Finally saw John Huston's The Asphalt Jungle over the weekend. Wow, what a movie. I can see why people call it the best crime film ever made. Comfortably as good as anything Scorsese has ever done and for 1950 pretty much peerless I'd think (maybe allowing for Touch of Evil). If you like films like Treasure of the Sierra Madre (another Huston movie) then I think you'll love this. The story, the human struggle, the dialogue, the film noir styling and Marilyn Monroe make it one of the best movies I've ever seen. I'm pretty disgusted with myself that it's taken until now for me to get around to seeing it.
Oh, and Philly, and I'm glad the Blu-Ray of Black Narcissus is up to snuff. Jack Cardiff was one of the true greats of cinematography and deserves it. All of which means I have to watch The African Queen ASAP. John Huston and Jack Cardiff working on the same movie sounds like dynamite to me.
