Why does Macca make the news?

Arguments based on influence are totally irrelevent imo.

So what if the beatles shaped the music industry, if they hadn't someone else would have, and it might have been even better than what we have now.

Nope, sorry - don't understand Beatles/Macca bashing.

3 words. 'The. Frog. Chorus.' :)
Seriously, that's the reason why God chose to inflict Heather Mills on him. :)

Being slightly more serious... who was it who wrote the line
'The only thing you done was Yesterday'? :)

A mate of mine once pointed out that, were anyone to level rants such as this to his face, hes more than entitled to turn round and say

"Well what have you done with your life?"

I'm not a fan, but you have to tip your hat to his contributions.

Illogical, captian

They did re-shape the music industry. And gave western music a shot in the arm it sorely needed (they were for example the first people in europe to use the Dorian scale since the 14 century).

And its not like science/technology where if its there to be found it will be by someone. Creative endevours dont work like that. They depend on the people involved and nothing more.

Example:
If you love a band who were influenced by Metallica
Metallica were influenced by Black Sabbath
Black Sabbath were influenced by The Beatles
So indirectly Paul Mccartney will have had an effect.

yeah, that's pretty much how i feel. i'm not much a fan of the beatles, but most of my favourite bands were (or their favourite bands were)... i guess i appreciate what they did for the industry, even if i'm not much fussed on their songs or style of music.

Were they using it intentionally though? I didn't know any of them had musical training.

Totally agree with this (except the Dorian bit, I have no feckin' clue about that).

It's impossible to know one way or the other, of course, but I don't believe we'd have a music industry anything like the one we've had for the last 40-odd years without the Beatles.  Their success, influence and impact on popular culture was totally unprecedented, and nothing like it will ever happen again because nowadays the industry is so much bigger and more fragmented.  And it's become part of the establishment.

(There was Elvis, of course, but by the time the Beatles came along he'd already lost all his early edginess and was making bland music and boring family-friendly movies)

I'm not the biggest Beatles fan and I think most of McCartney's solo output is nothing more than sugary bilge.  But I wouldn't for a second question his iconic status or his right to it.

And while we're on the subject, why the hell hasn't Ringo got a knighthood?

The Beatles were inspired by early rockabilly and blues guys. Carl Perkins among others.

All modern music can be dated back to some guy sitting on his porch singing and playing 'That's Allright Mama'.

Well really everyone is just an imitation except for the old cavemen banging rocks.

If it weren't for them we'd still be listening to birdsong.

I love the Beatles. Truly amazing songwriting, excellent production for the time and snazzy facial hair.

Fair enough, the 'Macca' thing is retarded. He comes across as a knob, great musician though- he freaking wrote Elenor Rigby!

I really don't understand peoples need to be vitriolic about certain subjects, especially online. Fair enough Roo you don't like teles or the Beatles, we now know that- give it a freaking break. It's like a retarded midget- neither big nor clever. Keep it to yourself.
