http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1204359/In-week-Harriet-Harman-takes-charge-feminist-initiative.html
how exactly is this a 'feminist initiative'?
damn those feminists, how dare they try and tell us wifebeating is wrong!
who reads this cr@p? (other than anyone who clicks on the link, obviously ;) )
-
Who reads it? Pig ignorant, scaremongered jingoists, mostly.
-
I do read the mail, but to be honest HH is an idiot whichever side you look at it from.
I think there should be a masculinist group :D
Anyway, I would welcome a woman into my workplace, if they want to have more than equal rights then they would really have to prove it by working in ALL walks of life, not just city / office work, they can't play the 'I'm a woman, I can't do that' card later down the line after using equal opportunities laws to get into the job that they clearly aren't qualified for.
And I do recall it to be proven that women have less spacial awareness (ie parking / driving) than men due to evolution of males' brains, so does that mean that its not sexist because it is a fact.
-
It's true that (as a MASSIVE generalisation) that men have better spacial awareness than women, and can process images they're looking at backwards or upside down better than women (hence better reverse parking and the like) but I don;t really see the point you striving to grab hold of
-
lol they have a pic of a guy about to hit a girl. Without the photo, I would have no idea what 'wife beating' is

Remember that "Spousal Abuse" (posh name for domestic violence) goes both ways and isnt always limited to physical violence.
Often more damage is done verbally than a punch or slap will ever inflict.
But the Daily Mail is only there to make your blood boil
I recommend the Daily Mash:
http://www.thedailymash.co.uk/politics/politics-headlines/harman's-husband-urged-to-shag-her-200908051955/ (http://www.thedailymash.co.uk/politics/politics-headlines/harman's-husband-urged-to-shag-her-200908051955/)
-
good old daily mail, perfect example of how people look for evidence to rationalise their beliefs but tend not to look for evidence that disproves what they believe in
hence the existence of conspiracy theorists and daily mail readers
-
Fair point re "spousal abuse".
The Mail is a hateful piece of trash. Unfortunately it's popular and like all popular media it informs a great many ignorant opinions.
People seem to be very confused these days about feminism, equality of opportunity, and political correctness. Treating people equality doesn't mean treating people the same.
I seem to remember that certain circles called The Spice Girls a feminist movement...

I don't think I was trying to make a point, just throwing a few things in there.
more seriously...there are a few differences between male and females which have come from evolution, it needs to be accepted that there is a difference somewhere.
Has HH addressed the issue of the women that want to fight for our country on the front line? IIRC They don't go in as an invasion force (happy to be corrected, too lazy to find out :P )
Whilst I believe the glass ceiling principle to be quite serious, I don't think it can be used as an excuse.
Now thats the point I am making, I attribute no evidence to it, just rambling
but theres my point ;)
-
i'm struggling to think up a decent reply. suffice to say, i don't agree with the mail, especially on this issue. EDIT: i don't really see what their point is about the violence against men thing. I mean, any teacher i ever had told us not to fight or hit other people, they're doing that already presumably. the big problem with the mail, more so than the politics, is that it's sensationalist- it knows it'll sell more papers if it sounds annoyed and gets other people annoyed, regardless of whether it actually agrees with getting annoyed, kind of thing.
-
I am also missing the point! Just a Harman rant, she pisses me off.
All newspapers are bullshitee to be honest, there is always a bias and lack of straight facts.
The Mail does seem to be the worst for fear mongering, but most newspapers / news broadcasts require you to read your way around the perspective of the journalist.
-
of course, i'm not suggesting that the mail is the only biased paper, just it seems to be particularly bad. the guardian pisses me off plenty too, and it's from the opposite end of the spectrum.
I hate harman too (heck, most if not all politicians), but it's one thing to hate a single person, quite another to use that to blame all women or suggest that feminism sucks.
-
I think Andrew Marr once said "News is what the consensus of journalists determines it to be"
Got us to talk about the story anyway, so at least its making people think even if they are trying to think about how much they disagree with the article ;)

Separately, Dr Linda Papadopoulous [sic] is carrying out a 'fact-finding review of the sexualisation of girls and links to violence'. All will report back later this year, and lead to the publication of an action plan.
Ah, Dr. Linda Papadopoulos, the media-friendly face of popular psychology.
I love it when she's on the news talking about the pressures young women face over unattainable "body images". Because she must know all about what that's like.

Actually maybe I should move this to "Crushes".

Absolutely agree Philly...
TV Producers can't wait to put the sexy little Dr P on the box.
The idea that she is the "first call" psychology expert based primarily on her professional expertise does tend to ring hollow. :?

