Good HB set for a 12-string?
« on: April 17, 2008, 05:54:29 AM »
Hi Peeps,
Has anyone got any advice for a HB set for a 12-string?  I'm really unsure which way to go.

The guitar is a Warmoth L5s Mahogany body/Maple Cap with Maple/Ebony neck. It will be used in 2 ways. Firstly for hauting droning picking patterns using reverb and echo effects, with just enough gain to break the sound up. Secondly, for some higher gain solos. Solo wise, I want a rich full sound - nothing shrill, brittle or too harsh. They'll be slower, longer sustaining types.

Key Requirements:

1. Good articulation and balance across the strings - important with so many strings.

2. A nice sweet  tone with rolled off highs - the extra octaves and Maple/Ebony neck will provide enough of those.  I'm not going for the jangly Rickenbacker sound.

3. Open-coils (I want to put an EMG-style flat black cover over the top to suit the guitar's aesthetics).

From all I've read on these forums, the Mule and Stormy Monday seem to be the ones that come up again and again...but the descitpion of the Mule mentions great bite.  Maybe rather than a matched pair, I need a good mix of something...

Hiya Pitchshifter,

I too am thinking Alinico II Stormy Mondays, not just because I love them as a pickup , but because ( as you mentioned ) - the E.Q. is even across the neck. Please note that I said "even" and not "one dimensional "

The highs of a S.M. are not really "rolled off" , but rather that they are sweeter sounding than other pickups I have heard - and the notes stay soft if you pick soft e.t.c. ,  the dynamics of your playing being well represented. I use my bridge pickup a lot more often now I have the set of S.Ms in my S.G. I mention this because if you want to manually roll off the highs a bit with the tone control for a slightly nasal or compressed sound - your picking remains clear and very sweet , not muddy.

I am also thinking that the ( default ) Alnico II magnet would be ideal - as the delivery is softer than my Alnico IV Mules - which do literally have a 'kick' behind the note - however tonally appealing that note is after the initial 'kick'. A softly picked note with SMs almost 'blooms' from under the finger, - or in my case heavy celluloid pick / or fingers.

The thing to watch out for in SMs ( to my ears ) - is the bass string response. They are almost 'loose' sounding - and certainly mellow. For me this is absolutely ideal for Jazzy Blues, but a different magnet may be indicated if you want the bass tighter than that (?).  However, I can imagine that with ebony fingerboard and the specs you gave, my money would go on the SMs - although I am sure owners of other ( less obvious ) types of  BKP will hopefully chip in .

Tim can do a flat (no holes) matte black cover for you if you are after 'all slugs' tones.

My vote goes for the Ceramic Warpig calibrated set just for the purpose of being difficult  .

Seriously though, the AII Stormy Mondays should serve you well as they are into Slash(of G'n'R fame)'s sound and your description reminded me of his 12-string tone on the Use Your Illusion videos.
I too use chicken as a measurement.

Hey Guys, thanks for those very thoughtful responses.

November Rain..yeah, that is a killer sound.  And it would be awesome if Tim could put together a matte black cover like that.

Good point on using the Tone Fourth Feline to cut-out the highs a bit.  Sweet is what I would like.

Oh, I meant to say the PG Blues also caught my attention with it's blurb about ambient haunting lead lines and delicate chording....

Just out of interest since we don't mention 12-strings very often, there's a picture in the Gallery forum of Tim's Gibson SG doubleneck, which has Alnico III Mules on the 12-string:
