Can you run a pre-amp such as a JMP1 or a Rocktron Pirhana into the front end of a valve amp (if the EQ is set as flat as possible)?

I know you can run 1 into the return of an FX loop, but would my original question be an option if the amp didn't have an FX loop?

The answer is "yes". It may not be the most ideal way, tonally, to use the pre-amp, but it should work fine through any amp's clean channel.

It usually ends up way too trebly in my experience

As the other guys have said- you can run it in front of the amp, but it won't sound great. You will certainly have to tweak your patches to make them sound better.

I'm just asking so that when I finally make up my mind what pre-amp I want, I know that I have a way of using it in the short term until I get a power amp etc :)

if the amp you want to run it into has an fx loop, run it into the fx loop return, to bypass the pre of the second amp.

The only amp I have that has an FX loop is my 100w Marshall jcm800 and it's just too loud to be of any use. So the plan was to use the pre-amp into my Orange or Carlsbro valve heads until I can get a power amp sorted :)
