Nailbomb Split (Not metal at all) UPDATED
« on: April 25, 2008, 07:00:27 PM »
Ok so this is a cover i'm doing for my as music technology coursework. Its not usually the type of music i record so it what interesting to see was sounds I could get out of the nailbomb.

It's a maroon 5 song and there's no vocals on it yet. I haven't mixed or edited it at all, I just changed a few levels to make it listenable.

The choruses are the nailbomb split, i was going for more of a thinner singlecoil-y sound than the full thick 'bomb sound we all know and love (the solo is full out gain and humbucker though :P )

It's a been a bit of a rush tbh. Did the drums in an hour on sunday, this is second take. Rhythm guitars on tuesday after school for an hour and a half. Bass on wednesday after school (had to teach him it and record it in 45 mins, but hes pro so he picked it up and added loads of stuff in minutes.) Winged the guitar solo at morning break today 8). And wolfed down my lunch and recorded the nylon string for the verse at lunch break.

Sooo, anyway, i'd like to know what you all think of the tone. I think its come out rather well, considering the pickup and the amp (h & k warp x - for metal).

Oh and also, any production tips you can offer would be greatly appreaciated. I'm the guinea pig for music tech at our school so i'm on my own. My "teacher" is the head of music who just makes sure i hit the deadlines. So yeah any tips you could offer would be awesome.

Thanks a lot! x

Well, coming from a fellow tech head, that sounds pretty good to me. The only thing I would say is that the bass is slightly too high in the mix, and a bit muddy to my ears, and the drums may need a tiny bit of reverb just to get them to sound not so direct.

Hope that makes sense.

Nice playing though. Like it.

Well this shows the Nailbomb is well capable of other genres than Metal. :)

Nice playing.

I second the above post by Vulgar.

Just an update incase anyone wondered what it would sound like with the vocals on.

It's my sister singing btw :)

The attachment in the first post has been updated and you can also find it here -

Also, for the 10cc lovers out there, I had to do this arrangement of a pop tune too. And i chose "I'm Not In Love". There's no guitars, but i'd be interested to know what you think. It's a sort of jazz vibes variations thing. Think Keith Jarrett when he was with Gary Peac--k. It's not quite done yet, I need to play in the piano outro I've got planned.

Thanks again,

P.S. Soundclick seems to be REALLY slow today.

The bass sounds a bit too loud and boomy to me. Rest of it sounds pretty good though, especially when the overdriven guitar comes in :) Great lead playing as well.

Yeah I'm sorting the bass out at school at bit later (study leave atm). On the genelecs at school it sounds fine but everywhere else its too loud and too bassy. Guess I need to start checking my mixes out on shitety iPod headphones to check its completely user friendly.

Thanks for the compliments

I think the acoustic guitars are very muddy and way to bass heavy, needs a high pass filter at around 350-400Hz. The bass guitar just needs a mild boost at 250, and high pass at 125, the electric guitars need yet more high pass at 150 ish, and are slightly too loud. If I were you I'd make the lead vocals only slightly louder by 1-2 db and have more compression on it, maybe some 100ms delay to make it more 'in your face'?

I like the guitar tone a lot, especially the guitar solo but I would put very mild delay on the rhythm guitars to make them more in the background, or use automation and turn them down for the solo.

If you disagree with any of this then please tell me.
