PRS GAS alert
« on: April 13, 2008, 12:52:35 AM »
I went to visit Guitar village today to try out a guitar with a similar neck to Twinfans P90 Tokai SG. I tried a few out and thought the necks were to thick for me so couldn't really justify buying it (sorry Dave!). Just as I was about to go downstairs and leave I thought I would give a PRS Soapbar Satin a quick go. Basically I was there for at least another 20 minutes playing the guitar and thinking of ways I could buy it. I couldn't think of any way that I could afford it within at least the next 9 months.

To help put me out of my misery can someone tell me that these guitars are awful and not worth owning. Please

Start saving.

Aha! See what I did there! I didn't say it was bad, nor did I put you off getting the guitar! Aha! Nor did I say to save up for a guitar! Aha!

Cheers Dakine. Is that a 245 or 250? I'm not looking at these though as they are a bit out of my range!

Also - do I see Billy F Gibbons Rock and ROll gearhead in the background? I'll be ordering a copy ion a few days.

Just replied to your "humbucker in a 75 Tele" thread - and now I read this...

I think you need the PRS Soapbar!! (Sorry...) Leave the tele as is and save for this.

I tried one the other week at Turnkey in London. The feel of the guitar itself wasn't quite "me" but it was very very nice. It has probably helped push me towards a possible "MQs in my Epi SG" decision - thanks for reminding that I have actually played P90 style pickups and liked it a lot, I'd completely forgotten...

We tried the PRS for 10-15 mins, I also tried a Gibson 335, and a cherry Les Paul (my favourite of the three) - but I ended up elsewhere buying a Gibson Explorer (played that one for 45 minutes!)

It sounds to me like the PRS "spoke" to you - that's how I buy guitars. Doesn't matter how good they're meant to be, if it doesn't speak to me then it's not mine. Equally, when it does speak to me... (I can't seem to get that across to the missus, when she goes "why don't you try it?" - at least she was the one who got her plastic out at the end of the 45 minutes, what a lovely woman she is!)

Cheers fpor the Tele reply Andy - it is a nice humbucking tone that I am after. I was trying to get it without busting the bank but it looks as though not messing with the tele is the best thing to do. I'll be saving hard until I get a PRS!!!

Good stuff with getting your lady to pay for a guitar - this plan hasn't worked for me just yet!

Yeah, I must admit, I seem to be very lucky in my choice of spouse! (Or is it her choice of me?!)

Just to help your PRS GAS I've been playing my Mira for the last couple of hours.

It's just plain rocks.  Best guitar I've ever played, best tone I've ever had.

Awesome

Cheers Dakine - the 245 looks awesome.

Not sure why it is but I did convince myself it was the humbucker sound I was after but when I tried the soapbar it was way better than what I expected.

I know P90s are effectively single coils but why do they sound much meatier than a standard single coil? Do they have more windings hence the bigger size?

Here's a little extract from Wiki on P90s:
Quote
The P-90 is a single coil electric guitar pickup produced by Gibson since 1946. Having a more complex architecture and larger dimensions than Fender's single coils, it is occasionally mistaken for a humbucker. According to the Gibson website, "the lean and mean P-90 offers a stellar combination of high output and biting treble response."

Ian, I'm a fellow PRS GAS sufferer - the objects of my desire are a Tremonti Signature and an SC245. I was converted to PRS by playing a Custom 22 with a wide-thin neck and a Singlecut Satin Trem - I'd always thought of them as too 'showy' before. I now spend most of my spare time dreaming up new and creative ways in which I could possibly afford them, and I'm certainly not helped every time Dakine posts pics of his SC245.
