I too enjoyed the Hobbit, although not 5* enjoyment.  The 3D 48fps was great - but ruined by the darkness of the 3D glasses.  However, it was tooooooo loooooooooong

I hear Lady Vengeance is pretty good as well, been on my to watch list for a while.
It wasn't a mistake, it was chromaticism, I swear.

that prompted almost as loud a groan as my stomach after a Christmas pig out!
I think I hate being indecisive.

Hobbit -enjoyable but most of the stretching out seems to be to give it continuity with LOTR, and this annoyed me because it could have been a good film its own right

setting up a big bad character who i dont see how they can reveal till he is shown to be bad in the twin towers.

music - we get that its referencing something that happens in LOTR - using the exact same music to shove the references in our faces seemed a bit lazy.

Jack Reacher - Yes, Tom Cruise is totally miscast, but we're stuck with him so I tried to put the books out of my mind.   The film is a bit too talky at times, but the action bits are good.

Hi Philly. I was staggered when I learned that Mr Cruise was playing Reacher. I shall reserve judgement until I see it though.

I've only read three or four of them, but yes, the books are good IMO.

They're not great literature, one book isn't hugely different from the next, they're just straightforward action/detective stories with a very strong central character.  And they move at a good pace because the writing style is quite simple and direct (but not in an idiotic, rubbishy way like James Patterson!  :P )

thanks philly :) Yeah that's what I like in thriller/detective novels. I'm not really expecting them to be culturally significant, i just want them to work as good thrillers.

I've read all but the latest book Dave. As Philly says, not great literature in the traditional sense but very entertaining and a favourite of mine. I was pleased when I heard they were making a film but amazed to hear about TC playing the role. I am sure he is very good but it struck me as odd- for ages there were stories that another apparently well known actor would be playing the role but I cannot remember who as I take little interest in such things.

I've been trying to think of an actor suitable for the role, but it's not easy!  Dolph Lundgren would fit the physical description in the books, but I don't think he's a good enough actor and he's just not right, somehow.  Rutger Hauer, maybe, if he was 20 years younger?

Actually, Ray Stevenson (Punisher: War Zone) would be just about perfect, but probably not a big enough name.

Believe it or not, when I read the books I actually imagine Reacher as in in-shape version of James Gandolfini from The Sopranos.  He has the right sort of presence, calm but with that air of potential violence about him....

thanks mr 38th :) As i said, that's what i want in thrillers... being exciting and having a good plot take precedence for me over it actually being well written

Liam Neeson should have been Reacher :)
