Warning Tele AND relic content
I've been wanting an oddball Esquire for a while now - the constant Tele gassing here doesn't help.
I've just won this body http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=390081624398&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
as well as these:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=390081280882&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

and ordered some hardware from Glendale

The guy Mark Jenny who did the body is really really helpfull and kind - I'm getting the stuff sent to him and he's going to fit all the parts for me for free because I used B.I.N
So, I'm gonna need a neck and a pup.
Wez is fully booked untill xmas and I don't fancy a long wait time. I'll give Feline and Legra a bell incase they aren't choca but I suspect they will be. Any ideas? I could go warmoth I spose. Satin finish, flat radius shredder neck etc.
And I'm gonna need the nastiest most brutal.... tele pickup  Piledriver is an option, how does it do with highgain?
Thoughts (not Roos) are apreciated 8)
-
Blimey, that was fast work!
I haven't seen this chap Matt Jenny's stuff on eBay before, interesting....
If you don't mind the Standard Thin neck shape, there should be plenty of choice in the Warmoth showcase. The other shapes are there, but a bit thinner on the ground.
Or there's USACG etc.
Question: given the bridge you've chosen, are you going for a direct-mounted pickup?
-
A quick google shows he's got quite a following, his stuff is meant to be really good, I hope that's right anyway
He does the bodies for Glendales Teles and they cost around $3k
Yea, it's going to be direct mount. I'll have the 3 way for looks but only working in one position and have a killswitch :p
-
That body looks great, love Sonic Blue 8)
-
Ah bollox, ordered the neck from Warmoth
Reverse Tele headstock
Maple neck, maple fretboard
42.8 mm nut width
Standard thin profile
6105 frets - stainless steel
22 frets
11.5" Radius
No Inlays
Black TUSQ XL nut
Clear Satin finish
25.5"
-
Shaping up to be very nice!
-
Here's a mock-up.
I'll be sending the bits to Feline to set-up.
-
Very nice but looking at the mock up - I think if I would go reverse on a Tele, I would have gone for a reverse Strat headstock - possibly a large strat headstock!
I dunno what's come over me but I'm really thinking I would love that!? :?

Presumably that's a custom order then? I've never seen an 11.5" radius in the showcase (or anywhere else for that matter!)
I would go custom, but I like the '59 Roundback profile and I really resent paying $35 extra when it's no extra cost in the showcase! :x
-
the idea i got was 25" scale and 24 frets - it made a lot of sense to compromise on that!! - as a scratch build it could work but not as a parts project
it all looks very, very nice
i think i am also being sucked into the forum mass consciousness tele love.... maybe thats why roo hasnt been around much, he started to feel it too - and felt dirty ;)
-
I'm not sure about the reverse tele headstock and the small bridge, but if you like go for it!!!!
Beside it sounds very nice! I like Esquire, has that direct-almost-punk approach that I really enjoy!
I haven't played for a while, but as ar as remember it was easy to get a Motörhead tone with the Piledriver, direct with the amp (Plexi)... I imagine with high gain amp or some booster or distortion pedal you can get really brutal, like this video:

Yea, it will take a little while to make it as it was custom (8-10 wks) but may as wait and get exactly what I want. I got the 11.5 radius 'cause that's really close to my Vigiers.
Including shipping it cost me 230. Considering it has SS frets, a finish and a nut I reckon that's pretty good. Although, I had to pay a $25 up-charge because I didn't want the neck butt pre drilled, seems a bit backwards to me!

Yea, USACG would do that spec but it would come to just over $500!! So I compromised!
I've never used Glendale hardware before, hope it lives up to the hype.

Anyone used http://www.thedecalshop.co.uk/ ?
What a terribly uninformative website... I'd be interested but it doesn't really tell you anything or offer prices ect. Annoying...
-
uninformative for a reason, the old version had many reproduction decals on it and i think it got them in trouble.
I had a decal or two from them and they were pretty good, although i am currently ordering from glen ellard instead and getting very good service - and interesting conversations too!
-
Mind sharing the link?

no website but send him an email at artyfarty1@blueyonder.co.uk and tell him what you want

Thanks 8)

Including shipping it cost me 230.
There is something weird here... I was looking on W site and for my count only the neck with finish (without SS frets, shipping, nut and the streight radius) would be US$232 :?

Dollars and pounds, Fernando!
I used the Custom Neck Builder (how sad are we! ) and got $332, including frets, nut, radius and finish. Shipping to the UK is about $50. So that's $382, depending on the exchange rate = £230-£240. :)
Then there'll be another 50 quid (approx) to pay to UPS when they deliver.

