Hi guys - I'm all sorted for classic sounds now and the next target on my LONG list of guitars I would like (sorry NEED) is an 80's hair metal type guitar....
I'm thinking double cutaway, floyd rose type, stupid colour and mad humbucker...
I don't want to spend a fortune - few hundred quid at the most but I don't want a dog. I was thinking on the lines of Kramer/Jackson sort of thing.
This guitar is just for a bit of fun - and I don't know that much about them. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Cheers
Matt

I've got a kramer focus 1000, theyre the japanese made ones, made in the ESP factory i think. still pretty good quality with OFR and single humbucker, mine came with a dimarzio superdistortion (swapped out for painkiller  )
they dont come in metal enough colours, but pretty easy to take apart and get painted if you wanted
they seem to go pretty cheap sometimes, just takes a bit of looking.

You gotta love Hair Metal gee-tars ;)
My Road Flare Red Ibanez RG550s (two original 87/88s and an RG20th reissue):

My Pearlescent White Kramer Baretta (from 86/87):
You might get a beat up Ibanez for £200-£300 if you're very lucky, but I've not seen a neon one on eBay for a loooooooooong time.
My black Jackson in the pic above is for sale at £275 if you can live without the bright colour ;)
-
The model series Charvels are another option. Jap quality at not much money.
-
My Ibanez S540.Floyd, humbuckers, pointy headstock and coloured like a tarts handbag. Kramers can be cheap. (http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii98/marantz1300/100_0179.jpg) (http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii98/marantz1300/100_0173.jpg)

You just missed an RG505 neon yellow on eBay.
Dunno if anyone bought it though so it might pop up again.
-
I like the look of Jake E Lee's guitars for the 80's - as far as strats go anyway

[cough] No you haven't! [/cough] :P
Although some are better than others, I must admit.... my favourite is the Hamer Diablo. A few times I've almost bought one, but ultimately the Floyd put me off.
Dave's black Jackson (Jackson's Jackson!) doesn't look too bad, actually....
-
This is a shockingly bad display of 'hair metal' guitars, 'cept for the Kramer Baretta which is badass.
I have no idea what you consider 'hair metal'. Personally, I don't even know what that is. When you find out, let me know. PDT_008
-
any bands that play metal, that also have hair? so pretty much all metal bands
my bandmates got a kramer nightswan, now thats a badass guitar
-
The problem with so-called "hair metal" guitars at the price you're talking about is the Floyd. A decent Floyd (i.e. an OFR or a Schaller) costs nearly that much on its own, so a new guitar at that price is going to have a cheap clone made of low grade soft steel rather than a decent one - the cheap Jacksons (i.e. the ones made in India) are especially bad for this.
Realistically, I would trawl ebay/shops that have used stock etc - Charvels, Kramers etc from the 80s turn up from time to time & can be had for a decent price. A guitar that would have cost >£600 when it was new in 1988 will be a far better guitar, even with the wear'n'tear, than a new one costing half that amount now...
-
One other thing - guitars made today with "Kramer" & "BC Rich" on the headstock have absolutely nothing in common with the guitars that those brands made in the mid-80s...
-
Yeah, I wouldn't buy new. You need to find an older one. The Ibanez RG505 is a good bet if you can find one at a decent price. I forgot they brought back Desert Yellow for a little while in the late nineties.
-
Good advice guys - I like the look of the Kramer Beretta and the ibanez colurs look great. Its the price of the new Kramers that worried me. I'm not knocking cheap guitars but what can you produce for £100?
Looks like its an old Kramer then.....guitarguitar have a nice Jackson in a ridiculous orange which I quite like too.
Oh and hair metal - think spandex, think backcombed big hair, possibly eye liner, think chest hair, think David lee Roth - thats Hair Metal

I'm not really into definitions, but when I hear the term Hair Metal I always think of bands like Danger Danger, Trixter, Brighton Rock, Slaughter.... not as glam as Poison, not quite as poppy as Warrant, none of them actually very good (in fact being "not very good" was almost a requirement! ).
-
I once had a great Yamaha RGX Custom - lots of pointy bits etc - they are pretty rare but great 'hair rock' guitars
Best picture that I could find is

