Title: The Les Paul I've been waiting for is coming...
Post by: Twinfan on July 05, 2009, 03:28:00 PM
...the aged and signed Pearly Gates replica  :o

A snip at £12,699 - completely and utterly mental.  I bet they sell all 50 no problem though

http://www.coda-music.com/product_info.php?products_id=5837&oscsid=ad4235575019dfb23bba202a66750edb

50 more aged ones without signature are only £7499

http://www.coda-music.com/product_info.php?products_id=5838&oscsid=ad4235575019dfb23bba202a66750edb

And the VOS version is £5499....

I'd LOVE one of them as Pearly is my favourite 'burst.  One for the seriously well heeled collector only though.  Ah well.

He'd probably have "50 available" too!

I'm afraid these all fall into the "just another LP" category for me.

Hmmm, just wondering... when they try to duplicate a particular LP like this, do you think they spend ages trying to find  maple tops with figuring that closely resembles the original?  It's much more of an issue than it is with something like the EVH Frankenstein or even an alder Strat.

I believe they've replicated the 'burst pattern of Pearly, and here's an actual guitar that someone in the US bought recently which, while not identical, looks pretty darn good to me!

Pearly replica:

The original, plus Gibson's colour match reference:

All that money and you'll need a setup if you get one of the first lot set up with 8's

They look seriously nice though - if I had the cash, I'd have one no problem.  Problem is, at even 10% of that price I'd struggle at the minute.

I do think the pricing is somewhat insane.

Mind you, don't Gibson charge around 10K for one of their 'Masterbuild' guitars?

It's just your typical Gibbo marketing scam.

It's probably a piece of cr@p and only sold to lawyers and executives that don't even know how to play.

these things are really mental...
i'm with philly, it's just another les paul.
they're my favourite guitars, but gibson has one of the worst company policies around...
they're shifting a lot of resources from actual instrument building and developing to absurd collectables...

Oh, well that's totally okay then!

To be fair, as daft as it is, by professional instrument standards, nigh on ALL guitars are cheap.

You're average professional orchestral violinist would think it quite miserly to perform with a £13,000 instrument.

Of course, they couldn't buy just as good a violin for a tenth of the price, which we can with guitars.

Good quality mahogany + non-weight relieved = perfectly acceptable
My 2002 '59 is a miserly 8 and a quarter pounds with no weight relief or chambering

Yes I'm very curious about that. Surely it must have been standard construction solid mahogany/maple top?

I think Ratrod's saying the quality of the mahogany today isn't what it was in the 50s.....
Title: Re: The Les Paul I've been waiting for is coming...

It's very pretty, but would it come with .008s strung over the tailpiece? Wouldn't that be extremely sloppy tension then? Wonder how much height the action would need to be buzz free ...

Yes, I seriously doubt they used a similar mahogany as the original.

The potential buyers won't notice the difference anyway, cause they're not players.

Also, the original has old wood. That's magic!

Who knows if they're players or not?  You can be rich and still be a player (whatever the $%&# that means).

But yeah, of course only "real" (non-rich) players would notice the difference, because they've all got loads of experience playing '50s Gibsons, haven't they....

OK, so it probably isn't made out of exactly the same type of mahogany as the original (I thought it wasn't available any more anyway?).   And of course it can't magically be made to perform as if it's already 50 years old.  Doesn't mean Gibson haven't done everything in their power to make these guitars as good as they possibly can, even though they are ridiculously overpriced.

Post by: WezV on July 07, 2009, 06:41:45 PM
you can get just as good wood now as you could in the 50's - there just happens to be a hell of a lot less of it.  (maybe you shouldnt bother anyway, but thats another debate)

i would hope that gibson have gone for as close to the original in weight, looks (and even tone) as they possibly could.  they seem to have spent some time picking maple tops that have a similar figure to the original so it would be nice to see how the backs compare to the originals as well

Still, for that amount of cash i would rather have an original 60's goldtop or custom BB. Some rather tasty samples of those (mostly '68/'69 first reissued goldtops) are still up for grabs around the 10k in euro's over here in holland.

Undoubtably good zoo's (players or not) will be a very solid investment apart from being the 'holy grail' of gibsonism, which is still the question with the late reissues.

And oh yeah.... solid backs RULE!!!!!!!!!! PDT_045

If the Jimmy Page models are anything to go by, the signed Pearlys will be worth an absolute mint in the future - far more than a 60s Goldtop.

As a long term investment, I'd look elsewhere. Short-term, you are likely right.

Vintage guitar collectors and buyers are pretty much confined to a certain demographic (the baby boom generation.) As that generation ages, they or their children will sell and not buy.

