what would be the best way to remove a black marker pen rock star signature from a nitro finished guitar?
-
try some naptha (zippo lighter fluid) on a bit of cloth, or rebuff it with something like t-cut
-
Whose signature is it?

Whose signature is it?
johnny winter

:o Don't rub it off! Or at least show us a pic first.

its not my guitar (yet, if ever!), just pondering on it.

heres the sig
i wasn't really aware of johnny winter's work, but i've just checked youtube and he seems a very talented player... nothing really to do with the music i make though
-
no joy with the lighter fluid... what about something stronger like turps?
-
Get Feline to refinish it and send Mr Winter the bill!
I'm not sure about turps - I wouldn't put it on my Explorer, or at least not on an exposed bit. I have a feeling it would be ok, but I've enough of a nagging doubt. I'm not sure it would do the job either... Acetone is another one I'd be interested in as solvent but scared of putting on nitro.
You need the experts
-
tried the turps - didn't remove signature, didn't damage the nitro
-
iso-alcohol also not working
-
toothpaste - no effect
-
Ah, you've moved to the bathroom cabinet... hmmm
Germolene?
Preparation H?
(Running out of ideas here...)
So have you bought this beast yet then? (or is the owner trusting you try out various solvents on it )
-
Daft question.. But the last owner hasn't lacquered over the signature have they?
-
Try and get a marker that looks very similar, and try and incorporate the signature into a tribal design on the V... should be able to get it to blend it pretty good ;)
-
try t-cut, its a bit more abrasive so should actually rub it off. if that doesnt move it then chances are its under a coat of lacquer
so is this a NGD we need to know about!!

tried some heavy duty t-cut... its not moving. under the light, the signature appears to be under a coat of laquer

edit: anything your paint guy can do wez?
-
it would be a strip back, hopefully not going through base coat and re lacquer with clear.
My paint guy specialises in new or complete refinishes... not as much experience with touch-ups and i am guessing you want to save as much of the original finish as possible.

Doesn't sound like he tried the Preparation-H, does it?
-
Get a marker pen and trace over the signature and then try cleaning it off with a cloth and some cleaning fluid. Works on white boards, not sure if it will work on a guitar though!

What a stoopid thing to say. I now realise the signature is under a coat of laquer  Must go to bed now!

FTW!!!

I had the same problem with a 60's strat, it had Hendrix's signature on it, had to spray over it in the end :D

He's a major player, many people list him as their guitar hero, he's quite old and has a poor health record. I'd keep it on.
