Has this Place Made Me More Tame?
« on: March 13, 2008, 08:14:03 PM »
The answer is probably not, but i would like to think so, or would have until an occurrence yesterday prompted me to write this thread.  This is an incident that occurred online, so i thought i would keep the grievances online and complaints online.

So yesterday i was officially kicked off of Sevenstring.org - the enitre site - PERMANENTLY.  This can be remedied, and i will not go into the details of the remedy otherwise they may observe and thwart my shifty plan  .

In anycase here is what happend.  There was some thread that was a year old, and somehow it was on the first page.  I proceeded to look at the thread, about this guy's custom guitar, and then commented.  I made some stupid sarcastic comment about the fretboard inlays and byzantine christianity (the two were related).  I came back a day later (yesterday) -and checked on the thread and the mass of the community there had assailed my post.  I thought it was all very funny that they should get so riled up by such a stupid, and obviously misinterpreted, comment.  However, one post caught my eye, it was refuting the basic fundamental truth of my statement that Celtic Crosses are derived from Byzantine art.  I then proceeded to hold my ground and prove my point, as i have been taught to do all my life: defend your position if you know it is right.

Now, rightly so, this was completely off topic at this point, the discussion was supposed to be about guitars.  However, i thought it necessary not to leave this poor soul in ignorance and, in turn, vindicate my point with evidence.  I did so in a rather lengthy post.  I suppose i should have suspected the outcome, but i was surprised and quite amused (i was laughing my ass off at this point) to find i was yet again assailed by vitriolic comments.  Within minutes i was kicked off of the site.  It is all rather pathetic that they got so incredibly offended at such a stupid thing, and futhermore that they took my genera mentality to be troublemaking.  However, nonetheless i proceeded to laugh my silly face off at the results of my unexpected masterful accomplishment.  I had managed to offend an entire online community with two stupid posts that were not directed at anybody until i decided to DEFEND my point.  I suppose one finds genius in the strangest of places, i find it amusing, and i realize all you may not.

In anycase i thought that forum of all forums would be a lot more relaxed about such things, however, i am yet again disappointed.  I was in good spirits all of yesterday because of how ridiculous the whole thing was, how $%&#in stupid the general population is over there, and how ridiculous the whole site is rigged up: an intricate network of in-profile posting abilities, in-profile negative and positive point additions, and several other ridiculous things such as a 'thanking' system.  I was not particularly enamoured to the site, however, something doesn't sit quite right with me about it, so i thought i would write this post as a therapeutic kind of deal.

NOW, on a kind of similar note, i came to wonder about my behavior on this forum.  I have become quite attached to the online community here, as much as someone can be attached to an online entity that is.  So it got me wondering, am i comparatively tame on this site, or has this site, by way of the good natured community mellowed me out?  I would say in a sense, yes.  And clearly not in some cases, such as this incident with Sevenstring.org as my hotheaded self got the better of me.

I am sure some (or many) of you have experienced a couple my rants on here, few that they are compared to some other online communities, TRUST ME.  My temper gets the better of me on many occasions, and there have been several more notable ones on here, some of which my rhetoric was VERY poorly executed and thus my points where wholly abortive - it happens sometimes in a fit of irritation or the need to prove a point (without thinking it through fully).  And as it stands, i appreciate that you have all put up with my slight stupidities every once and again, especially those occasions where i make a total ass out of myself due to shaky wording, or off topic rants etc.  I am further glad that i haven't gotten kicked off for this activity yet, though compared to some other places it is rather subdued.  I rather like you blokes and it would be ashame to ruin this well of information about guitars and furthermore the sarcastic and joking miens of you all to boot.

So i really don't expect anybody to comment at this, but feel free to say anything you like.  Again, this was more of a pensive, therapeutic post.  Don't really need any sympathy as this is easily remedied with a little tinkering, and i still find the whole ordeal quite amusing, but if you really wish to pay your respects, as it were, feel free.

It's very easy to get stuck into a full-scale row online, that much is true.

This place is mellow, that much is true. I can't remember any major bust-ups occuring, at all. Compared with a few other places I post...

Take Fastfude, A NI Music Board. This place had a thirty odd-page slanging match that started with "Bass. Fingers or Plectrum". I'm not joking, either. hundreds upon hundreds of posts of sheer vituperative hatred, from that innocent starting point.

There's no trolls here, I think that's the thing.

I think this place definitely has calming effect, mainly as a byproduct of the air of wisdom that floats around this place.

I know when I first joined a while ago, I was (in no uncertain terms) an idiot. I still am, but just less so.

The way in which you defend your position plays quite a major part in whether you'll come across as a pain in the arse or someone who knows their stuff (I should know!) And perhaps more importantly, defending your position is sometimes simply futile.

I understand the humour of your situation and can relate.
The biggest problem with a forum of this sort and the others is that oftentimes things are misinterpreted or come across in a way that was not intended. Obviously it is a bit more difficult to express yourself the way you may intend over the internet. If it was done face to face, it may come across in a completely different manner.
Anyway, it is what it is. A forum full of information about guitars and related matters. That's why I use it, to feed my horrible addiction. :)

i've got into a few before on other forums, usually its a simple misundertsanding because of a language barrier or the nature of the internet

some forums are just more good natured than others and it does tend to come down to good, but not too strict moderation.... which is what i think we have here

I feel for you. It happens all the time on the internet that someone takes what you say out of context and then when you try to explain or defend it, you're seen as stubborn or trouble making. It's really quite frustrating when you're in trouble for saying something and then the topic gets locked, for being off-topic, before you have a chance to properly explain your position. It's a major flaw of the internet.

I tend to express myself more bluntly than I actually mean it. A form of exagreration for effect, I guess, and some people see that as arrogance or "elitism". For instance I'd say "Clapton sucks" when what I really mean is "I don't like Clapton", and I consider it a given that though expressed as a fact, it's obviously an opinion because a such thing IS a matter of opinion. But some people seem to think that means I want Clapton wiped off the face of the earth and have his memory forever errased from the minds of humankind.
Once people have formed an opinion about you, it's very hard to change that, even if they only base it on a misunderstanding in the first place.

My theory is that people get a lot braver over the internet and so start to see their value judgements as fact in a way they would never do in reality. This leads to problems like yours.

do you really want to go back to a forum that kicked you off for something so petty? - sounds like a pretty small-minded place to hang out imo.

Most forums are absolute shite holes.

Let me explain - It all boils down to a few individuals gaining huge influence by recognition, which is gained by just mass PR - Similar to TO, Phil King, Dave etc.

Now - When these influencial characters begin to abuse their reputable status - Others jump on the bandwagon, and it turns from 1 guy trying to be an arsehole - Because he can - And turns into 100 people trying to join in with their e-mate.

Its pathetic - Agressive, and really makes me hate forums.

Thankfully, the names mentioned are great guys, and the attitude on this forum is very liberal, and as such we get on lovely =)

Its all fine around here I think, apart from a certain someone, that begins with I, and ends in ndySmith :P
Well in all honesty theres no problems at all, even Indy's worst are usually tasteful (heh, well just picking on Indy as he is the nearest person that can qualify as knowing me off of BKP, kind of)

I guess with t'internet you have to remember things can read differently to what they sound like when you type them.
And those that are from foreign are very fluent as it is, so there are no hiccups with translation there.
