Title: Least favourite guitar shape
Post by: hamfist on March 22, 2009, 04:38:40 PM
In a similar vein to Antag's new thread, let us all know the guitar shapes that you truly hate !

Mine in the strat. I just detest them. Can't imagine why anyone should want to play one.

the crow/can opener shaped gibson corvus is one that usually comes up... although i actually think its got real potential and have been doing some drawings based on it  (as have a few others over at projectguitar.com)

my least favorite is the dean razorback or that one that combines a V with an SG... is it the splittail or something like that??

i dislike non-cbs strat headstocks. i used to dislike the strat look in general, but i've grown to appreciate it.

still don't really like the tele-look, though the great sound makes up for it. not sure i have a least favourite shape as such. some ultra-pointy metal guitar shapes go a bit too far.

corvus is beautiful, i wonder what will come of wez's sketches.. its alot better as a headless

Teles, just really not that keen on them.
I think the splittail has got potential, maybe HSS with a Floyd, white with black binding. but I really don't like where they put the input jack on them

I can't stand V's.

I also detest "pointy" headstocks, hated them when they came out in the 1980s and still hate them now...

Pretty cool with everything else though.

It's Metal shapes all the way for me, I'm afraid:

OK, I'm going to limit myself to guitars I've actually owned or played (you'll get no argument from me about the utter vileness of the BC Rich Beast, Dean Razorback or that ridiculous Zakk Wylde abortion Gibson recently dreamt up...)

So I'll say Jackson Warrior.  It pains me to say anything bad about anything with Jackson on the headstock, but the Warrior is just flat out hideous:

Dean Razorback. It's horrible and Dean have whored the Razorback idea so much that Dean sickens me.

BC Rich Beast, it looks cool to me but it's so uncomfortable to play.

BC Rich Zombie, horrible bloody thing.

Bc Rich Stealth, although it's asociated with a really great guitarist, it looks goofy to me.

Gibson's Reverse V and Explorer. .....why?..

Not a big fan of most of the 'metal' shapes, although I'd single out the splittail for particular criticism. I also don't really like the Fender Jazzmaster shape very much - used think it was ok until I played one, and I just didn't get on with the shape at all.

For me it has always been the Veleno "The Original" which looks exactly like what would happen if you asked an artisitcally untalented six year old to draw a Strat.  To compound the misery it has a ruby imbedded in the headstock so it's not only monumentally awful, it's tacky as well.

Well, his early solo albums are quite poppy, and his recent stuff is more blues (and even jazz).  Most of his albums are quite patchy, but there are always one or two gems.

I like the mid/late '70s stuff he did with Derringer (the band) - Derringer, Sweet Evil and If I Weren't So Romantic, I'd Shoot You.  And the solo albums from that period - Guitars and Women and Face to Face.

And of course the Johnny Winter And... Live album.

When he came up with the Stealth design (about '83?) he had two projects on the go, but I think they're both unavailable now - the Good Dirty Fun album (lots of guitar on that one) and a project with Carmine Appice called DNA.

Were those guitars drawn in MS Paint!??!

They dont look real. At all.

But yeah, most BC riches - very silly, ESP Fs as well.

I also dont like Vs. King Vs are better, but still irritating.

I dont like les pauls or SGs, asthetically or for playing.

Or PRSs, again, in both categories.

And, of course, teles.

Actually, about the only shapes I do really like are strats, superstrats (fav) and explorers (2nd).

Rick Derringer designed or co-designed the Stealth back in the 1970s

Right, my least favourite is officially "Most BC riches"

So many of them cross a line into such depths of hideousness that the reaction of my sense of asthetics is about the same level of revulsion; theres no point trying to fine tune it and say "I hate the beast more than the ironbird". Not worth the effort.

I am not keen on Vee's or any pointy guitars( Mr Bump expressed exactly how I feel). Metal guitars are not very pleasant for me but obviously we are all different and I realise that many love them and hate the more staid Strat, Tele and Les Paul's and Semis that I love. I am not a fan of headless guitars either for that matter.

I think thats silly, gimmicky and an un-imaginative sugar-hit for gibson sales, but its not immediately replusive

The mental image of the gibson fat cats trying to recall the granduer and vision of their predacessors sitting in a video conference using horrific management speak and deluding themselves that they know that THIS is exactly what the guitarist of today really wants is repulsive, but the guitar not so much.

Well it'll be of no surprise to anyone here, except maybe Fernando, that my absolute least favourite guitar shape is...

[Drum Roll]...

The dispicable, unfathomable, bulbous, cheap-looking, tacky, overly-simplistic, slack-jawed, limp-wristed utter hideousness that is the Telecaster.

