Yep, I've just realised it's been six months since I bought a guitar :o As most people on here will know, this is an eternity for me  The thing is, I'm not GASing for anything either :? I've just got my PRS SE Cu24 to sell, and then I've sold off all the guitars and amps I'm not using. I've just kept my absolute favourites, which I'm playing more often and loving more than ever.
Less is more....?

Indeed, less is Much more . PDT_003

Less is more....?
Oh dear oh dear, I fear I have assumed the mantle.
..... at a much lower price point, obviously.
-
On the "less is more" point, I know you're right.... but it's so difficult to get rid of stuff. :|
-
Yngwie says "How can less be more? More is more!!"
Actually, it's more like: "how can that be? Less cannot be more! It's impossible! More is more!"
Anyway, more is always more until you've got too much and then, only once you've tried and tested everything, you can downsize and think "this is excactly what I want".
First you need the experience of having as massive rig and only then you can happily downsize.
-
Is it wrong that I'm watching a nice (currently cheap) guitar on eBay purely as somewhere to put my MM/CS set that's currently in a box...
I tried to get down to 3, currently at 5...
-
Yngwie says "How can less be more? More is more!!"
I laughed out loud when I read this.
When talking about numbers of guitars or something, I'm definitely with this Yngwie bloke (I'll never forget that youtube vid of him just chucking a strat down on the pile on the sofa after showing it to the camera ).
Don't think I'd really use "less is more" in this instance, for me, it's definitely "more is more"
I do use the term over creative stuff, spices in cooking, etc, but I wouldn't in this case.
But that's beside the point - well done sir! All those trips to Guitars Anonymous must have paid off...
-
It's not wrong John, all part of the fun!

This is exactly it for me. I've tried pretty much everything, worked out what I like, picked up a few choice guitars and Marshall-style amps and now I'm in Happy Land :D

Not wrong at all, I've spent months looking for "something nice with gold hardware" just because I have a set of Emeralds with gold polepieces.

You should sell them to me!

Nah, I sell lots of stuff but always keep BKPs until I'm sure (a) I really do have no use for them or (b) I don't like them!
(In any case, I may have acquired the "something nice with gold hardware".... )

What would that be?...
Maybe a 1978 Gibson Black Beauty that was just lying around on eBay!
But Philly... What if they disassemble it for shipping?

Nah, I'm a fan of LP Customs, always on the lookout for a suitable one, but I've never found one sufficiently lightweight to buy. If I ever do buy one I very much doubt it'll be a 70s example, seeing as most guitars from that decade seem to be impregnated with lead....
You're right though, if they disassembled it I'd never put it back together.
-
Yngwie says "How can less be more? More is more!!"
I'd never normally side with the Swedish widdler, but he's right when it comes to owning guitars.
I've currently got...
Les Paul
Flying Vee
'72 Tele Custom.
I want...
Les Paul Custom (Pelham Blue)
Les Paul Junior (Sunburst)
SG Junior (Cherry)
Goldtop (R8)
Black Beauty (P90s)
Ricky 360 (Jetglo)
Billy-Bo (white)
Gretsch Sparkle Jet (red)
non-reverse Firebird (off-white)
CS Esquire (blue, like Dave's old one)
LSL DC Junior (white)
... just off the top of my head like
Next year 'should' see my collection grow once some debts are paid off.

Time to post my GAS list...
They're less expensive guitars (apart from a few) but there are more of them and they'll all be loaded with BKPs or TV Jones Pickups.
What I have:
Gibson Les Paul Studio
Fender American Strat
Fender American Tele
GAS List:
Fender Special Edition Custom Telecaster Spalted Maple HH
Gretsch Electromatic Pro Jet with Bigsby
Gretsch Power Jet Firebird
Fender Classic Player Baja Telecaster
Fender 60th Anniversary Cabronita Telecaster
Gibson Flying V Standard
Fender Special Edition Custom Telecaster FMT HH
Gibson Les Paul Jr
Fender Classic Player 50s Strat
Fender Road Worn 60s Strat
PRS SE Bernie Marsden
PRS SE Dave Navarro
Caparison Dellinger C2
I'm also hoping for a Feline Lion Supreme because after seeing numerous pics and clips of it and the specs I'm convinced that it is my dream guitar :D
Also hoping to begin building more guitars on my own... I rarely find the time and the ones I have built have been for my family...
Gibson Les Pauls are my favourite guitars but I don't have any on the list because
1) They have 300k volume pots and pcbs and I don't want to deal with replace them.
2) Im very happy with my current les paul.
Well... I'm no mathematician but that list seems to have beat yours... Huh :D
-
Oh, and a PRS Santana too.

