much since Powerslave... quite possibly they've achieved it as well)
(Assuming you still like the early stuff) you really should give Brave New World and Dance Of Death a go - the band has been as good or better than ever before since Smith and Dickinson rejoined.
I always liked Maiden, but never took them very seriously - largely due to the giant Eddie puppets, spandex pants and all those galloping riffs. But the recent material is absolutely superb, with some wonderful melodies and guitar arrangements.
-
Cheers for that Philly - I'd been wondering about what to sample.
I saw them with Paul Dianno (supporting on the British Steel tour) and thought they were rubbish(!). I saw them on their Powerslave tour and found them very slick and professional but a bit boring. I also saw them at a Reading festival around the same time (Lemmy and Fast Eddie joined them for Tush - the first time they'd been seen in public together after the Wendy O Williams bust up of Motorhead) and I thought they were brilliant, but I'd become a blueser by then and Judas Priest is about the only "metal" outfit I've really followed ever since then...
But they (Maiden) have lasted a hell of long time, and I'm getting the impression (from this forum mainly) that they've had a bit of a rebirth... so I was thinking of checking them out.
-

Nope
Hes way popular and I like 1 riff or song in 10. And thats just 'like'.
The only good thing that can be said for page, IMO, is that he brought Robert-Johnson-But-Louder to the masses.
-
Anyone that has ever been in a band that could in anyway be described as power metal.

Don't you manage nuclear waste or something? Very worrying indeed.

Anyone that has ever been in a band that could in anyway be described as power metal.
Like say... oh I dunno, Tim Mills?
Well, to be fair, it'd be hard to call Tim overrated because very few people know who he is. Even within the PM scene and probably even within Iced Earth fandom.
Jon Schaffer absolutely is though, because I couldn't care less how technically capable a player he is, he still writes absolutely fucking shit songs.
EDIT: Although I'll denounce Tim on principle because I really do feel that strongly about power metal.

Can't say I agree with you, but fair enough. My opinion of Jon Schaffer is exactly reverse of yours, actually. Although he does have a tight picking hand, his technique isn't great (from what he has shown at least) but I think he's writes some of (if not the) most dynamic, powerful, and beautiful metal in the scene today. Sure it's a bit cheesy, all power metal is, but I can live with that.

Nope
Hes way popular and I like 1 riff or song in 10. And thats just 'like'.
The only good thing that can be said for page, IMO, is that he brought Robert-Johnson-But-Louder to the masses.
Something is wrong with your brain.
