If you do, what are you going to replace the tubes with, when you have to?

i have a savage se... similar, a bit smoother (from what I hear, I've never actually been able to find a savage to try), with reverb and a few other extra features (pentode/triode is cool) and 6L6's or 5881's instead of the 6550's in the savage.

I'm hoping my uncle has enough spare NOS 6L6's lying around (and hopefully they match closely enough) when I need to swap 'em.

It could still sound a little different with fewer (but the same) tubes, but probably not  anywhere near as much different as one with different tubes. (the rack one you're looking at, that is)

Just in case there are different tubes (that I might want to replace), what do you think of JJs, Teslas and Tungsols?

Also, can anyone recommend a good cabinet that won't break the wallet to go along with the Engl?  I'm looking for something tight and responsive but that can still resonate well when you need it to.

Once again, this may be a bit too much to ask for my budget, but an Engl in my price range has already been found, so....

I just got a framus 2x12 (2 celastion v30).
really good for 300 euro 8)
but its a mono cabinet so you will need to mod it for stereo if you get one

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but it isn't too far back and I wanted to get some more things clarified.

Today I went to the store and played a 6505 head - I was really underwhelmed.  It sounded buzzy and farty no matter how much I tweaked the EQ - I'm guessing that's a result of the cr@ppy bias job it comes with stock.

I remember being impressed by the 5150 combo I played, but they've yet to get one in that I could play on in both the Sam Ash and Guitar Center in my area.

I listened to clips of the RG50TC and it seemed pretty good, distortion-wise - pretty close to what I'm looking for.  However, I'm not sure if its cleans are very good (then again, the 5150 doesn't have particularly awe-inspiring cleans either :)).  Does anyone have more info on them?

^ the cleans on the randall are better than the 5150, that's for sure. What I wasn't too fussed on with the randall is that you have clean, a kind of pushed clean (good for maybe lighter classic rock), and then you're pretty much into metal- from the voicing even if not the amount of gain. Not too much in-between.

I suppose I can get an Epi VJ and an overdrive pedal later on, or something similar - at the moment, I really can't afford to go much more than the 5150 or RG50TC would go for used.

Do you know of anybody that might have clips of the Randall doing cleans and metal, and perhaps even some of the things it's not so good with?

Also, I'd say the 5150 is a better amp. Not amazingly versatile, but what it does well, it does very well (and it probably does the rock thing better than the randall, and definitely does metal better). The randall is pretty much a budget amp.

I'm not sure about a VJ- that'll cover classic rock pretty well, not so much harder, more modern rock (eg 80's), which the randall doesn't do too well either.

I'd say 5150, seeing as how you're in the states, as they're pretty good value. That being said, twilight odyssey had two which both broke on him, you might want to see what he has to say about them.

I tried one out in a shop (with an amp booth) and had the master on 2 which was already very loud.  It sounded amazing for metal, not buzzy or loose at all - just begs you to play Metallica riffs from the Puppets/Justice era (just has that kind of natural EQ to it imo).

As I may have mentioned one or twice  :roll: this amp is on my list as 'next to buy'.  I'm gonna get the 6505+ model.  The new credit card sitting here is getting VERY tempting.

Right.  I'll take your word for it, seeing as I can't find an RG50TC around here.

About the breaking thing, though - I've heard similar comments a bit; maybe they aren't very low-upkeep?  That might be a bit of a problem for me, as I've never owned a tube amp, and only know the basics of what to do (using the standby).

I didn't play the 6505 very loud.

 I'd love to be able to play loud, but I'm afraid I can't - the parents and the neighbors might get kinda mad :P

It's actually one of the main problems I have with the 5150/6505 - the thing is goddamn LOUD.  I'm not gigging any time soon, and while I wouild like an amp that I could gig with later on (when I don't suck), I need something that I can play at home and get a good tone out of without being kicked out by my parents.

I'd like to see what I could pull off with a Hotplate, but I'm hard-pressed for cash as it is, seeing as I can't work and don't even have the money saved up yet.

By the way: Electric Wizard is awesome.