I hate hate hate hate HATE HATE HATE HHHAAATTTEEE the telecaster.

And in VERY CLOSE second place are most BC Rich pointy things (as outlined above), and that wrong V/SG hybrid failure.

I'm not that much of a fan of the LP shape - I do prefer the top horn cut away, but at least in LPs it doesn't just look cack like it does on teles. And don't even get me started on that sh*tty headstock and god-awful control plate, bridge and pickup design. God it's awful.

Right, I feel a bit better now, off to murder kittens and strangle puppies before bedtime.

Yes indeed, as later echoed by Hunter - and alluded to by MDV ; given the price tag - and the wasted opportunity for genuinely aestheticaly pleasing /  fun  innovation, what were they thinking ?

I remain MUCH more impressed by that Pink, Warpig equipped  and customised " Hello Kitty " Strat I saw on here yesterday - and I am NOT  being facetious.   That ' Brootal ' Kitty was ( and is ) the mutts nutts compared to this concept.

Lol, you've all reminded me that there have been some truly, truly, almost unbelievably aesthetically monstrous guitars made. The Corvus, Moderne and the two Minarik guitars are an absolute hoot !
And, sorry Wes, really don't like that guitar (although I wouldn't class it as monstrous).

There seems to be an almost universal loathing of most of the pointy metal things (who does actually buy these ? - I never see them except on shop walls, although I don't get out much unless I'm playing myself).

They were I presume they were aimed at young metal heads but missed the target completely. They had all these castles, dragons carved or molded into the body shapes. No one was playing them. Because I spent most of my day either on the Bkp or Feline stand I noticed that no one was stopping to have a go on them.
I wonder if Afghan or Feline can remember who they were. Its worth a google search for them if we can remember the name. I don't think I've ever seen anything so foul in a guitar before!

OK question:
If Dean style 'have someone’s eye out' metal guitars are so hated (to which I concur) why is my local guitar store FULL OF THE BUGGERS!

P.S
I must admit that I don’t like the SG shape, although I love the feel of playing my SG (but while I am playing I can't see the shape so it doesn’t bother me).

It kind of looks like the "elephant man" of the guitar world - the headstock is all swollen and deformed, and as for that lower horn - LOL!  The only thing that could make that guitar worse would be to tele-ify the top horn (which would then match the dubious sexuality of the lower horn) and add the foul tele bridge and control plate. Then, truly, the most hideous guitar in the world would have been created.
I love the title of that ebay sale: "MUST SEE"   !!!!! Now my eyes burrrrnnn and I can't see!!!

Yep - that must be the winner.

All the metal angular guitars (though I like V's and Explorers), and also any guitars with sharp edges or points (Minarik Guitars especially make a lot of these).

WTF?

Were those guitars drawn in MS Paint!??!

They dont look real. At all.

But yeah, most BC riches - very silly, ESP Fs as well.

I also dont like Vs. King Vs are better, but still irritating.

I dont like les pauls or SGs, asthetically or for playing.

Or PRSs, again, in both categories.

And, of course, teles.

Actually, about the only shapes I do really like are strats, superstrats (fav) and explorers (2nd).

I really quite like the ESP F - Especially the F7 with the sanskrit inlay. Really cool guitar.

Theres jus something about it that makes it look like a goth kid - its trying to be all mean and tough and evil but really it wet the bed till it was 14, has never had a girlfriend and is terrified of pretty much everything.

Actually the reason I like it is cos I think its the only one of the "metal" guitars that doesn't have that image!

I mean, I think this looks great:

Ah, I didn't realise that was the ESP "F"!

I really, really like that shape - it's one of the very few "metal"/Floyd/black hardware guitars I'd seriously consider buying, even though I'd look an utter fool holding one.

I love most of the classic 70s BC Rich guitars, apart from the seagull
Bitch
Mockingbird
Eagle
Warlock
Stealth
were all great looking guitars
Didnt like the Wave much and the ST3 and gunslingers were just (super)strat a likes - so nothing to dislike

I loathe the Virgin, Beast and pretty much all the newer stuff

I like Neil Moser the man  (designed the  Rich Bitch) but many of the recent Moser designs almost have too many curly bits for their own good

I like the Dean ML, but hate the Razorback
Just like the BC Rich beast it is way too cumbersome

I am a big flying V fan and also like the Rhoads and King V too

Explorers and Ibanez Iceman are firm faves too

I loathe 335s - not for the shape but for how impossible they are to work on electrically - keyhole surgery through the F Hole
Put a rear access cover on them and they would be a joy.

There's two version, the cheaper one with fewer vertices. And the more expensive one (see pic). Then you have the G and the GT with H-S or H-H configurations.

One's like the F400FM are the cheaper looking model.

