I currently use Ernie Balls, but I am considering changing them because they die WAY to fast. I'm just curious to know what other brand(s) you guys use to achieve your tone
-
DR tites.
Also a big fan of GHS boomers and Newtones. DRs deliver the tone I like best though.
-
Another DR Tite Fit user here.
occasionally i use Elixir strings too
-
D'Addarios for me - 10-46s on Eb-tuned 25½" scale guitars, 10-52s on Eb-tuned 24¾" scale, 10-59 on my 7-strings.
Have tried many/most other brands, but always come back to D'Addario...
-
I changed to Pyramid 11s maybe 3-4 years back and haven't looked back. They last forever, never snapped one yet, feel great and the tone stays fat.
I get them in lots of ten from Thomann - about £3.00 a pack (actually, they're under three quid... http://www.thomann.de/gb/pyramid_e-gitarre_saiten_011_48.htm)

Ah, a nice old-fashioned strings thread. Evergreen.
Bog-standard D'Addario 10-46, on everything. Having said that, I tried a couple of guitars with 11s at the recent BKP meet and they didn't feel as unmanageable as I expected.
-
Picato. Just recently discovered them, they're great.
-
Newtone
http://www.newtonestrings.com/
11s on Gibson scale, 10s on Fender.
-
Bog-standard D'Addario 10-46, on everything.
Same here, bar my Modern Eagle which has D'Addario 9.5s on it.
-
I switch a lot depending on guitar and how I feel (I switch gauges too).
I like the RIPS Balls (with brass or what around the ball ends), they give some more meat to the plain strings. Also hold up longer.
I like GHS because they're bright and cheap.
I like DR Tites, because they feel great, but IMO they loose brilliance rather quickly.
I love Pyramid, because they're German, they're cheap and the sound and play good.
I like SIT because they are great quality and sound/feel great, hold up well too.
I switch back and forth depending on guitar and how wimsy I am finger wise:
9-42
9-46
9.5-44
10-46

I use Snake Oil Brand - they last a long time without losing their tone. Dean makes me sets up with some strange gauges that I've come to like through the years. I have 10-12-16-26-36-46 for strats, 10-12-16-28-38-48 on PRS and 11-13-17-30-40-50 on Gibsons (though I have a couple with 11-13-17-28-38-48, like my SG Junior). I also like D'Addarios and DR pure blues, though I'm not keen on the gauges of their 11-50 set.
I haven't used anything less than 10 in years, even on PRS's. I tried their 9.5's but went back to 10's.
-
I'm an acid sweaty pig, so i use elixirs. 11-49 on my 24.75 scale guitars. 10-52 and 68 on my 7 string and 10-52-68-95 on my 8. same for acoustics. 13-56 on both my jazzbox and acoustic guitar.
i also had a brief stint with ernie ball coateds, they're pretty nice! should try them again for my next swap on my teaching guitar.
but elixirs last me a month top. afterwards they're all rusted. better than a week for a regular set however!

I picked up a pack of DR's today, and I really like them, much more than the Ernie Balls.

Ernie Ball Regular Slinky on everything (and .66s for the low B on my 7 if I recall). I'm told EBs have more tension than any other set with the same gauge in the same tuning.

That's a big jump from the 46 on the E, does it not feel unbalanced?
I use Newtones. 14-60 or 14-70 depending on whether it's a 25.5 or 24.75 scale guitar.
-
I use D'Addario .010 - .046 for my six and .010 - .059 for my sevens. I do have a set of Blue Steels on the six and a set of .010 - .060 DR Hi Beams for my sevens I'm going to try.
-
Mostly D'Addario (Savarez for Classic).
-
DR Pure Blues in 11s on my Fenders and Feline 10s on my Les Pauls.
-
Currently using Newtone 14-80 on my 6-string multiscale baritone (26-28.5" scale lengths I think...). I think I prefer the feel of D'Addarios, but I must say the Newtones do sound quite good. The D'Addarios handle drop E (E-E-A-D-F#-B) a bit better. Still have a few packs of Newtones left though, I've not changed strings for months and you have to multibuy custom sets!

Woah, typo! I meant 56. :?

Jesus! What tuning are you using?!
I play from drop C to E Standard and I use 11-54 on my Gibson scale guitars. I don't own anything else.

C in 25.5 and b on the Les Paul. Using the thicker cored Newtones on all the wound strings, too (with a wound G).
I don't have a guitar in standard tuning anymore, but I used to play with 12s in E. So I'm a high tension chap anyway.
-
You must have BEASTY hands!!

-
I play in C with 10-46 on my 25.5.
-
D'addario 11-48 standard tuning, I use 10-46 on a particular strat of mine which seems to have higher than usual string tension.
Used to use Feline strings, but the low 50 was a bit thick for me - good for Drop-D though!
-
I play in C with 10-46 on my 25.5.
Man, I couldn't play anything fast with those, they'd never stay in one place!

Aye, those strings would be saggier than Jordan's fanny!

Rotosounds but I have been given a load of DR's from an American friend so will give them a try soon.
-
I've used Ernie Balls since about 1985, never even considered changing brand. Most of the strats have 10 to 46, tele has 11 to 52 and the HSS strat is 9 to 42 and everything's in standard tuning.
I did try the 12 gauge set but the G string was just dull and "plunky" - I think that set needs a wound G with a thinner core, for some reason the thick unwound string doesn't work for me.

Yep I'm firmly in the camp of wound Gs once you get above a 17/18 or so, otherwise they just sound like arse.

Daddario 9-46
I read once apparently they use a thinner core on the wound strings, which is why they feel a gauge lighter than other brands.

Rotosound 11-48 on everything (strats & teles) in standard tuning, 1 strat has ernie ball beefy slinkys 11-54 also in standard tuning, for a little more fight :x
-
Daddarios' 00.95 sets only. Easy to bend and not too bassy cause my Orange Rockerverb 50 has lots of low end. Great balanced set. I somehow always return to Daddario's. Elixirs are great strings thought, but quite expensive.
-
I've already stated my preference, but I would advice anyone to try Pyramid strings - they really are very good (and cheap, less than £3.00 a set at Thomann). I've had the same sets on my LP and Tele for about three months now with countless rehearsals on them and at least six gigs - both still sound great and hold tuning perfectly.
I've started tuning down to Eb recently to make the high notes easier for our singer, plus it also gives my arthritic hands a break from 11s in standard tuning (which shreds your fingers playing four nights a week).
-
Elixirs, just received a pack of DR DDT's to try them out...
-
I am an Ernie Ball player most of the time but lately I tried the DR Drop Down Tuning Strings and they are amazing!
-
I just bought a set of Legacy strings. Only cost £2.99 and you get an extra E and B string. Haven't fitted them yet but I'll write about them when I do.

Yeah, right when i put the DR's on my guitar after replacing the ernie balls, there was a nice noticable difference alot of warmer sound, and they last pretty damn long!
