Schecter! .. and stuff!
« on: March 12, 2008, 05:54:30 PM »
I was browsing through my potential next guitar (or guitars if I end up getting all of them through time)

And I came down to this:

(forgot the Jackson SL3)

I might have forgotten a point that may rock my decision so if there's anything, please feel free to tell me, lol

Anyways, I was thinking along the lines of Jackson, ESP, even a standard Epiphone! (see picture) Then it hit me, Schecter! And then I looked up the prices and they were SO low. Story behind this?

And they pretty much compete well with my other choices.

The MH1000 is around £720 but I could probably go a tiny bit higher.

So really this thread is for information on Schecter AND what seems to be a good choice. I'm currently looking at the Schecter C-1 Classic, 24 fret, Mahogany (MAH), Neck-thru, Maple neck (with a hint of Walnut, oh yes)

I don't mind about body shape either.

I'm looking for a Metal guitar, but also for pretty much anything. There are FRs there too cause if I don't see a TOM that doesn't 'win', so to speak. I'll just go for an FR. The Schecter C-1 Hellraiser FR even has an OFR!

Please help. PDT_014

(Will answer any questions too, I know I've missed out something, lol..)

WARNING - THIS WILL NOT HELP GAS.

Schecters are absolutely amazing guitars, at absolutely amazing prices. They're one of the only companies that seem to take note of the exchange rate, and as such are infinitely better value than the LTDs, Ibanez's etc. Brilliant guitars - Brilliantly built, look fab, great hardware -Tick every box.

Now just waiting for the jeff loomis 7 string to make its way to England....

Either that or I buy one when I'm in the states in April...
My last FM.
ESP Horizon NTII.
ESP Viper Camo.
ENGL Screamer.

If you're prepared to buy used/2nd hand, why not look for Charvels or Jacksons etc too?

You'd probably be able to buy a better guitar 2nd hand for the same money as some of those new.

Just an idea :)

I'm not really up for buying 2nd hand. They seem to be too much of a hassle for me to scope out.

I voted for the SLSMG, mainly because I'm biased towards Jackson.  Anything that comes out of their US or Japanese factories is usually really good (though the cheapo Indian stuff is lousy & shouldn't be called Jackson IMO)
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

I would probably say SLSMG too, (but that's probably because it's the only one I've owned!).

-Awesome neck
-Feels/plays fantastically
-Looks fantastic
-Sounds not too shabby with the EMG 81/85 set
-Not TOO expensive (I managed to pick one up off ebay which had been given quite a few upgrades- Schaller locking tuners, locking bridge, professional setup + nut grind, deluxe Jackson hard case, for £490).

But I think it's worth bearing in mind that you've shortlisted some very different beasts. An Epi LP is practically incomparable to the Ibanez for example. It might help if you narrow down what you want in terms of feel/playability. Scale length, neck profile e.t.c.

Schecter make some great guitars (the aforementioned Loomis sig being far and away my favourite, especially now you can get them with TOMs), but it's worth bearing in mind they have quite fat necks when compared with the Jacksons, ESPs and Ibbys.

Of the guitars you've mentioned, I like the ESPs most, the Eclipse being one of the only EMG equipped guitars I've liked the sound of. It also played very nicely indeed.

Do you know the neck dimensions? I'm not looking for a thin neck. I even quite like Gibson 60s.

I played some Schecters a few years ago and was impressed at how nice they were. I'm sure one of those guitars was this,

In my opinion they easily beat the comparable Ibanez guitars out there [/img]

+1. I have an EC-1000 (vintage black) with EMG 81/60 and I'm not swapping them for BKPs... yet ;) Playability is great, it's comfortable and not too heavy and it sounds brilliant. I have days when I dig the thinner neck of my Jackson, but the extra tone and umph I get with the ESP usually win in the end. Bought it 1,5 years ago, also considered the Schecter Hellraiser but ended up going with the EC-1000. Both are quality instruments! And yeah, the Schecters have some pretty nice, fat necks.

Gibson 60's necks are thin - or slim as they call it. The 50's are the 'fat' necks.

Hmmm

You said you weren't looking for a thin neck ... and like 60's Gibson necks?

Confused  :o