If we are thinking of the bands that came around 1987-91 and were what most people think of as hair metal **
Then it is mostly superstrats with floyds
Kramers
Hamers
Charvel
Jackson
Larrivee
ESP
** It's interesting as fans who grew up with a lot of the bands that later get grouped into "Hair Metal", never saw their bands as that , and often felt the term was very derogatory and insulting.
Van Halen were not hair metal - they came from the 70s
Whitesnake also hailed from the 70s but were restyled for the benefit of MTV and selling mllions of albums
Motley Crue , Ratt, Wasp, Dokken, Black N Blue, Keel, Teeze, Great White , Y&T , Lizzy Borden , Kix also weren't hair metal - some were just considered glam rock, others just rock.
Some were guilty of bowing to pressure from the record companies to jump on the bandwagon and dress a different way to get more MTV airplay
I never saw Bon Jovi or Cinderella as Hair Metal but the lines started to get blurred - Cinderella stayed true to their roots whilst Bon Jovi went very corporate to make millions
I guess the 2nd wave of bands like Poison, Warrant, Bulletboys, Britny Fox, Every Mothers Nightmare, Danger Danger, Enuf Znuff, White Lion, Skid Row , Vain etc were considered Hair Metal
-
Surely the BC Rich Gunslinger Retro would be perfect for this?
-
it's not from the time, but the Maverick F1 fits the description, and can be had in some fairly wacky colours. there are even some out there with "custom" paint jobs. my own is bright pink :)

The red Japanese Charvel is for sale btw, am willing to negotiate on price if you're interested! ;)
-
For a bit of irony, I have just retired my old "hair metal" guitar, which has been the backup to my Les Paul for years  as the frets are so worn it is unplayable, and the Schaller trem is buggered and only the original will fit (cheapest I can find is £250!!) so not viable to repair.
The guitar is a Charvel Fusion Custom in dark metalic red. Unusual for it's Gibson scale length rather than the usual Fender one used on "Super-Strats" Was a nice guitar, if a little 1-dimensional, the 2 single coil hot rails were so poor I only ever used the bridge humbucker.
-
Nowt wrong with Charvels, Bezez and Hamers, even older ESPs, nope, nothing wrong at all.

Holy cow! How many guitars have you got?

Shobet, I love the Hamers. Are they Chaparrals?

Shobet, I love the Hamers. Are they Chaparrals?
Or are they Centauras? :)
-
These pics are just great - reminds me of my teenage guitar playing days (probably why I want one)
-
Hair Metal = This:
-
always loved Tigertailz! and i believe they've used one of those Royal guitars on stage recently
-
Pepsi Tate RIP.
Kevin Chilcott, the guy who ran Royal guitars, is still around. They're now called Royale, and he makes guitars for Andy Powell.
-
Hair metal will be back - all it takes is some of these emo types I see round town to cheer up a bit - buy a hairdryer and some super hard 'studio line' extra hold gel and we are off!
-
Shobet, I love the Hamers. Are they Chaparrals?

Indeed they are Centauras, and you can pick 'em up cheap if you can find them. The diablos, californians and chaperrals are harder to come by and fetch a bit more money.
I blame Priest and Living Colour for my love of Hamers.

+1, exactly. :)

Now there's a band! :D
But I remember Vernon Reid more for his green/white/pink muliticolour ESP with EMGs and a little hologram sticker between the pickups. I spent ages trying to find those stickers! Went to a great gig at the Marquee where I was standing right at the front hanging on to Vernon's monitors (sounds painful!) for the whole show.

At the risk of being pedantic, White Lion and Poison are the only two there that are second wave, all the rest are third wave...it's usually done on the release date of their debut album
1981-4; First wave, bands like Motley Crue, WASP. Innovators of the style.
1985-7: Second wave, Poison, White Lion. Most had formed in the first wave era and were influenced by them rather than pioneering the style themselves.
1988 + : Third and final wave, most only got a few releases out before being crushed by Grunge. Imitated the imitators, and by and large sucked a whole lot of c--k while they did it. Britny Fox is an abomination.

Oh god, I knew we'd end up getting all definition-y.....
Makes a change to be talking about Hair Metal instead of Black, Death, Extreme.... whatever metal, I suppose.
I hope you don't include Enuff Z'Nuff as "imitating the imitators and sucking a whole lot of c--k". They are (well, were) excellent, I don't care what wave they surfed in on....

Nope. Theirs has a rosewood board, is well beat up, as is priced at £999
I got mine a while back (from them actually) in superb condition for £499.....

Sorry, I didn't mean they were of alternate persuasions, I meant that I think they're terrible. My point was that the early bands of the hair metal movement have by and large been the most popular (GnR being an exception).

Yeah, I didn't think you were implying they were Friends of Dorothy! We'll have to agree to disagree (to an extent), I love Enuff Z'Nuff, and probably some of the other "third wave" bands too.
I can't deny that Britny Fox were truly terrible, but I do really like that song!

I saw them support Anthrax in 1988 two nights on the trot at The Hammersith Odeon. They were great and he was the first shredder I had seen live at the time. I was about 5 rows in one night. Anthrax though were out of this world for me at that time!

I know a shop selling a USA made Diablo in clear amber finish for about 300 quid. They don't ship outside of Japan though.

