Title: NPD - new pedal day
Post by: gwEm on September 05, 2011, 11:10:51 PM
well, actually not quite true - got this weeks ago! but i've had no internet at home, so only just been able to post this. its one of our very own juan solo's finest :)

i'm sure all the regulars here will know what this is, so no need for further details!

It sounds transparent as a mountain stream, and I like it loads. Its nice and easy to dial in too, and theres not one sweet spot, but a whole range of usable settings.

My RC boost sounds disappointing compared to this beauty.

^ exactly.  It's a "more" pedal.  It gives you what you have already, but MORE!

I can't do any more like these as Madbean has stopped making the PCB for it and Pete has just snagged the last one, sorry guys. I really like it. it's one of the few pedals that lives up to the hype (though not at the price the real ones change hands for, that's just madness!).

Right, I'm off to get this one built!

Got a couple of darkside boards left (G2) if anyone fancies one of them...

Love the Klon clone - wonderful pedal (I have 2).
What diodes are you using in the G2 ?

PCB looks BUSY. I guess it would be to fit in that little enclosure. I have no idea what the orginal looks like. Did you make those PCB's? or did you buy that one.

Post by: forestcaver on September 06, 2011, 08:04:50 PM
That was a madbean pcb like juansolo mentioned earlier - but it's not too hard to build on strip board - just much larger and wouldnt fit in a small enclosure. The website to check out for lots more info is www.freestompboxes.org. Ther's loads of info on different builds and theory of the klon...

Madbean also has every PCB they sell available as an image used for etching. I like that philosophy. Here's a PCB, buy it from him or make it yourself.

And that's a nice looking pedal!

1n60 from AMS in the States. The ones we sourced in the UK were a much lower forward voltage and the pedal ended up with far less gain. Phil King kindly picks them up for us :)

Madbean's Cornish G2 clone. Ours is slightly tweaked for more vol and gain. But if you back it right off it's still does the G2 thing. As for what it does/is for; it thickens up strats/teles and adds sustain (it's essentially a muff deep down, as are many things). Never got on with it originally until we played with it a bit. Actually love it now.

Yes, they are!  :D

yeah, i've tried the klon version and it's very nice. As juan solo says, though, the prices on those are crazy. what i always found pretty funny was that people said with the gain at 0 it was a clean boost... I mean, sure, that's nice, but if all you want is a clean boost you can get pretty nice clean boosts for like a quarter (maybe even less) than the price of a klon. I guess if you need it all in the one pedal and have no room on your board, maybe, but aside from that...

Mine sound best with the gain on around 1/3rd and the volume on 2/3rds.  A nice kick to the front end of the amp, with a bit of extra drive too.  Fantastic for solos as they add some extra harmonic goodness too  :D

What are they like into a totally clean amp as a lower gain OD?
Title: Re: NPD - new pedal day
Post by: Twinfan on September 07, 2011, 05:34:37 PM
I don't use it that way, so I've not experimented too much to be honest.  From what I've seen, most people use it a booster into an already cooking amp as I think that's what it's designed for.  It probably isn't great into a perfectly clean amp.
Title: Re: NPD - new pedal day
Post by: dave_mc on September 07, 2011, 06:53:16 PM
ah from what i remember it sounded pretty good that way. though as you say, most people probably use it more as a boost.

i was only able to try it into a clean amp so i probably didn't get giving it the best of tries. but i could tell it was nice.

Post by: Brow on September 07, 2011, 08:10:20 PM
I'm looking for something to use on the clean channel of my Splawn for lower gain OD tones as the amp has it's own boost for the OD channel so I wouldn't need it for that.

All of my fave go to ODs that I've always loved on other amps just don't seem to play nice with the Splawn for whatever reason.

How about a Box of Rock?  They're nice into clean channels...

I've seen vids of them and they do seem to sound awesome into NMV Marshalls and Fenders. I'll keep my eyes open for a cheap(er) 1 I think.

shiteeeeloads is an understatement!

Maybe a Wizard's Sleeve (don't ask) would work with the Splawn, having two gains for low and treble frequencies does make it very versatile.

I can probably rattle you together a few of them out of the last batch Phil sent us. If you decide to build one bob me a PM and I'll send you some.

Sad that I can remember doing that one by the resistors on the switch. They're better switches than the blue ones (more robust than the MIC blue things), but they're a swine to get all the resistors and cables on. I think I've tried a different orientation with them every single time and still can't find an easy way of doing it.

Ah well, won't be doing any more... Well not like those ones anyhow ;)

No probs.

Careful when you solder them (probably best to socket). I use a *really* low wattage iron and still managed to crack a couple of those. They're really fragile.

There are other (not as nice) boards out there. One that I fancy doing is a double klone. As there's a board out there with no buffers or charge pump. The pump is no problem to add, to be fair niether are the buffers. But being like that means it'd be cool to do two in a box, the second as a fixed gain stompable boost. Might work, might not. Worth a go.

Just got a couple of other pedals to get out of the way first (one for Matt, one for Phil and the tube thing for you to try). Been waiting for some deliveries from the states for weeks now. I can only think that customs are being slack. :(

yes, you're quite right - i usually like my overdrive pedals to be characterful and change the sound in a more noticeable way. was looking for something different though.. and this is just the ticket.

While I am not always looking for euphony or colouration in my drive pedals, and while I LOVE the Klon, it has never captured my interest beyond, 'oh, that's nice'.

Here's something I've got custom-made for my specific order.
I wanted to have a bi-compressor (Analog.man -like) with ROSS grey box and Dan Armstrong Orange Squeezer. I decided to have a Mastodon-theme outfit for it :)

Works fantastic with a bass too. I use this for 80s pop tunes mainly.