I'll take one of those DC Les Paul Juniors you've got stashed under the bed .. unless it's been kept next to the potty

No potty - I'm good at making my way to the bathroom and back, even half-asleep.
And I've only got one DC Les Paul Junior now. Unless you fancy an old Gordon-Smith GS1?
-
I got a compliment on my socks last week...
-
I'm not posting what I'm gassing for until I've won the auction ;)
-
I'm GASing for another PRS given that the one I got recently is SO good. I feel like I need a spare set up a bit differetly
-

Ah, but there are so many different PRS models, seems a shame to get the same one again...
-
true...
but ruling out the hardtails & wacky pickup equipped models, it doesn't leave THAT much in my price range.
I might even rule out models with blade switches, and after that ones with overtly quilted tops etc.
-

ew.

Is that a good "ew" or a bad "ew"?
-
Is that a good "ew" or a bad "ew"?
The latter I think.
Can't please everyone - I don't like most PRS' myself, the Santana is the exception along with the Mira.
-
Yeah, fair enough. I'm not fond of the Santana myself, but I've grown to like most other PRS models - although I am wary of the odd-shaped pickups on certain models, I prefer to stick with regular humbuckers!
-
Long time by your standards! I've not bought anything since your SGR either (though an epiphone riviera did accidentally turn up and my bank balance took a hit - not my fault!) and I'm having a similar sort of feeling about that. They say true love grows over time - certainly true with guitars.
Don't agree with your preferences in instruments at all but it is certainly a nice feeling to find something you just keep finding more and more from, whatevrr that happens to be for you.
-
Are you getting treatment for this Dave? Dr 38th prescribes a PRS factory visit.
-
 It is the open-house factory PRS Experience in September, but I'm not going. Maybe one day.
-
I dunno, September is a VERY long time away...
You'll almost be able to say 9 months by then...
So I really don't think you can afford to say "but I'm not going" with such certainty
(unless you've already got a holiday booked with the missus or something)
-
Deffo not going - you need to plan flights, tickets, hotels in advance ;)
I might go in a couple of years if I can sort the trip out around work.

Would that be Dave Grohl by any chance? Can't get enough of him :D
-
Dave, is there something you feel you should be telling us? ;)
-
Nope!
-
Maybe he started playing jazz
-
Nope, just started buying guitars again. I had a feeling it was going to happen ;)

That is a lovely, lovely thing.

I don't remember that!
-
The Goldtop I had sounded like ass next to my PS Signatures. This one however, does not! I took my blue Sig (with trem) along with me when I tried this one out and I totally expected it to get its backside kicked, but it didn't. I think my old Goldie must have been a lemon. Very rare for PRS.
This DGT Standard sounds like the biggest Tele or SG you've ever played. Very nice indeed. I really didn't expect to like it that much, but once I tried it I didn't want to part with it. I guess it spoke to me...
-
The DGT is definitely growing on me. I found the extra volume knob hugely offputting to begin with, looks-wise, but I'm oblivious to it now.
I wouldn't be surprised to find myself buying one at some point.....!
-

I really, really like mine. It's the best guitar I've owned certainly, and quite possibly the best I've ever played. Everything on it feels very right to me and I think it helps that DG's approach to amps is keep it one channel and do your tone changes with the guitar and a couple of pedals, which is what I feel most comfortable doing too and the guitar really feels designed with that in mind.
-
Yep, it's certainly a versatile guitar. I find it works a little better into my 65 Amps, whereas the Sigs sound better than the DGT into the XTC.
I prefer my Signatures overall as they have the slightly bigger necks, more versatile switching, one volume control and a broader tone; but this DGT is a nice "more vintage-y" alternative.
-

Yes - love playing mine. Very versatile, good split sounds and great volume/tone control response. The only guitar I've got I haven't replaced the pickups (excluding my 63 SG). I don't find the volume control(s)/position any problem.
-
No, you get used to it don't you? Plus the bridge volume is roughly where the volume on a McCarty is, and that's the pickup I use the most anyway.
-

