Semi's

Uh Oh.........the guitar bug bit again this weekend.

I picked up a wonderful Washburn HB35 in wine red.  For any of you ES335 lovers out there this is a superb guitar for the price.  The construction is maple with a mahogany block running down the middle, and its acoustic tone is as good as any Gibson ES335's I've tried in recent times.  I happilly changed the strings over to my usual 10's and noodled away over the weekend without plugging it in, just enjoying the playability and the acoustic tone from it, but yestaerday I decided to plug it into the Marshall..............

The Washburn 621 and 623 humbuckers are obviously ceramic, or similar over-powered things (why stick high output humbuckers in a semi-acoustic Washburn??? ) and they cause my Marshall to overdrive even on my clean channel.

Now I realise that re-wiring a 335 is a whole day at the workbench with a couple of cold beers and a lot of patience, but anyone got any suggestions as to which of Tims excellent products should be going in it?  I was thinking 'Stormy Mondays'...........any other suggestions?

I have unpotted AII Stormy Mondays in my 335 and they sound great.  I have another semi acoustic PRS clone that I put AII Mules into and that sounds good too.  The SM's will get you a Crossroads tone, the Mules have a thicker, more midrangey tone.

My Mules in my V sound great, but I'm just cautious of over-powering the 335

For an ES-335 I would go with some very low output pickups....The Stormy Mondays will be good in that guitar.
I have also a sort of semi acoustic guitar (chambered Les Paul Standard) which sounds great, but I'll put a Miracle Man in the bridge position because the stock medium output BB-pro sucks in that guitar, while the neck pickup is great.

I hope you don't have any problems with a medium output pickup in the bridge position of your semi acoustic....they are very picky about it and the best way is to go with high output or very low output -> not medium.

I put a Mule set in my 335. Very nice. Clean, the neck pickup rings and rings; the bridge pickup is crisp and clean without being harsh like the previous pickups.

When I hit the button on my Tube Zipper the sounds shifts from being a gentle caress to being grabbed by the scruff of the neck by someone with a switchblade.

Tim's recommendation: very happy.

Let us know how you get on with the hollowbody. I also have a 335 style that i'm throwing PG blues into. I'm thinking of copping out though and just splicing the wires

Oh, and I'd certainly recommend moving up to 11s. I found a MAJOR increase in tone when I did this not so long ago.

And I find bending strings at the first fret hurts in a nice kinda way...
