MIJ Les Pauls

I'm sure theres been loads of threads on this subject but the search feature on this forum is a bit cr@p and I cant find anything specific.

Anyway, I'm looking for a new LP and would like a MIJ one of some kind. Price roughly £400, give or take £50. Basically, which brands are considered the "best" MIJs? Edwards look nice but they only do really flamed models by the looks of things, I think I'd like a plaintop tobaccoburst but not totally sure yet.

Theres a Burny on Japan Guitars but I dont know if its overpriced or not, what do you think? http://www.japanguitars.co.uk/page%205%20Burny.html (the last one on the page for £455)

Edwards would cost me less, how does the quality compare? I've also been looking at the John Sykes models but cant decide whether all that silver is too tacky and shiny or not!

Cheers

edit - another thing - how much customs could I get charged?

Oh, and I just found this on ebay, good price?  http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ORVILLE-Gibson-Les-Paul-Standard-Maple-Top-Guitar_W0QQitemZ320177642929QQihZ011QQcategoryZ33040QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting

Just noticed the outline of the inlays on that look a bit dodgy on second thoughts, the guitar looks great except for that :(

The edwards customs have ebony fretboards which would make a differnce I guess.

For customs, add 20% to the price including shipping usually I think

17% VAT, and something else like duty is 3-5% maybe?

Well, I myself have a J Tokai, it's good, although it's poly finished. The stock pups aren't very impressive, but they can be changed to some nice bk's. I think Epi Elitists are also very good. Then there's Edwards, and old Ibanez and loads of othr 80's copycats.

that burny looks very nice (apart from that oddball d-string tuner)! If it's on Japan guitars it's bound to be a good example - he only seems to buy the better ones.

Didn't one of the boys here buy that Blue Custom from this chap and he wasn't 100% happy with his "Mint condition" description...

Sambo got the blue Burny and was, I think, very happy.

I bought an Orville by Gibson goldtop from the same guy and didn't agree at all with the "near mint" description.  Of course a term like that's subjective, but it had 5 or 6 loose fretboard inlays which really should have been mentioned.  I got the inlays repaired by Feline - then sold the guitar (and kept my Edwards LP).

I'd guess that's a very fair price, but he says it had a "K" serial number which means it may be Korean (or at least wasn't built at the Fugi-Gen factory in Japan).  Also it doesn't have the long tenon neck joint, which is seen as very desirable.  It's no lightweight either, over 10lbs.

hmm I think I'll give that one a miss then. I think Edwards would be the best bet as they seem to be great quality but I cant decide whether I want a flame or plain top now!

edit - I think I may end up getting the same honeyburst edwards as indy and dave_mc, it looks awesome on these pics

That second one (Tokai love rock) just might have the prettiest top I have ever seen.

It is a beauty, but almost too pretty for rock'n'roll I think.

Look at the lovely clean routing in the neck pickup cavity - that's a good example of a long tenon.

Yeah thats really tacky and ugly, I cant stand quilt tops. I think so far the Edwards LP standard in honeyburst is winning but if possible I'd like to find a nice tobacco burst plain top.

There's this one, but it still has a bit of flame, not really a "Slash" model.

Yeah I saw that, shipping from Switzerland though so am unsure about that :?

I'm gonna go to sound control on friday and play a load of guitars anyway to see what I like, I might even end up going with a 2nd hand PRS Santana SEII in tobacco sunburst, I like how those guitars play and feel, they just dont look as cool as Les Pauls :P
