The singer isn't Japanese. It's Jeremy Colson. Vai's and Marty's drummer.

The morale of the story: don't let drummers sing.

The vocalist deserves to be ritually disemboweled

It's a lousy recording - the guitar tone is atrocious.

It's a disgusting butchery of a very fine song.

BUT

That solo still rocks :D

God, it's horribly produced.  Those shitety vocals are so up-front and the guitars, drums and bass are just a mush in the background - until the solo kicks in.

Come back Max Norman!  And I wish Marty was still in Megadeth (although I have yet to hear Chris Broderick, to be fair).

To be fair, the rest of his solo stuff is so far superior to his work in Megadeth it's not even comparable. Even though I just compared it. Anyway, carry on.

Really?

I've heard his pre-'Deth solo record, & his work with Jason Becker in Cacophony, but apart from the "Scenes" album (which I didn't enjoy at all) I've not heard any of his other stuff.

Can you recommend any of his other solo work to check out?

True OBsession  1996
Music for Speeding   2002

He did a lot of work with japanese rock/pop groups, i only recall one called Puffy, which is like a happy-go-lucky punk pop group I think. I don't recommend you to listen to any of it though, your brain may explode.

His TV show is awesome though, it's called mr.heavy metal, it features guitar duels and stuff by him and guest stars!
God how I wish in my wildest wetdreams that there could be a show like this on laMeTV or any other channel outside of japan.

here's a clip   http://youtube.com/watch?v=LgLSk_ZKv1k

Now that's a $%&#ing awesome idea, Big Deth!
much better than singing drummers IMO (no offense to drummers.)

Dragon's Kiss (which I supose is he pre-deth one you meant), Introduction, True Obsessions, and Loudspeaker are very good albums in my book. Music for Speeding was kinda lost on me. A little too Jap-punk  :P He completely redeamed himself with Loudspeaker though, that one is brilliant.
But then again, I think Dragon's Kiss is incredible and has better riffs and solos then Megadeth so if you didn't like that album, chances are you're not gonna like the rest either. I'd give Loudspeaker a shot though.

(and I love Scenes. But I supose you it's a love-it or leave-it kinda album)

Edit: ROCK FUJIYAMA!! Everyone needs to see that. Kerry King was on that show and he almost seemed human.

Hmm.. seems like he's been making too much J-Pop.

Music over here is engineered with vocals right up front, and with just enough of the other instruments to discern some kind of melody, even rock bands have their guitars so far back that you barely even know they're there.

It's primarily mixed to sound good on a convenience store's background music system and as mobile phone ring tones (this isn't just my personal viewpoint, it was stated by a Japanese mastering engineer in last December's "Sound Designer" magazine) it probably comes from the karaoke culture (this opinion is purely personal and heavily biased :P )
