Pasta with spicy tomato sauce (home grown chilli, just the 1, was enough to spice enough sauce for 4 people... they seem to get hotter the longer they've been in the freezer!)

nothing good tonight - just half a pizza before heading to the burton beer festival

last saturday i had a 18 oz rib steak before heading out  for beer.  i think i am good at cooking steak but this thing was a beauty.  i was saving it for the evening but got invited to a poker game and had i for lunch just so i didnt have to share it later.

i am currenty enjoying cookinga simple bacony pasta with masses of cheese sauce and lots of onions and garlic.  its a cheap meal i can cook in 10 minutes and always seems rather indulgent - perfick

A risotto with spring greens, garlic, ricotta, basil and toasted pine nuts.  The whole process was assisted by a lot of red wine:  I was cooking Keith Floyd style tonight.

I went to Brasserie Blanc and had smoked ham hock terrine, followed by slow cooked beef with mashed potato and braised veg, and finished with a plum crumble with vanilla ice cream. All very yummy, and only £15 with wine!  :D

I am ashamed to say that Saturday was so busy that I had no time to cook and so unknown to Mrs 38th, I sneaked a bag of chips and told her I'd get something at the venue.

Last nite it was our standard saturday nite take-away from our local Indian restaurant- King Prawn Patia (Me), Butter Chicken (Her), Sag Bahjee, Pilau Rice, Garlic Nan... got into a discussion with a bloke in the restaurant while I was picking it up, couldn't convince him I wasn't actually James May, even to the extent of wanting autograph... the staff were p1ssing themselves. The last evidence in his (lager affected) mind was when my food arrived the moment I'd paid (we'd pre-ordered, obviously) - "nah guys, he must be celebrity, I been here an hour, and I only come in for a kebab, he walks in and you give im the red carpet..."

Today it's roast lamb :D

Yesterday I ate sandwiches made of calabreza sausage and cheese, I don't really know how you call this kind of sausage... It's one of the most asked pizzas here in Brazil... Haven't eat the english sausage, but it doesn't look nothing alike...

You should try EVERYTHING at least twice.... A good place to start would be one of the little £1 boxes you can get from M&S.... It's not propper sushi but close enough for a try.

If by bottle you mean those gay little el34 sized things of various spices in tescos et al, no. I dont roll like that. I have a huge bag of the stuff and put at least 2 of those bottles worth in.

I'm a purist with my spag bol (which is ironic as it's hardly a classic italian dish). If I want mince with chili I'll make chili, if I want chorizo I'll make spanish. Wez, try pancetta, a tablespoon of green pesto and half a tablespoon of sundried tomato paste, it'll give it a similar lift while still keeping the essential character of the dish.
Title: Re: What's for dinner?
Post by: WezV on September 24, 2009, 11:00:17 AM
i do vary it up depending whats in and how i am feeling, but i am not interested in authenticity or being true to the dish - just what works with my tastes!

i can say this, chorizo in a spag bol works very well for me
Title: Re: What's for dinner?
Post by: Sifu Ben on September 24, 2009, 11:33:28 AM
I just can't get my head round chorizo with mince  :?
Title: Re: What's for dinner?
Post by: WezV on September 24, 2009, 11:41:53 AM
i am talking about the little fat cooking ones rather than thin deli slices, that woudlnt work at all

there is no better smell than onions garlic and some cubes of chorizo gently frying away and just that over pasta is a great snack.  I also like bacon in a spag bol, but not at the same time.  smoked bacon gives you pork fat and a smokey taste.  Chorizo give you pork fat, a smokey taste and just a little extra spice and colour

edit:  i should also point out that my spag bols are not mince heavy, the main ingredient is tomatoes.  i hate it when its just mince and onions with some tomato juice or a jar of sauce stirred in  :?
Title: Re: What's for dinner?

Hhmm, new thread inspired
Yeah, maybe I'm just put off by failed experiments with pepperoni and salami. However, diced Chorizo is a lot denser than bacon.
Title: Re: What's for dinner?
Post by: WezV on September 24, 2009, 12:42:43 PM
it can be a little dense.  but if its fried slowly at the start it releases a hell of a lot of flavour into the sauce.  it still stays dense but those little cubes taste godly

pork chop the size of my face!! - i love ocado for that, they always have great meat - almost local butcher beating, but not quite.  certainly the best i have had from  major supermarket

it was done j'oliver style (hate to admit it but it works).  fry the chop for colour and chuck it in a roasting pan with loads of fresh toms, pepper, onions, garlic, balsamic and a few herbs. roast on  high heat till the veg makes a good mush

And it worked, bit of work to do on it yet, but it's a bloody good place to start from.  Think I'm going to add an egg next time to try and get more batter to stick on the chicken (also need to use finer salt).  Dead easy too.

Made about 3 metric buttloads of risotto last night, was real good. heaps of kransky and mushroom and salami in it then a whole lot of parmesan and balsamic vinegar on top of it.
the leftovers will be my dinner for the next few days i think.

Off to the Chinese tonight.  We had a good tradition around here of converting half of a pub into either a chinese or an indian and leaving the other half as a pub.

Chicken with Chilli and Salt and a few pints of Broadside - lovely.  Best Chinese I've ever been to.

Where is round here and what is the name of the Chinese?

There used to be one near(ish) me called Wok this Way.

The pub is called the Sharnford Arms in ...... errrr...... Sharnford, Leicestershire

Absolutely lovely.  I think we must have about 8 pubs with either a chinese or an indian within about a three mile radius.  It's hard having a pint and being able to smell curry, makes you well hungry.

Well done. I'd have just had Mars bars in the car.

I find the irrelevant theme of a food thread on a guitar website amusing.
So to ensure I stay on topic:
I had a chilli, tomato, chicken, and pasta thing.

I was starving Matt - had a bag of Doritos (cool original, the best) in the car, didn't really fill me up

Maybe I'm getting old but on the way back I didn't listen to any music. I had a mixture of Radio 2 and Radio 4 on and found it entertaining enough for the whole journey!

Yeah -we found those about a month ago in Sainsburys. Saturday lunchtimes haven't been the same since. And it gives me an excuse to buy some hotdog mustard as well. Hotdogs + fried onions + roll + mustard = satisfaction personified.

If you think you're getting old then Christ I wonder what's wrong with me. Sometimes I go days without actually listening to music of any sort (apart from now cause I walk to Uni etc.)

I've been making corn beef, beef, cheese and lettuce sandwichs these past few days, really nice after the cheese has melted.

It might be dough, but this was 'Potato Gnocchi' on the packet so it's probably potato instead of dough. Gnocchi mean 'lump' so I suppose it could be anything. You could have a gnocchi of excrement if it were possibly to ingest but I don't think it'd be that nice.

I like pizza but - this will sound weird - I don't really like tomato puree or melted cheese.  So I have to have lots of other toppings to cover up the tomato and cheese.  I could never eat a margherita!

I dont like pizzas with loads of toppings on for some reason. Too many flavours. I hate meat on pizzas as well, since it's usually cheap meat which makes everything greasy.

I don't like the tomato sometimes, thats why I pile double cheese on it and then one topping. Usually meatballs. Pepperoni is greasy as hell.

For the record, I think gnocchi is made from spuds.

I make my own pizza dough and cook it on a marble chopping board in my oven.  Dead easy to make and 1000 times better than the bought ones.  Just got to get off my arse and build that pizza oven in the back garden I've been meaning to.

Pizza oven in your garden would be AWESOME. Make a small gazebo and that'd be $%&#ing cool.

Had some chicken tonight, with partially mashed potato, broccoli and bread sauce.