Agreed.  That is truly bizarre !!

That's the first guitar which has actually made me laugh out loud when I first saw the picture !

I remember those, didn't realise they were so cheapo!

I wonder what Roo would make of that.... talk about "bulbous bits"....  :?

It kind of looks like the "elephant man" of the guitar world - the headstock is all swollen and deformed, and as for that lower horn - LOL!  The only thing that could make that guitar worse would be to tele-ify the top horn (which would then match the dubious sexuality of the lower horn) and add the foul tele bridge and control plate. Then, truly, the most hideous guitar in the world would have been created.
I love the title of that ebay sale: "MUST SEE"   !!!!! Now my eyes burrrrnnn and I can't see!!!

Yeah, that was a bit upsetting - please don't link anything like that again jibidy!!

Does anyone remember those dreadful things that were on display next to Felines Stand at the 2007 LGS? I wish I could remember the name, they were so bad. Red Plasticy dragons and castles. I mean did the bloke behind those designs actually expect they would sell? Talk about out of touch!  :x
ummm, perhaps my memory is at fault, but wasn't the PRS stand next to Feline at LGS 07? :)

Joking aside, did you mean those really weird flying-V derived things with arched tops & F-holes?  I can't remember the name either but didn't see anyone paying any attention to them all day - I was haf tempted to go over there & ask to try one out of sympathy.... :)

The Flying V ones were really nice guitars made by Case Guitars - Tim borrowed one for a while - they all had BK pickups on them (with a wierd back height adjust option.  I know the one he tried used the hipshot Grand Piano bridge.  They didn't have anything molded into them (they were opposite Feline and behind BK at LGS2007).

Put some surgical tubing on the shafts of the pots and switch to get them out and through the F-holes and back in with minimal fuss.

Roo, if you don't like designs of the fifties and you don't like pointy stuff either, better stop playing ANY electric guitar. Apart from the pointy and horny designs, all guitar shapes are designed in the fifties. Les Pauls, Strats, Teles, V's, Explorers etc.

Yeah - John Case was opposite me
Nice guy and some nice guitars - he's also a good graphic artist too

I know Tim tried the hollow V - not sure if he kept it
I too thought it was interesting although unusual
The odd f hole may have been a knot in the wood to start with but it was a charming feature.

I also had Dave Sharp from Northumberland next to me at this show with his unusual guitars

I think they built a fort like structure for their demo guy to stand in/on and play widdly guitar solos

And Gibson and Fender aren't?

Let's go through the gretsch catalogue. The Tennessee Rose line are all sixties guitars and so are all the double cut guitars. The corvette is also 60's. The Power Jet is a fifties guitar with modern upgrades, as are the Setzer models, the Billy-Bo is brand new, the 125th Anniversary is brand new.

If Gretsch is stuck in the fifties, then so are all the other companies.

For guitars, I'm stuck in the 50's and early 60's - and proud of it

For guitar sounds I'm stuck in the 50's - 70's...

Alas this means the only companies likely to get my money are those similarly stuck in those years... or those that are pandering to the tastes of me and thousands like me...

Ah well, I don't really approve of this thread cos it proves nothing except negative things about all of us , but it's a good read none-the-less :D

Telecaster. There's just nothing they could have done to make it more ugly. Except maybe put a naked picture of Rosie on there but that would only uglify it slightly. I actually really dislike the shape of Roo's baritone as well but the woods look gorgeous.

The only "pointy" guitar I like is the Carvin V220, but since I cut my hair and look fairly respectable (read: ordinary) now, it doesn't seem right for me to play a flamboyant guitar. For the longest time I hated everything about strats with a passion. Now I realized it's mostly the sound and bulky bolt-on neck heal I dislike, not the appearance. Maybe it comes from watching Yngwie, but I actually like the way it looks. I like some superstrats, but really pointy ones like the RG look too... impersonal... for me. Especially with a floyd rose.

Good call. Everytime I see those indie/surf/grunge jaguar, jazzmaster, tornado guitars I'm reminded how awful they are. But it isn't just the shape, it's the trem, the pickguard, the choices of colour, the type and position of knobs and switches. It's just alround a really bad design. It's the guitar equivalent of this:

I've never wanted to own one - I don't think I'd get on with the "quirky" hardware and switching - but I think they look great.

+1

Best looking guitars out there in my book !    Necks too small for me though.   :(

I love the jazzmaster, jaguar and mustang. Though the jazz has a full sized 25.5" scale neck.

Your LP looks cool Zak, just stop it, ok?

Indeed, I imagine it's quite difficult to play when you've already died of shame.

It also looks like the back leg of a very skinny, very dead animal... a bit Damien Hirst, maybe?