I dunno, you wanna see current PRS UK stock. Their rep brought seven of them into my shop yesterday for a guy to look at because they didn't have the Modern Eagle he fancied in stock. A CU22 semi hollow, couple signatures, a 513 and whatever else. The new SE with the beveled top was a better player than all of them.
I think they've not had stuff through from the US in a while and all they've got is stuff that has all been punted back on sale or return.
-
I really didn't expect to like it that much, but once I tried it I didn't want to part with it. I guess it spoke to me...
Nah.. it was n't the guitar talking to you. I reckon Mark from Guitars4you is a bit of a ventriloquist - when he sees you coming towards the shop he gets all excited and sees all these £ signs in front of him and hides out the back, waits for you to look at a PRS and throws his voice saying "Ooooh Dave, buy me buy me"
Very nice guitar by the way!
-
Ha ha! Mark knows me better than that, I think he was as surprised as I was when I said I'd buy it
nfe - my DGT was built on 18th June, so Headline have certainly had a recent PRS delivery. The key dealers who sell most guitars (World Guitars, Peach Guitars, Guitars4You etc) snag all the good stuff out of the shipment as soon as it arrives. The other guys tend to get the bones left over, and some of those can be very average guitars - especially in the looks department.
-
Most of the PRS dealers I'm aware of seem to get pretty decent examples, looks and sound-wise. Then again, perhaps the sites I peruse are the main dealers anyway - I guess there are others who just stock a few guitars and pass under my radar.
Anyway, hasn't Paul Reed Smith fully realised his 21 secret "Rules of Tone" now, so PRS no longer make any lemons? :P
-

They all had immense tops as it happens, which is why he brought those. How they sounded and played probably didn't much matter since the guy was, in said reps words, the perfect PRS customer ie. Can't play
-
Probably - my old DGT was a 2008 model ;)
I'm pretty sure the problem with that one was the body wood being a bit too soft - I noticed it when I fitted strap locks.
-
Great sales rep

Great sales rep
He's excellent actually. And a top guy. Just knows who buys his lines. That's certainly the majority of people who've bought high-end PRSs in the shops I've worked in and it's what Headline reps have always said. You get millions of great players in trying them - many like them, but the majority of the guys who usually spend the money on them are guys who fiddle about once in a while and like to look at them. Which is an entirely valid market, of course.

You'd only need half a bed to fit that lot under.
-
I just thought I'd add... I'm still blown away by the CE22 I got hold of. I'd like another as a backup, or another bolt on model. Problem is, either I got a really good deal on the CE22 or every other CE22/24 or Swamp Ash (HSH) is overpriced!
-
I think the Swamp Ash Special was always more expensive than the CE models.
But as I've said before, there are surprisingly few secondhand CEs around, given how long the model lasted (in various formats). I think you probably did get a good deal!
-
I've managed to hunt out a couple of CE's.
I found one that was beat up and didn't have the original case, it was still £200 more than I paid for mine, which isn't beat up at all, just has the McCarty switching.
I also found one for about the same price as mine. It was older but it has non original pickups, a re-fret where the gaps under the fret wire haven't been nicely filled. extra holes from a 3 screw trus rod cover subsequently replaced with an official PRS one, and it has had a really poor job done on changing the nut. No idea about the wiring. I'd guess it's carrying a few scars too.
It seems like if you can find a regular dude wishing to sell one, you can get a deal. Buying from a store seems to lead to paying more than I'd expect. I think I was really lucky. I think the teal CE that was in the seconds out here went for £620 on ebay, and then I'm sure it appeared on brighton gumtree for £950. Seems to be quite a wide range on what things can be found for.
-

I was going to ask if you'd seen that one!
-
CEs tend to sell cheap, but get priced up too expensive. £600-£700 seems to be the sweet spot.
-
I've also noticed that CEs tend to be relatively beaten up, by PRS standards - which is fair enough, it's definitely a "player's guitar". :)
-

If you can find people willing to part with them at that price I think you're lucky. Though it's possible, best bet I've found for that is ebay still, but people need to be willing to start the bidding at what they would consider to be low.
I did see the Teal CE. But I fancied something different to the CE, like a Swamp Ash Special. I've been having a think about switching options with the old toggle style ones.
