Yeah, I quickly averted my eyes after I started reading those posts, but I couldn't avoid all of it....  :|

It'll probably be quite a while before I see it, though, and I watch so many films I tend to forget stuff quite easily.  So my mind will hopefully be blank by then!

ah bugger, its hard to have a thread like this without the odd spoiler sneaking in

tbh, it could be interpreted in different ways so dont take what we said at face value

Well I saw it coming because I'd already read the book! Good film though but I actually preferred the book. I still can't fully make my mind up about the ending anyway. Oh and the last line of the film isn't in the book as far as I'm aware.

I've just watched Gomorrah, about the criminal activities of the Camorra in southern Italy.  Powerful stuff!

yeah same here. Don't worry wez (and Lew), you didn't mean it, and I'm sure I've posted the odd spoiler which I didn't realise was a spoiler either. I'll be more careful in future, though. :)

I watched 21 last night. Not bad at all actually. Some things that didn't make sense - Kevin Spacey's character previously being banned from Las Vegas and then brazenly walking around watching his students was a little odd.

Apparently the book this is based on is also very good. I may give it a read.
I think I hate being indecisive.

Great film, a real antidote to the usual 'glamour' gangster films.

Just finished Lourdes a French language religious satire. It was absolutely amazing, just my type of film. The acting is great, very natural and subtle, no show boating. The script is sparse which emphasise the odd behaviour of the characters. It also features Léa Seydoux, who is very easy on the eye, http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3955394816/ch0157116

You, sir, are a man of taste!  :D   I saw Lourdes at the LFF last year and loved it to bits.

You called it a satire, and I saw it that way too - in the gentlest possible way - but I think the film actually leaves you completely free to form your own impression.  If you're sceptical about "miracles" it's satire, but I imagine a true believer could watch it and see it completely differently.  Or you could see it almost as a documentary!  And the ending manages to be happy and achingly sad at the same time.

yeah, 21 was alright, but i was a bit concerned about how the casinos were almost portrayed as the "good guys"... o_O

"All these nice mafia-run casinos are just trying to make an honest buck by completely playing the odds and hiring goons to beat the cr@p out of anyone who makes any money, and then these fly college boys who are actually smart enough to beat the system without actually cheating AT ALL evilly come along to try to get a share of the profits! The monsters!"

What is wrong with card counting anyway? :?

I haven't seen that french film but you seem to have linked to a completely different person in imdb (unless she has a couple of pseudonyms).

Speaking of non-english language stuff, I watched wallander on bbc4 on saturday, it was very good.

that's what i mean. I mean it's not cheating (like hiding cards up your sleeve is), it's just something which is perfectly fine and fair (imo) but which cuts into the casinos' profits. :?

tbh i think it would be hard to play cards regularly and not start thinking about the cards that have gone before and the cards you dont have... its not a big jump to actually be 'counting' them

Card counting schemes typically involve 3 people, which is certainly against the spirit of things. If you are somehow smart enough to count by yourself then yeah, I don't see anything wrong with it.

^ yeah, that's true, i mean if there are 15 of you to let you do it then that's different.

I'm not entirely sure if there's much spirit in it, though.
