New Aged Pre-Wired Pickguard (Scratchplate) Day!
This arrived from BKP yesterday morning.
Anyone experiencing a touch of deja vu at this point may remember Nolly's thread about his Custom Shop Relic Strat:
https://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=25139.0 (https://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=25139.0)
In my defence, I'm not a total copycat - it was always going to be aged cream on tortoise, and I was 95% decided on HSS rather than SSS. But Nolly's thread certainly made me decide on a complete pre-wired setup from BKP (rather than buying separate bits), and also helped with the choice of pickups - I was going back and forth between some combination of Crawler, VHII, Abraxas, Mother's Milks, Irish Tours or Slow Hands. Crawler was favourite for a long time, but in the end I've gone for.... Abraxas and a pair of Slow Hands.
I wasn't sure about pot values - I was thinking about 250k rather than 500k because I really didn't want the single-coils too bright/harsh, or maybe 500k volume and 250k tones, but Tim suggested 300k for all three pots, which seemed a good compromise. The cap is a Jensen/BKP 0.022. Wiring is the "standard" HSS setup with a RW/RP middle pickup and the humbucker split in position 2.
It all looks great - excellent relic work all round and super-neat wiring. :D
Now I suppose I need to get the thing put together at last.... :|

It's going in the section where I keep the bits for my relic hardtail Strat project :P :

Should look rather tasty with that guitar body. What neck you having with it. Maple or Rosewood?
-
That looks like a great body Philly - are you going to rout it out yourself?
-
very nice :)
-
congrats, i'm sure it'll serve you well. when i got my IT pre wired i was equally impressed with the wiring and by the time i would have sourced all the bits i don't even think it was more expensive.
even if i sold the guitar the IT board would stay with the old one going back in hassle free and untouched.

Yeah, if I'd bought the same set of BKP pickups, pots, switch etc, plus a scratchplate and plastic parts (probably from Fatboy Guitars), I reckon the total cost would have been at least as much, maybe more. It seemed like a no-brainer! :D

Yep. I have a trusty humbucker routing template I made years ago, should do the trick! I had to wait to actually get the scratchplate because the position of the humbucker varies quite a lot between different manufacturers.

It's a Fender neck with a rosewood board. A certain Mr Venables has done a very nice relic job on it for me. :)
I'm going for a mid-'60s pre-CBS look, but not trying to get all the details slavishly correct (for example my neck has a slab board when it should really be veneer to be period-accurate!)
-
tasty on both fronts mate, congrats!

agree, those pre-wired guards work out pretty decent value i think

aging looks good philly - i have real faith you might finish a project soon :) you must have all the bits now!

I must admit I have, in this case.
In fact I have a few more bits than I need, because I wasn't happy with some of the "relic" parts I bought - sometimes they're a bit over-done.

plus you have all the tools, skills and experience to knock out a lovely relic strat next weekend mate.. motivation motivation motivation!!

Sounds great look forward to seeing the end result.

You make me sound like the Six Million Dollar Man! (or, more accurately, like the scientists who had the technology, who had the capability, to make the world's first bionic man...)
Or Bob the Builder.
But yes, about time I got on with this one....
-
I have complete faith that by next Sunday evening Philly Q will be shredding on a new relic Strat. Nothing, I repeat nothing, will stand in his way.

Hmmm....... :?
-
He will play "That'll be the day" on it.
Only kidding Philly, great choice!
-
So... this thread had already been going for a bit by the time I got to it... is it done yet?
Looking forward to seeing it finished, should be fab :D
btw - If you need it, I can loan you a 4" belt-sander with a 40 grit belt if you need to bring some of the subtler relicing in-line with the other bits... (that arm wear on the body does look a little "tentative" at the moment )
-
Looks great Phil - get it built!
-
Patience is a virtue, guys, patience is a virtue......
I do want to get on with this one, but I shall be taking my time over it. I'm very much a "measure twice, cut once" kind of DIY-er.
(Actually, make that "measure four times, cut once and then measure again to be sure you got it right....")
-
Bump for soundclips :)
-
Excellent wiring job.
I always try to do these as neat and accurate but they mostly end up as provisionary wirings since I keep on changing things.
Cheers Stephan

Now that really will be a VERY long wait.....
-
Guys, even the Mayan calendar predicted this will never be completed... just chill and await the inevitable ebay listing.
:? :)

Actually..... didn't they predict the world would end this year? *
I may yet be saved! :D

No, you're supposed to say " ... it's beautiful!" just as you open the case.

I reckon you're the third from the left, still laughing in disbelief....

I think you need to have a photo blog of the build Philly. I'm expecting to see some quick movement on getting this put together.

any news?

It'll probably be ready in time for Miss Venables's 16th birthday present...

I seriously love it when you lads go off the rails

Ever the optimist, Andy! Not that soon.
I can see it now, showing it to her kids.... "Your grandad Wez worked on this neck, to make it look old!"
"Errrrr....... but it IS old! :? "

And it'll run and run...
Probably, Philly will get it done sooner than is "usual" because of it...
It'll be interesting to see whether the finished guitar is actually made up of the parts currently ear-marked or planned, though

It will, for sure. Totally happy with all the components!
Although.... during the process of acquiring the parts I did buy a neck from MJT, then replaced it with the current Fender one.
And I wasn't happy with a few of the aged metal parts I bought, so they were replaced - a jackplate for example, which looked like it had been attacked with acid then buried in a compost heap. Chrome (as opposed to nickel) just doesn't age that much.

This thread has inspired me to look under my bed and see what's there. It's a terrible place I really don't like to look but it was quite fruitful. Two strat bodies, a neck and a few pickguards. Some hardware too.
I'm sure if I go up into the loft there may be some more.
So everybody check under your beds, check your garages and your sheds just incase a strat has sneaked in, made a bed and become trapped.

How can you just forget that you have guitar bodies and necks lying around? :D
The white strat body could make up one fine super strat. Both bodies and neck looks good.

I didn't really forget, but lack of funds usually stop projects for me. But i'm going to get them both up and running this year, the brown sss first then the white one.

It's a race! Philly vs Tom...
First one to finish a guitar (pics/soundclips/etc) gets the materials from the other's unfinished project.
EDIT: Hope you've enough room under your bed Tom!!
EDIT2: Or Philly, for that matter...

Not fair! Even if I do ever finish it, there's no chance of soundclips!

I think Philly will be buying a bunk bed soon - he'll then be able to put stuff on the floor under the bed and also on the bed under the upper bed. Lots of stuff can be stored in this way.

That's actually a very good idea, Ian - I've run out of space in the horizontal plane, so... go vertical!
Can you get "bunk sofas" and "bunk armchairs" as well?

You could probably make your own.
Making a Bunk Sofa
You can make tasteful and functional furniture from existing components around the home.
You will need:
Two Sofas
Four spare guitar necks
Nail-Gun
Spirit Level (optional)
Instructions
1. Put one sofa in the middle of the room
2. Grab the nail gun and one of the guitar necks
3. ...
Hell, you're practical, you can see where this is going, I don't need to spell it all out
-
True, I am practical...
.... but it sounds like hard work.
Might not get round to it until.... I've finished putting the Strat together. :?
-
Oh that looks Sweeeet!
