Pink Floyd Tones? (long...)
« on: March 25, 2008, 08:33:49 AM »
Hi guys,

Thanks for taking the time to read my (long) post. I'm in that typical newbie position of not knowing where to start choosing a pickup. I'm an old hand with Duncans, but I need your advice to help me get into BKPs, especially as they'll be a hefty investment for me. I'm looking for two humbuckers to replace the '59s in my Eclipse 2. I emailed Tim, and he suggested a calibrated Mule set, but I'm wanting to try to make sure I make the right call first time... I'm sure you all understand.

I'm a Pink Floyd fanatic, so a priority for me is achieving that Floyd tone (which I know is hampered by not using single-coils); but I also play a bit of classic rock in the vein of Bob Seger, and I'm quite fond of fingerpicking. It's really, really, important to me that the pickups are balanced to give a useable split tone, and that the bridge are shades apart rather than world's apart. I like to use the split position for more punchy cleans, and for fingerpicking (to give that bit of extra attack).

Bridge Pickup: I prefer pickups with a bit of character (like SH12s) as opposed to super-clean sounds like, say, a Dimebucker. Heat isn't a major concern for me, as long as it's a bit hotter than the neck.

Neck Pickup: I prefer a bit of a cleaner pickup (like a '59) in the neck, but I find Jazzes far too warm...

Anyways, I hope I haven't included too much extraneous info, and thanks heaps in advance for your help and suggestions :)

-Liam

Well you have a humbucker guitar but are looking for single coil sounds to do a proper gilmour or sth.

I had good experiences with VHIIs in my Singlecut SE, actually there are some clips around posted by me where play the Wall and stuff.

What I would do is get a VHII and a Humbucker sized P90 from Tim, then you have the full humbucker monty as well as useable split sounds and a P90 in the neck sounds really gorgeous.

I was thinking a Mississippi Queen would be great for Gilmour as he used a P-90 equipped LP on The Wall.
It would also go to a characterful crunch if I am correct.

If you don't already know the MQ is a P-90 in a humbucker footprint.
I too use chicken as a measurement.

If you are interested in Pink Floyd tones, please contact Tim. He has developed a (modified Apache?) Strat set specifically for the classic Gilmour sound, but has not been officially released yet. You will be over the moon with the results, I think!

You really need a Strat to nail those tones. I would pick up a Strat or Strat copy and throw in these pups.

Thanks heaps for your advice, guys. I really appreciate it! I think I'll grab a VHII and MQ for the Eclipse, and start saving (and selling) for a strat :D

Yeah, Missippi Queen for the Les Paul-tones. (like ABITW Pt II solo for instance).

Thanks guys :D I've actually just bought an ESP Vintage plus:

It's coming with those Pickups (DiMarzio Super Distortion, SD SSL1m, DiM Chopper) installed, but also with the rest of the Duncan set to stick in, since I don't think the DiMarzios will be my cup of tea. I guess I'll ask Tim about the Floyd Apache set, but get a VHII and MQ if those aren't availale yet :)

I had a couple of general pickup questions, too... Am I right in my understanding that potting pickups is only of much use if you're putting a cover on, as a way of preventing the metal cover vibrating and causing a signal to be induced in the coils? That's to say, if I'm going to get uncovered pickups, is there much point getting them potted?

Also, what're your thoughts on the zinc steel backplates?

Thanks :D

I believe it's also beneficial for uncovered pickups, because it prevents microphonic feedback due to vibrations of the wire within the coils.

Great looking guitar by the way!  :D

Talk to Tim about the mod apache's for sure, but if not my wife has been playing Floyd on an Irish Tour set and that seems to work well, I think that strat is our best sounding guitar (we have 4 with BK's).

Gaah. I'd got my SG-o-caster all planned out, and then you mention these pickups. Guess I know what I'm going to put in it now... :)
