Well, I've got the first half of my list together ...
So, in no particular order --
10. Megadeth, United Abominations
Sociopolitical and religious, cantankerous and preachy ... ah, where would be without Mustaine's brilliant chops and endless bitching?
Standout tracks: Washington Is Next, Gears Of War, Amerikhastan
9. Rush, Snakes & Arrows
Rush returns with a roundhouse kick straight to the head! Brilliant playing and production. Plus, a folk Zeppelin-inspired instrumental by one of my alltime favourite guitarists, Alex Lifeson. The lyrics once again enter the realm of poetry and social commentary, so get your thesaurus and New York Times out for this one.
Standout tracks: Armour And Sword, Hope, Malignant Narcissism
8. Coheed And Cambria: Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV Part 2: No World For Tomorrow
Less classic rock and more anthemic 80s sounding ... I like! A lot of hollow body guitars used on this one, which only accentuates the Rush worship, but the production is top notch. Aside from the seque The Fall Of House Atlantic, this is Coheed's strongest album, less the drumming.
Standout tracks: Feathers, The Running Free, Gravemakers & Gunslingers
7. Symphony X, Paradise Lost
Probably the heaviest, densest Symphony X album to date. They still retain their trademark sound, but Romeo's orchestration is improved and this sounds much more like an rpg soundtrack than anything else done to date -- more strings/choirs, less shred guitar. Top album!!
Standout tracks: Serpent's Kiss, Paradise Lost, Seven
6. Heaven And Hell, Live From Radio City Music Hall
Do I really need to explain this one??! PDT_008
If you only buy one CD or DVD in 2007, make this it! If you have, but didn't buy this one yet, shame on you!
What are you waiting for? Go!!
Standout tracks: Yes!
