Title: Show Some Love For Hair Metal
Post by: Afghan Dave on July 10, 2009, 02:33:09 AM
I know there are a few older sorts like myself on this board who remember a time when the mention of - Sunset Strip, Gazzari's, and the Rainbow Bar & Grill - were almost magical places to read about for a British teenager with a shaggy perm.... Ahh memories...  PDT_013

But the love that dare not speak its name for the last decade + is OK again and I think it's time to Skool some of the younger folk on this board in the ways of Pointy Guitars - Great Choruses - Big Hair & Hot Women

The is much more to life than "teh Brootalz" and now that Spotify exists you deserve to know about it and listen for free. PDT_008

So listen to some of these bands (guitarists), have a shower and shampoo your hair, grab your guitar and find a HOT girl....

Life will be good...

Cinderella (Tom Keifer)
Hardline (Schon)
Danger Danger (Andy Timmons)
Ratt (Demartini)
Faster Pussycat (errr... nevermind)
Great White (Mark Kendall)
Warrant  (err.. yeah... well)

Pitch in with your old favourites and lets enjoy some "Summer Nights".... PDT_015

Had a big 80s metal fest on youtube last night, just drinkin some beers with my mates watching some awesome tunes. not all hair metal so to speak, but still choice, now got a lot of choruses stuck in my head

standout tunes from the night that i recall:
skid row
ratt
helix (gimme an R)
W.A.S.P
queensryche
a lot of judas priest
venom
Grim reaper
crimson glory (midnight RIP)
dokken
twisted sister
then slowly degenerating into a drunken haze of yelling,
my girlfriend turned up with a friend and tried playing rubbish like beyonce, thats when we had to up the stakes and went through a series of songs all about rock and rocking and us yelling along to choruses.

all up, was a pretty decent thursday night

My mate's band supported Love/Hate when they did a NYE gig at the Marquee in London sometime in the early 90s. Nice bunch of guys, guitarist was bit touchy about people looking at his rack though. He even put tape around it to stop people going near, made me laugh. I can't remember their set as I think I was out of it by then...

I love hair metal. :D Although I'm technically old enough (well, for the later stuff, anyway), I missed it the first time round as I have no older brothers or sisters and only really got into rock in my early teens (by which stage hair metal had been killed off :( ), but I've been making up for lost time since.

This thread reads like my cd collection. Sadly though I used to have hair down past my backside I used wash and go, and it washed and went  :(.

Damn you hereditary baldness!

For those in the same boat, just remember the old saying "It's not a bald spot, it's a solar panel for a sexmachine!"

Some of these aren't exactly hair metal (IMO) but they're brilliant:

Dokken - Under Lock And Key and Back For The Attack
White Lion - Pride
Enuff Z'Nuff - Strength
Ratt - Out Of The Cellar and Invasion of Your Privacy
Tesla - The Great Radio Controversy
Badlands - Badlands
Love/Hate - Blackout In The Red Room
Black 'n Blue - Black 'n Blue
Mötley Crüe - Girls, Girls, Girls
Cinderella - Night Songs
Saigon Kick - Saigon Kick and The Lizard
Skid Row - Slave To The Grind
Babylon AD - Babylon AD
Stevie Salas Colorcode - Stevie Salas Colorcode
Saraya - Saraya and When The Blackbird Sings

Just for Afghan Dave  :P :

I turned 16 in 1981 and my previous taste in bands had been Queen, Kiss, T Rex, Slade, Bowie (and Whitesnake, UFO, Deep Purple, Fleetwood Mac) etc and My friend bought Motley's Too Fast For love on the indie Leathur label and OMG - for the next 10 years I was a Sunset Strip addict, and other bands that followed in the wake of that scene

The original mix of Too fast for Love is way better than the remix on Electra by Roy Thomas Baker
Get a copy of Music to Crash Your Car To  to hear it in it's proper form - freaking awesome!

From there I got into Ratt, Dokken, Black N Blue, Great White, Teeze, WASP, (Van Halen), Warrant,King Kobra, Sweet Savage, Poison, Bulletboys, Bon Jovi, Skid Row, Cinderella, Britney Fox, Guns N Roses, LA Guns, Faster Pussycat, Extreme, Vixen, Cheap Trick, Kix etc etc.

There was a ton of great music from thse "glam" bands.
Sadly the record labels got lazy and were signing anything with eyeliner and hairspray and consequently the scene got stale  and in the end many were glad for the change of scene that grunge brought in.

Whilst I admired some bands like Nirvana, Peral Jam and Soundgarden I resented and loathed  that they spelt the death knell for the bands I loved and I hated the serious crimes against fashion that grunge and later Nu Metal brought in.
Life has been perfect and peachy with girls in skimpy tops, short skirts , fishnest , high heels or cowboy boots.
Suddenly they were in Doc Martens, and lumberjack shirts with wallet chains

And guys too.

I completely agree with what you're saying though.

It was also cool that you had an extra approach line with those girls, 'cos you could ask them for makeup advice and get them to do your hair, etc.  ;)

I have no memory of the 80s and yet I couldn't agree more. Bunch of Dimebags.

I realize I am late in this thread but I want to show my appreciation for my favourite rock album: Whitesnake's Slip of the Tongue. Everybody seem to ignore that one because of the success of 1987 but Slip really took it to the next level with better songs, Coverdale's best recorded vocals and the excellent arrangements and solos provided by Steve Vai. This is (to me at least) the kind of rock album that will never come about again.

Oh... and... I also like... Winger. Quite a lot.

Well Danger Danger are badly underrepresented on Spotify (only the first Album)

The best songs and playing start on the second album "Screw It"

Then it's pretty consistently good albums such as "c--kroach" or "Gildersleves"

Here is a youtube clip of Andy + D2 Playing like a F**kin MONSTER in Japan.....

ahh yeah, thats the one - some great footage.  Metallica in the Justice era were just phenominal - I was considered too young at 14 to see 'tallica at Newcastle City Hall (and Slayer on SOH tour too) :0(  I didn't let up though and got the see Anthrax not long after on the State f Euphoria tour :0)

i'll just do the resurrection shuffle on this thread :)

i'm gone for a couple of weeks and that's when you all confess your '80's rock love!  i knew about Feline and Dave, but the rest of you too?  great!  i only arrived near the end of it all, Def Leppard's Hysteria was my first album, closely followed by Appetite For Destruction and then WASP's Headless Children.  after that it all went a bit hairspray and glitter :)  i love Tigertailz, The Dogs D'Amour, Skid Row etc, but two of my all time favourite bands are Love/Hate and Great White.  i know, Great White were sanitised and nice while Love/Hate were a bunch of headcases, but i loved 'em both, and was lucky enough to see them both live.  i saw Britny Fox too, but we won't go into that...

and today i got tickets to see Tigertailz on their first irish show! it's in Ahoghil, which is very surreal, but i'm looking forward to it  8)

MArk Kendall is so tasteful and JAck Russell  has a great voice

Dave: i've never been there either, but yeah, i can imagine tourists trying to ask for directions to it! :)

Feline:  yeah, when i saw them live i just watched Kendall all night!  and Jack Russell may have a daft name, but he's a hell of a singer.  i managed to get all their early albums by mail order through a tiny ad in the back of Kerrang!, in the days before the internet.  their more recent Led Zep cover album is good fun, although maybe a bit too accurate

i actually had an unlabelled cassette copy of a Kingdom Come album and thought it was Great White for years!  Lenny Wolf's voice is very similar
