Not the Messiah: Eric Idle's comic oratorio (I had to look up ) pastiche of Handel's Messiah based on The Life of Brian (IMO the funniest film ever made). I'm a big Python fan so I was always going to like this but it does start quite slow and the humour is often low key. However I though the music was great with 'We Love Sheep' getting big laughs from me. If you dislike Opera or The Python... avoid.

I love Python, but I dislike (post-Python) Eric Idle, and Opera.  So I'll avoid.

Watched A Perfect Getaway earlier.. rubbish! It was getting kind of interesting until the "twist" which ruined it as the script and characters completely changed from that point on in order for it to work. It was as though they expected you to have forgotten what happened earlier on

edit - just been watching a few episodes of the E4 comedy/drama called Misfits. It's actually pretty good - kinda like Heroes but better imo.

Recent films would be Sherlock and Predators

I was really surprised by the first - I saw a trailer and thought 'since when was sherlock holmes a martial arts expert action hero?' and expected it to be terrible, but Downey pulled of the ultra-intelligent but detached from reality and basically nuts character really well, and I enjoyed it a lot.

Predators was fine, even good, taken on its own merit, in isolation, but it was let down by the fact that at least 50% of the scenes and shots are pretty much right out of Predator, and it had so much opportunity to do what predator did with the buildup and the 'what the $%&# is going on, we're all gonna die' factor, but the predators really had no presence when they werent on the screen (as in predator, alien, aliens, even predator 2, theres a sense of continual manace from the monsters right through the film) and the characters took being dumped on an alien world and hunted by near-invoncible aliens much, much too easily.

It's all on 4OD but the fullscreen quality isn't amazing - http://www.channel4.com/programmes/misfits/4od#3018429

I really enjoyed Inception last night. Great vfx (but not overdone or tacky) and a good storyline :) Everyone in the cinema was like "what?!" at the ending, haha

edit - watched it again tonight as my parents wanted to go! Story is a lot easier to digest and make sense of 2nd time round.

Brothers - Good cast (Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman, Sam Shepard) in this soldier thought dead returns home... with consequences drama. I though it was OK but the story is too obvious, you can see what'll happen next a mile away. I think it's a remake, so the original is probably much better.

Micmacs (Micmacs à tire-larigot) - French language film by Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Delicatessen, Amelie) combination of oddball farce and heist caper is just too whimsical for its own good. Lovely visuals but the constant wacky-street-performance acting would be more suitable in a silent movie.

Precious - Also far from original storyline abused, overweight girl from the ghetto life turns round by an inspirational, compassionate teacher but I though it was fantastic. The acting was incredible (even Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz are good, particularly Carey) with the Mother and Daughter being played to perfection.

On the TV front, just finished Curb Your Enthusiasm - Season 7 with is very funny but I can't help but think the show is past its peak, it's just not as funny as it was. However Season 7 is essential viewing for Seinfeld fans as it features a fictional reunion show. As a big Seinfeld fan, it was really something to see the cast back together again.
A generous heart, kind speech and a life of service & compassion are the things which renew humanity

I saw this at the London Film Festival last year.... very disappointing.  Looks wonderful as always, likeable (but woefully underdeveloped) characters, but the arms-dealing-is-bad message is so ludicrously simplistic it's almost insulting.  And, like A Very Long Engagement, I think the film lacks heart somehow - so different from Amelie.

I quite like Dany Boon though - he reminds me of Jacques Tati in a way.

I've been revisiting more stuff on Blu-ray - The French Connection (I & II), Hellboy (I & II), Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer

I also watched a piece of worthless, boring tripe called Kung Fu Dunk - I was expecting a basketnall version of Shaolin Soccer (or even Battlefield Baseball...) but it misses the mark by a million miles.

Yeah, Hans Zimmer always does awesome soundtracks :)

Saw Toy Story 3 today and thought it was great. 3D works better now I have glasses for watching films etc. Fast action bits are still blurry though but the overall effect was a lot more convincing!

yes, quite funny, but as many "modern" movies it lacks the correct timing... too videoclip oriented, as usual.

I've just been watching Daredevil.  I hated it when I saw it in the cinema, but I love the director's cut to bits.  It really is a completely different film.

Run Lola Run - I really didn't like this when it first started but toward the end I got into it and thought it was pretty good overall :) I mostly love how it looks. The english dubbing is awful though, should have found a version with subtitles really.

Oh yes you should!  Was it a download then, not a DVD?

I watched Hot Tub Time Machine last night. I didn't laugh that much but I had a chuckle. It is what it is.

Also had another watch of Lost In Translation & The Goodfellas. They're still great after 9 and 20 years.
