Not as in location (but you can add that I suppose, people do post from work I guess)

But as in life. I'm interested to know what people are up to outside the awesome-ness of this forum. Not to sound weird at all.. PDT_006

I am currently in my last year of secondary school (thus making me eighteen) and hope to carry onto university @ either Kingston or Glasgow. Hard times to be honest, but everyone has there fair share I guess.

So, anyone else?

GCSE's in 9 weeks =O.

Still , a career in music is on the cards :D. Not sure about afterwards, but maybe go into session guitar stuff would be cool.

At university at Dartington College Of Arts, word to the wise, if you're pretty sure of who you are as a musician, and are looking to get more onto a career path from being at uni, don't come here. I'm leaving in the summer and starting a 2 year foundation (doing the 3rd year makes it a degree) in Professional Musicianship at BIMM (the one they're opening in Bristol), which means lots of paperwork and stupid financing balls, especially considering my SLD, it's funny how they make you do more paperwork if you're Dyslexic.

Good luck in your GCSE's/A levels/whatever qualification you're doing guys.

In bed... trying to sleep, and failing

A level year @ school. probably going for an apprenticeship in electrics, or electronics (more interesting than a fully academic job or plain ol' manual labour) after A levels, mighty tempted to leave now though... just really can't be $%&#ed

The lyrics of Time come to mind... "And then one day you find 10 years have passed behind, no one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun."   What happened to high school?  College?   Time goes by fast, faster than it seems!    I'm still working on my IT degree, though I've been going to school long enough to be a doctor now    I'm working on getting a house of my own, so that I can turn the volume up to 11 and rock out without anyone getting mad!

.

it comes down to being good special needs or bad special needs.  As someone in that business we all like the people with difficulties that do well, doesnt mean we make it easy for you... personally i have always been devils advocate for the others... seriously, this year i have intelligent kids who will fail completely acedemically but are travelling to dancing and music shows every weekend.. its clear they will get nothing out of school and its clear we have failed them. but then they are all bad lads and we have only failed them because they couldnt focus in lessons :?

i was basically labeled as dyspaxic at school but partly due to my parentts in denial and partly due to the education system it was ignored and hoped it would disapear.

its still there,,, but it gets worked around... a dyspraxic guitar builder is not a promising concept but its always been something i lived with and alwas will be

I was labelled as hyperactive at school. I couldn't concentrate on anything that I found boring. Like maths! Even though I forced myself to learn Trig' at college, studying Engineering.  So what you do is turn it into an advantage! I'm convinced having a brain that thinks at a 1000 miles an hour is what kept me alive as a dispatch rider for 10 years. I'm now 42. I sleep around 4-5 hours a night. Drive trucks for a living and have a mortgage on a nice place, with more guitars than I need and a massive black Koch.

I did well at school but under acheived at collage / Uni.

Still I've been working as a software developer for 2 years now so who cares? I'm 35 and I have a wife (Prozacbear) who gets worse GAS than me, a mortgage on a nice flat, and some very nice guitar gear that I REALLY shouldn't have bought.

Me too. I'm questioning whether I want to go to Uni, 3/4 years of more essay writing? I dunno.

Doubt I'll even get the grades so it's hardly a decision

After failing my A-Levels in Design and Technology and Maths miserably I went to college and did a BTECH National Diploma in Popular Music, which covered most aspects: recording (both as an an engineer and 'being' recorded), performance, composition, Music Technology, some theory etc.

Did really well at that and managed to get a part time/part voluntary job at a studio as an engineer and also teaching younger kids at 'RockSchool' Workshops while also working a normal job in a warehouse.

I absolutely hated the warehouse work so saved my wages for 2 years and decided to try the voluntary thing for as long as I could, just too see and hope that a job would come of it. I really enjoyed doing engineering and teaching, but as it was voluntary (to get the experience and to get my foot in the door so to speak) I went through my life savings in a year while just trying to survive. So basically I had to give it up and get a proper job in an office.

The office job is ok, it keeps my car running and also keeps me in guitars and other GAS related items, but it's not what I want to do with my life.

I'm looking at getting a quality covers/tribute act together to hopefully work it to a point where I can gig enough to cut the office work down to part time and then atleast I'm doing something I want to do some of the time :)

So I'm 21 and in my final year of a Chemistry with Teaching degree, so in July I'll be a fully qualified chemist and a teacher. Unemployed (for now) and living with my girlfriend.

Apart from being given a court order to be evicted in a month or so, all is well.

I'm 19, about 3/4 the way through of my first year of uni allready. Studying Media Production BSc at DMU, which is allright. I've got an essay due in 3 weeks though and I dont really know how to even start it (I'm cr@p at writing), my tutor hasnt exactly been useful either :? Not really sure where this is gonna take me, I wouldnt mind doing video post-production stuff (I'm also cr@p at directing and having good ideas for video), or something to do with radio if next years radio module turns out to be any good. I like photography but nowhere near good enough to make any money off it.

Still trying to find a good original band to play in, no luck so far :( I would like a career in music but I dont have the patience or discipline to learn theory or playing fast, so I'd be a pretty useless session musician, I doubt anyone would hire me

An event band would be a good idea Brow as they actually earn a shed load of cash. You need to learn 1000's of tunes that you hate but a lot that you like too. I've thought about it but can't find anyone dedicated enough, all i get is what i call pub talk and no action cos they are too hungover or coming down from drugs to do anything on a Sunday!

I had an ex girlfriend who went to Uni and studied Art. Another studied Archeology. Both ended up doing regular jobs and not using their degrees. Why? Is it that students just keep lecturers in employment?
I would always have a contingency plan if your looking to earn money from something you love. I tried the photography route and now the world and his wife are great photographers. Just look at some of the stuff on Flickr.com Look at all the bands that don't make it too. I don't want to sound negative and the harbinger of doom but you also have to be realistic and learn something that is essential.