Yes - I would say spot on
And there were good bands and poor ones in each era, but the record companies ended up signing anything in Lycra with big hair in the end rather than being selective, which is why grunge seemed so refreshing to many when it kicked in
I quite liked some Britney Fox although they were poor Cinderella imitators with a touch of slade.
Heck I even really liked Warrant
One WASP album worth checking out if you want something a bit more serious than their early stuff is an album called The Crimson Idol- a concept album and clearly showing The Who as influences.

Yeah, the "concept" is ridiculous (like most concept abums), but there are some great songs on it. I think when's he's on form Blackie is an amazing singer - but it gets obscured by the OTT image.

I love WASP, I prefer the more 'fun' songs but some of the darker ones are great too. One of my favourite WASP albims is Helldorado but I don't think anyone else likes it. 8)

That was my first Metal gig too! I remember walking out after the first night, speechless, like I had just been visited by a higher authority! How the hell did they play their guitars, drum so fast and hard? I went the next night too and my ears were ringing for days after that. The ticket price was around 8 quid a night. Would have been around 90p a pint too. Happy days! :D
I remember seeing Britny Fox on telly and I thought the singer had throat cancer or some shite. Can't say I liked them or Warrant. Motley Crue were good. You should have seen the amount of uber bitches at their gig at Wembley Arena in 1989! Great night, we had Skid Row and White Lion on the same bill and a guest appearance by Billy Idol with MC for the encore! 20 quid off a tout I payed for that. :D
On topic, Vernon reid had the multi coloured ESP. Scott Ian, ok they were thrash but had use of the same gear of the day, had an ESP with NOT past the 12 fret mark on the fret board but no frets higher than 12. Dan Spitz used RR Jackson V. Its got the same mid boost pre-amp as a model 6 Charvel. Which is why i bought one
When I were a lad.... I've become one of them!

Good grief! You're making me feel really old...
Wot a bunch of youngsters... "Anthrax/Living Colour", even as first or first metal gig
I know there's older than me here but I tend to regard all the bands mentioned on this thread (those that I've heard of!) as young upstarts  (from my perspective, even Guns and Roses is one of they "modern hair-spray bands" who copy the old stuff, they're ok but don't quite cut it - and then I get quite surprised to see how old they are now )
I have sneaking feeling that I've seen Cinderella - might that have been supporting Judas Priest at the Hammy Odeon? - but my recollection is along the lines of "WTF is this nob? Where's the bar?" (it was very crowded when I got there...).
However, Living Colour, from wot I saw on the tv, I did like :D
For the original topic though - I can't add much, except I do have nice metal guitar http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=13964.0 (http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=13964.0), does that help? :D

my favorite WASP album is Headless Children. i was very disappointed by the crimson idol. don't think i've actually heard much that they've done since.
my first gig was Alice Cooper on the Trash tour, with Great White (who i loved) and who was the first band on? Britney Fox!! yay! ;)

I've got Headless Children, its a great album. I saw them on the tour too at the H. Odeon. I got a Johnny Rod Plectrum....great eh!

the b-sides of forever free were recorded live at the hammersmith odeon on that tour, so i've probably heard you shouting through my hi-fi! ;)

Heck I even really liked Warrant
One WASP album worth checking out if you want something a bit more serious than their early stuff is an album called The Crimson Idol- a concept album and clearly showing The Who as influences.
I love WASP, one of my top 5 bands purely for Headless Children, Crimson Idol and Unholy Terror/Hell For Eternity. Warrant aren't too bad, I own their best of, bit cheesy though!

I remember seeing Britny Fox on telly and I thought the singer had throat cancer or some shitee. :D
I caught a White Lion drumstick at that gig and got hit on the bonce by a Tommy Lee one at the end. Didn't Lemmy do one of the encores with them as well?

Wolfgang anyone?

Tommy Lee's drum solo was fuking mental, he had all these huge speaker cones on his drum rig, which went up in the air and flipped over and over with him strapped in the chair. Right over the crowd as well.
Cool a drum stick and a plectrum form the 80s!
I never saw Lemmy on the night I went. I remember the women there though, my jaw was on the floor they were tits and fish nets all over the shop it was like being at a porn convention!

They took the updide-down drumkit idea from Mick Mars' previous band. Obviously they improved on it a bit  :

Did anybody go to Skid Row supported by Vain at Hammersmith soon after?
Steve Harris played Wrathchild with them for the encore!!
Great gig...
And the WOMEN AT MOTLEY were F**kin' amazin'!

I was at the Motley gig at Wembley - was one of the better gigs I have seen Motley play
Did anyone else here see them at the Marquee in 89 when they went by the name of "The four Skins" ?
And yes - glam rock and hair metal gigs always were great for girls getting dressed up