I love vintage guitars, but nobody my age cares about Duane Allman or Billy Gibbons.

(Quote from Dean Forum) haha i cant believe somebody posted the pearly, i hate to say it but i bought one yesterday, it was the vos version. i didnt pay 11k for it either but it was still expensive at the 7k i paid. im not a gibbons fan but i am a les paul fan and after playing this guitar i loved it and thought it was awsome, im not sure if it even matters that i dont like zz top but at least you guys know it must have been a great guitar for a non fan to buy, i know most of you guys will think im crazy and i can totally understand, im picky about guitars and i cant find anything to complain about on this guitar and it should be for the price. i compared it with my 2004 R9 and i think its a better sounding guitar, theres been a few changes since i bought my other R9 with the nylon nut, bridge and saddles are different and the tone pots and wiring, the neck feels awsome too. i dont think anybody on the board is really into gibson historics but they are nice guitars and much better than any of the non custom shop guitars i owned for years. im not really one to waste money and buy something that i cant justify. (end)

The guys got some absolute guitar/car porn in his life... LUCKY LUCKY B@STARD

I'm just wondering how old you are?  With your interest in vintage Fenders etc I assumed you were "mature"?

I can fully accept that most young people aren't particularly interested in Duane Allman or Billy Gibbons - 1973 is ancient history to an 18-year-old.  I'm aware of The Tornados and Johnny Burnette and the Rock and Roll Trio, but I can't say I feel much connection with them.  And looking in the other direction, I don't know the bands young'uns listen to so why should they know the bands I listen to?  Great if they do, but times change.

But isn't that statement about vintage guitar collectors/enthusiasts a bit contradictory?  If they're "pretty much confined" to the baby boom generation, you must be the exception that proves the rule.  And who are they going to sell to if the collectors are rapidly dying out?

I am 38. In 2009, 38 is not a kid, but not the boomer generation either.

But the fact that my love of vintage Fenders makes people assume I am older sort of proves the point.

Anyway, to whom will the vintage collectors sell to when their current market is out of the market? Probably they will sell to anyone who is willing to buy, at whatever price the market will support. Just like the crack about TwinFan buying a Pearly for UKP 7000 in 30 years: why, when he will be able to get one much cheaper (at least in inflation-adjusted terms.)

In the US, before the Beatles hit, accordion was a very popular instrument. After the British Invasion, you could not give an accordion away at gunpoint to a teenager. The decline probably will not be that catastrophic.

Ahhh, 38's pretty ancient, I thought you were going to say 25 or something!

I'm "only" 7 years older than you and a lot of my favourite music is from the early '70s.

Lulz. That better?

Anyway, some of the music I like might have been old-fashioned to my grandparents. Some of it scares the wife away or makes her ask if the stereo is broken.

Anyway, not many people younger than us play guitar, and those who do typically don't make as big a fetish out of vintage instruments as I might.

Prawnik and I are the same age and most of the music I like is from the 60s  :)

I'm 21 and almost all my favourite music is from the 60s. In fact, Duane and Billy are some of my favourite guitarists too.

Careful Dave - guitarvillage are getting ready to get quite a few Pearly Gates in stock. From their website it looks like they will be stocking all 3 versions  :o

I saw that mate, I saw it.  I won't be buying one, but I'd love to check one out.

None will be as good as this one though - a guy in the US has VOS #99.  Can you GET any closer to Pearly???  :o

You'd have thought they could supply a toggle switch cap for 8 trillion dollars or whatever it costs.  :P

That one's a VOS, so over here it's £5499.  Exepensive, but what a looker!

Very nice indeed. My offer still stands if I win the lottery - I got one number on Saturday so I'm hopeful my time is about to come!

Just found this old thread - seems like I'd been GAS-ing for SIX months, not 3.

I resisted as long as I could, and that's a LIFETIME for me!!!!

I won't be buying one, but I'd love to check one out.

Dave, you crack me up bud! Come on then, spill the beans and lets see some pics and a review. I'm sure it must be awesome as it has to compare to some top jolly guitars.  8)

I guess the big thing about this is that you'll always get your investment back when you come to sell. And if you like it in the meantime (personally I think it's utterly hideous, but there you go) then that's effectively owning a guitar for free.

As much as I'd love to go to feline or legra with £5500 and get two or three unsurpassable guitars built, I'd probably have to keep them. Wait, that was meant to be a problem, wasn't it? Hmm.

Just whatever you do don't break it!

I know that feeling well! Reminds me of when I said of the CS Esquire "it's a keeper, I'm not going to sell it". And then a few months later it had been sold.  :)
