Author Topic: How do you deal with logistics/packaging for rehearsals? (Read 3211 times)

Well this is more of a practical topic. Usually, people share rehearsal rooms with other bands who are more or less reliable when it comes to treating other peoples' gear with respect. Also most cannot afford duplicate rigs.

So what we'll mostly end up doing is lug stuff back and forth between rehearsal space and home. On top of that you'll have beers, CDs, Scores or whatever to carry.

How do you manage this?

Personally I have like an unwritten rule that I only walk once to and from my car, so this is what I do:

FX board comes into an old (huge) suitcase, with all other loose stuff like power cables, mp3 player for doublechecking cover arrangements etc.
Guitar is in a backpack gigbag.

So I end up walking with a 20 Kg Head in one hand, 15Kg Fx and stuff in the other hand and a 4 Kg guitar on my back. This is tough but just manageable.

So the only thing i have duplicate are cabs.

How do you guys deal with these issues?

I have a rehearsal room at home so I don't have to carry that often. When I do have to transport my gear............:

1 amp, 1 cab, 1 case with FX, cables n' stuff, 1 case with mics, harps, straps, more cables and a guitar stand, 1 mic stand, 1 music stand (when needed) and at least one guitar.

No way I can carry all that in a single run.

Mercifully, I found a practice space with the same amp that I use anyway thrown in for free. It's a lot nicer than the rat-infested toilet we used to go to as well.

The inclusion of a kettle etc. for making tea is a pure bonus too.

They are distributed by Warwick - your local dealer should be able to get you one. Failing that I can get them.....but it's all extra shipping as I would then have to ship it to you.

I just get my bandmates to help out and drag all my stuff into the basement where we rehearse, i'm always lugging 2 guitars, my H&K Statesman, my Mesa/Boogie Mark IV combo and an effects rack/box with me.
I usually grab the guitars, our drummer does the Statesman, Bassboy drags along the Mark IV and our lead guitar guy gets the fairly light effects rack, because we need his delicate touch intact :roll:

In my case, beer is non existant before or during practise, and afterwards we just go to a nearby pub, so we don't deal with that, and we have a PC in there that houses enough MP3's to have years worth of material that we could listen to and cover, and it also has all the space we could need to record entire albums.
If only we had some Mics... :oops:

An idea in your case would be either 2 trips *not to your liking probably, but hey, it does save you from unwanted complications*, asking your bandmates to help out *and help them out as well, of course, fair trade*, or get one of those mega sturdy travel cases for your effects, then gaffer tape it on top of the cab and carry it up the stairs that way, that's what i do with my lead guitarists' travel case filled with stomboxes.

Backpack with pedals and cables and power supply.

Guitar in gigbag on my back

Tiny Terror in it's handbag.

Done.

Pedals get dumped on the floor, only use two so it's not a big mess, and relying on public transport/other guitarists Hyundi means everything has to be carryable.

My band rarely rehearses these days due to a hell of a lot of gigs and work pressure which is not necessarily a good thing but when we do, we all more or less bring our gigging rigs (we have rehearsed at one of the guys house with the PA set up already). We do need to get some new material together though as we are getting bored.

I used to take a few trips to and from the car. 1 for guitars - 1 in each hand. Then my head in one hand and pedalboard with cables etc in the other. Then the last is my cab, which is pretty heavy so I dont like to have anything in the other hand for that.

I keep the lions share of my equipment at our practise rooms - head, cab, camera case with cables in - and only take my guitar(s) and pedalboard with me.

Problem is that when I do a gig, I have to load ALL my shite into a Corsa. It's like a game of Tetris.