It used to be Dr. Raj Persaud, didn't it?
I'm not really complaining about Dr. Linda though....

That was until he got caught plagiarising someone else's work!
Now if I caught Dr Linda being a very naughty little girl, I might have to give her a gentle spanking to get her back into line... Mmm
Spinal Tap got it right.... Yeah misogyny rules!
You been bad
Don't do what I say.
You don't listen.
And you never obey.
Try to teach you.
But you just won't be good.
You won't behave the way
A big girl should.
It's time to give the whip a crack.
I'm gonna have to send you back to
Bitch School.
Bitch School.
You're a beauty.
You're the best of your breed.
You're a handful.
And I know what you need.
You need training.
Gonna bring you to heel.
I'm gonna break you with my will of steel.
Discipline's my middle name.
And no one comes back the same from
Bitch School.
Bitch School.
No more sniffling strangers, or running free at night.
You think my bark's bad, honey - wait till you feel my bite.
You got problems.
You whine and you beg.
When I'm busy,
You wanna dance with my leg.
I'm gonna chain you.
Make you sleep out of doors.
You're so fetching when you're down on all fours.
And when you hear your master,
You will come a little faster, thanks to
Bitch School.

Harman's crazed rants do absolutely nothing for feminism. her notion seems to be that women should get certain jobs whether they're qualified or not just because they're women. that in itself is discrimination!
we recently interviewed for a new engineer, most of the applicants were men, there were two women. as it happens, one of the women got the job. not because she's female, because she was the best one for the job. any legislation saying you HAD to employ a one or the other sex to fulfill a quota would be ridiculous and wrong.

+1
& I fail to see why teaching that hitting girls is wrong requires an "initiative". I remember quite clearly being taught at primary school that hitting girls is wrong.
Or perhaps we've just come full circle & at some point in the 30 years since I left primary school, someone had decided that teaching people not to hit girls was discriminatory?
-
also want to voice my strong dislike of 'The Daily Mail' - its the worst of the bunch!
-
Spinal Tap got it right.... Yeah misogyny rules!
theres some classic misogynistic hard rock out there. 'Don't Talk to Strangers' still cracks me up:
"Don't dream of women... they'll only bring you....
DOWN!!!"

(this now looks like I'm a horrible sexist bigot, which is far from the case by the way)

this is what i was really focused on!
teaching children about domestic violence and hopefully the happy oppsoite of that makes sense to me. i realise its all a bit 'nanny state' and trying to take a job away from the family but i honestly believe there are a large number of families that simply dont know how to teach children these basic lessons... mind you, there are very few teachers that will be able to do it well either, letes leave it upto the teletubbies instead ;)
this is not a feminist issue, but the daily mail decide to put that label on it and manage to at best miss, at worst completely undermine the whole point
issues of an allready bloated curriculum aside. schools already teach basic sex education at this age, does it not make sense to teach a bit more about basic human relationships at the same time!

oh, and erm, +1 on linda popadopadopadopadlus

quota's are terrible.

they teaching anything about STDs yet?
I'm 25 now and all they ever taught me how sex works in primary and then sex and a bit about protection in high school, didn't tell us anything about STDs which ones are out there, which ones they can cure, etc
had 1 lesson about being a parent it was so good half the girls from my school are single mums now
I remember more from the PSE lessons on world population...

That is HARSH... :o
(but bloody funny in a totally distressing way) :?

Newspapers? I refuse to read any of them. I have a friend who rants about the "fascist" Mail and then goes back to his ever so balanced Guardian.
AS for the subject matter-Ms Harman is not one of my favourites I must admit and her recent outpourings do not endear her to me. Surely the message should be that hitting anyone is wrong regardless of gender.
-

Indeed. Regardless of gender of both hitter and hit.

I'm 31 and they taught me more than I really wanted to know about STDs. Mind you clearly that wasn't everything, as I learned at work last week that you can catch hepatitis A from rimming ! :euuuh:
However, one thing I've always felt was that sex education at school never placed any emphasis on relationships. All these groups who go on about it being "the role of the family" really annoy me, as they're filled with exactly the kind of people who appear to be incapable of having a mature, sensible discussion with their kids about sex, relationships, drugs etc.

Good lord, what decent people have to do to make a living in this recession brings tears to my eyes... :(

ROFLMAO
I was stood outside the early pregnancy unit while my colleague was handing over a patient, and I was reading some of their advice booklets.

of course, i agree. the big problem is that an awful lot of firms, if said legislation doesn't exist, will use that as an excuse to employ a man instead of a (better, or equally qualified) woman.
LOL at philly's post about the psychologist, too.