I can recommend Glen as well, I have had lots of decals from him (all my Warmoth and other self made guitars have his "Fecker" decals on them. He supplied the "Less Pull" on the Wez Junior build too.
-
Excellent. I just need to come up with something funny, witty, unique and personal... maybe I'll leave it blank :p
-

Difficult, isn't it?! I've spent ages trying to think of something personal that looks a bit like "Fender"... but nothing so far.
-
Excellent. I just need to come up with something funny, witty, unique and personal... maybe I'll leave it blank :p
Extremely obvious but you could go for Lewcaster.
-
I like the Lewcaster idea
-
How about Funder Philly?
-
Yea, a decal is going to take some thought!
I'm struggling on what SC size pickup to use but I guess there's no reason I couldn't just get it routed and drop a bucker in it

How about Funder Philly?
No, I have no funds. Or fun.
Unless it's Funder in a Luke Morley/Danny Bowes kind of way?
I may go with Fiendish, although it doesn't really look much like Fender.

Have you seen Dave's CS tele Philly? Not quite as obvious a sparkle but still sparkly - I like it!

Not in the flesh, Ian, but the pics of course.
It's not the sparkle that's wrong though - that's oh so right! - it's the Floyd and reverse headstock. But I like 'em! :D
-
Philly... I'm shocked... you like a reverse headstock and a floyd?
Next you'll be clad in spandex, playing along to Steel Panther.

:x Oh good lord above, me in spandex? I think the only people in the history of the world who looked worse in spandex than I would were were Steve Grimmett and Nick Bowcott out of Grim Reaper.
(And you know I couldn't play along to Steel Panther, even if I wanted to)
-
All ordered. Just the hard wait now!

:D great!

Another vote for Glen. I have used him for years.

i just got another batch from him this morning, gonna dust a coat of paint on this in a second

looks great! nifty headstock too 8)

should go well with the satin chrome tuners i have for it too!!
-
I think black would look good too

the body is blue and i want satin chrome on that

Blue? Not baby blue?

of course not - its bluey green burl maple

-
:o Damn! That Tele again!!!!
-
yeah, yeah... nearly done now!!
-
of course not - its bluey green burl maple
:o Have we seen that one before with the finish on?
I don't think I liked the look of it unfinished (if I remember right), but the blue looks great!
-
yeah, its been a slow burner for a long time - but nearly done now!!
its the solid macasser ebony neck that slowed me down
-
A-HA! That's why it has that gorgeous figuring!
Hard to work?
-
Fair play, strings direct are good. I ordered some black sperzels yesterday at 3pm and they said it may take a while to get them in stock, they came today with no postage costs and they were already cheaper than everywhere else.
Tele looks good, needs a Floyd though :p
Made a couple of changes to the neck order too. Changed the radius to 16" and upgraded to the 'Earvana Precut and Installed Compensating Nut' in 'Graph Tech Black TUSQ XL'.
I avoided it at first glance because I thought it was the retro fitted which I think looks well ugly but it's not the retro fit.
It looks really wide and has the notches like the newer Ernieball Musicman, same nut size as an lsr apparantly.
wtf is the plural of Musicman? Musicmens Musicmans Musicmani?

Bloody hell! How quick was that? :o
-
Still got the neck and electrics to go
-
Did you have to pay a load of VAT etc on the Glendale order?
-
It's not arrived yet, the pics were sent to me from Mark Jenny (the body guy) in the USA. I had the Glendale stuff sent to him and he'll send it all as one package to me as a gift. So, fingers crossed I'll avoid fees - thats always worked on Tele bodies in the past. But If I do have to pay at least it'll be on the one box.
-
:D great!
-
I decided to go with USACG for the neck in the end, I read so many positive things about them. They were really really good on the phone explaining the pros and cons of every little detail and making sure everything was right, it
ll only take them 3-4 weeks as well. mmmm graphite rods!
Warmoth charged me a cancelling fee, ho hum... live and learn!
-
Hummm I always had good service from Warmoth... Think will try someday the USACG...
-
Warmoth are great if they have what you want in the Showcase. But I don't like doing a custom order that costs more than a Showcase item, when you don't know what it'll look like, or what it'll weigh etc.
I'm sure USACG are great too, but I really don't like their website and again you can't see what you're getting (although I heard they'll send photos?). There's no way of dealing with them except by phone, though, and I hate phones, I always get flustered and forget things!
-
Oooo I wasn't slagging off Warmoth. I am a bit peed off that they charged me $80 for cancelling an order that they hadn't started work on though.
The guy Rob spent a good half hour chatting to me. We went over every detail of it - he spent at least 10 mins discussing fret heights with me and the pros and cons of SS frets etc etc... I really felt like they appreciated the business.
oh and he didn't charge me extra for the SS frets after I moaned about Warmoth charging me 8)
-
they charged me $80 for cancelling an order that they hadn't started work on though.
wow! expensive...
Did it really haven't started? it was like a week ago you made the order :?
-
Well, it was no prob making an addition to the order on thursday because it hadn't been started. So I guess they could've started it late thursday - friday. Anyway I was aware I may have to pay up if I canceled so it's my own fault! I wonder if it'll turn up in the showcase cheap :p
-
-
I wonder if it'll turn up in the showcase cheap :p
Could you back and quickly change the spec to '59 Roundback, vintage modern, quartersawn maple and ebony board? Maybe they'll still feel they have to sell it cheap!

Lookin' good! You've probably mentioned it already, but which DiMarzio model is that?
-
Chopper T. I was really close to going for the Piledriver but I really can't be dealing with hum. The only issue is the pickup is sitting on the cable stopping it from being flat in the route. So, I guess a little wood will have to be removed.
-
"real men" always have hum coming out of their geetars
It's looking very tasty there Lew, I'm gonna have to go back and reread the thread now to remind myself what the hell's going on
-
Update! The neck arrived a while ago and they sent it with a strat heel  ... PDT_029
Been a few changes - I've got a Gotoh Floyd and Tremel-No in the post for it. Neck's going to be Maple/Ebony now too
Anyone selling a 'bucker?
-
Maple? You used rosewood on Kisekae :?
Have you ordered the neck with tele heel?
-
Ye cba to make another mockup, the new neck will be a perfect fit 8)
I did order the original neck with a tele heal but usacg made a booboo
-
Blimey, that's changed quite a bit! Are you routing the body for the Floyd yourself?
-
Cool stuff Lew, I love my super Tele with the floyd... quite simply the best best guitar I've ever played! Looking forward to seeing the finished guitar. What type of bucker you thinking? Vintage or hot? Covered or open?
-
Blimey, that's changed quite a bit! Are you routing the body for the Floyd yourself?
God no. All the actual work is getting done by someone who knows what they're doing! 8)

Yep, your Wayne has been a bit of inspiration! I'm not sure on the 'bucker, I made a thread in pickups. I'm quite tempted to go for something like a Duncan Custom Custom, I had one in a Briggs and it was great - but I'm not really sure what would work with Alder/Maple/Ebony. Relic nickel cover I reckon.
I just sent my idea for the headstock off, hope it can be done! Similar to a Firebird but with an Ebony overlay, except for a small slither/step which should stay maple (like a wider version of the Hamer Californian headstock).
Need to come up with a simple logo idea though, that's the hard part :?
-
I hope they can sort the headstock for you. The colour you've got looks ace .... one of my favorites. The only spare F spaced pick upI've got is a custom shop S.D, but you can't fit a cover 'coz it's a parallel axis type. Not sure what's going top work with that combination of woods? At least with C.C you could swap mags to A5 or ceramic if it didn't quite fit.
-
Ordered a black battle worn Coldsweat with double rows. This Tele isn't going to look very country!
-
-
I'm looking forward to seeing how the CS sounds - I ordered it with twin screw coils and Tim says it'll make a big difference to the voicing, taming the high end.
-

Cool :) that's the spirit!

Sure you don't want to rethink the body and go for something like..... an RG, maybe?

haha I dig the hotrodded look!
It should be ready in a couple of months depending on how long a certain someone takes doing it :P
I still need to come up with a logo/name though, help! :/ It's going to be inlaid, not a decal.

That must of taken some severe routing Dave ;)
-
That is a pretty nice Tele! Glittery, red, floyd, humbucker, maple neck.
Good lord there is indeed a mess in my lower regions!
-
Somebody's posted that pic before - it's one of the only Floyd-equipped guitars that's ever given me GAS.
-
How about Bloodkaster.

Probably a bit too metal for an old fart like me :P

That's awful. Truly awful. My Tele would have a fit if it saw it's cousin dressed like that :(

Hey! Mine's gonna be the Esquire version of that so carefull what ya say  :P

Ah - sorry Lew

Blimey, I know that pickup's "battle worn", but it looks like it was Leatherface who did the battle-wearing!
I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out! :D
-
When I rang, I asked 'em to go hard on the top. Seems they listened! This is going to be an apocalyptic Tele.
-
Great to see it there, always cool to see something of mine in someone else's place (not being stolen that is, lol). Guess I'm just weird like that, lol
Is that pickguard already aged? Whats the body finished like? Cause I'd find it weird if it was slightly relic'd but it didn't feel like it, i.e. all shiny over the relic-y bits.
-

Everything on the guitar is aged by Mark Jenny - body/pick guard/ controlplate / strap button - screws. The bkp looks beaten, although not a traditional relic. The Gotoh isn't aged of-course butI'll throw a cup of tea on it or something. The body actually has a very matte dulled look to it in person.
If you look through the thread I posted some big pics of the guitar body, it's really subtle - loads of cracklines across the finish that don't show up in pics.
Other than the Gotoh, it will be the neck (maple/ebony) that may look out of place but as we're going for an oil finish it wont be long untill it looks the part(the back at least)!
EDIT: The auction is still up for some reason and that has good pics of the relicing.

i think it might be nice to have the different wear on different parts - it will look just like someone took a vintage tele and butchered it buggery with a complete lack of respect for the history.... awesome, especially since its not a real vintage tele its being done to ;)
-
Enjoying viewing this thread and seeing what you are doing with that tele body. Not what I would chose for a tele body but cool non the less. I look forward to seeing the finished article.
Goodluck with the rest of it

Always. I mean this Esquire project here is really good and all but can it ever really compare?
-
:D :P

rofl Dave
I actually sent Devries a message on Facebook for a laugh, asking him why I should get him to make me a guitar rather than Suhr. His reply was amusing to say the least

id like to read that!

Hiya, if I were to get a new guitar - Devries or Suhr or Vigier and why?
Devries Guitars Wheres Katie 10 August at 02:49 Report
ok..hows this...recently i was in a show down with an ESP $6000 custom guitar against my Immortal $1500 in a studio recently...both guitars had a similar lead sound but mine had a chunkyier rythym sound.I have heard about shur..apparasntly their biggest name is a player from whitesnake?
well one of the original players from whitesnake..Adrian vandenburg ordered one of my guitars...most of my clientes are professional and i have about 8 clients who all have had world wide number 1 hits over the years.
another thing that might interest you..was that a while ago penthouse ran a 6 page article on the most sought after guitars from both the players view and collectors view..they interviewed some of aus best and worlds best players..and my guitars were the only guitar from the modern era that made the list.If u have any questions just ask. Any Penthouse readers (Dave)? Did you actually see this article?
Here's a link to the proof - no way could he have fabricated that... :?

Hope Wez doesn't mind me showing these off (the routing wasn't finished on the body).

The headstock shape is frigggin awesome, the inside line marks the ebony overlay :o
-
looking good!
-
So it's going to have a Firebird headstock? This is the most unique Esquire ever.
-
I once dared think in a firebird neck on a strat or VIP body, but never on a Tele, congrats, that's a hard shot!
-
It's Wez's 'inspired by Firebird' headstock. I asked for a Firebird headstock with straight string pull and with the machine heads in the normal place rather than toward the center like a Firebird. Yep, it's gonna be unique! It's going to look wild with the ebony fb with no inlays
-
also, firebird headstocks are friggin huge!!!

i did some comaprisons for lew a little while back, firebird neck on tele body:

mine i still a bit bigger than a strat/tele but much more in proportion. only just fits though :)
some of you may notice the dark section at the front of the floyd route. The tele pickup route just extended into this area. not a structural issue but clearly it would have looked a bit daft so we did a full plug of that area before rerouting just to be thorough. that bits getting a bit more sonic blue at the moment
-
Awesome! Looking forward to see it finished!
-
Me too :p
-
Do you have an ETC? (estimate time completion)
-
when its done ;)
-
fun fun fun :o

I never tire of seeing that worktop...
I've just realised, this is the beast we're voting on the scratchplate for (the body, not the worktop, obviously)?
Nice looking hunk of wood - I can almost see myself leaning Fernando's usual way... (no pick guard).
-
fun fun fun :o

hmmmmmmm.....that guitar looks ripe for some a glitter or chrome finish :P
-
No you bloody can't

The neck joint on this thing is sick sick sick :o
