As much as I don't like a lot of Beatles stuff, anyone who could stand that mentalist for more than 10 minutes (let alone marry her) is a hero in my books.

I love the Beatles. Truly amazing songwriting, excellent production for the time and snazzy facial hair.

Fair enough, the 'Macca' thing is retarded. He comes across as a knob, great musician though- he freaking wrote Elenor Rigby!

I really don't understand peoples need to be vitriolic about certain subjects, especially online. Fair enough Roo you don't like teles or the Beatles, we now know that- give it a freaking break. It's like a retarded midget- neither big nor clever. Keep it to yourself.

Hi Badger,

you might have made a slight typo in your sig, there...

A mate of mine once pointed out that, were anyone to level rants such as this to his face, hes more than entitled to turn round and say

"Well what have you done with your life?"

I'm not a fan, but you have to tip your hat to his contributions.

The man is a very talented musician and songwriter.
You can't knock him for what he's done. When some of you have got older and the metal thing starts to subside somewhat and then the you may get the beatles. There is so much of their material out there some of it will connect with you. Besides it's not his fault the media always put him in the spotlight.

I think its hard in the modern context for people to properly understand the effect the Beatles had on music ... nowadays to young ears they just sound like another '60s band because those ears aren't hearing the music in its context - the impact is lost (or diluted) because the Beatles already happened 40 years ago.

But talk to anyone who was alive when they 'happened' and you cannot reasonably argue that they were not one of the most influential acts of the 20th century.

McCartney was a fundamental part of that. I can see how he might wind some people up, but you can't deny the man has talent. You can not like him or his music, but some respect for talent is due. And he has a right to earn a living like the rest of us :)

I was in two minds whether to even bother to comment but I will. It is not compulsory to like the Beatles or Paul but to dismiss his stuff is a little churlish. So you don't like him or his music-fine, dont watch him, don't listen to him. Instead why don't you go and see if you can come up with some great songs  cos the world of music could really do with it.

It was deliberate. I love teles like a gangsta loves his hos. And my single humbuckered tele rocks harder than you. FACT.

It doesn't matter how much you say "FACT", you play a bulbous, teletubby-like guitar and you think it makes you look cool, and you can't take the truth, which is that it makes you look like a proper batty boy.

Fact.

As to the other posts - thanks for bringing those points to the discussion - more is always better!

I wasn't around when the Beatles were playing, and i wasn't swept up in the "mania". I was around when Oasis did much the same thing, and I have to say I hated them too, so I've no doubt that I'd have hated the Beatles had I been around then, also.
Regarding "what have I done?" Good point, and very well made. In music, not nearly enough, and not even close to what I wanted to. Maybe I haven't had the lucky break yet, maybe I spent too long studying other things, and spend too long in traffic (hell that's true!). 'Maybe's don't cut it.  No excuses, I'm not a famous musician yet. In fact, I never will be, because my favoured music is not mainstream.

This brings me neatly to another point, just because they were mainstream, is that a good enough reason in itself to revere them and make them "godlike" in history? Not in my opinion. They should be judged for what they did, not how they were received. They fall short in my judgement.

My reason for starting this thread was because every day it seems that the BBC is running some story about McCartney. Why? WHY? No-one seems to be able to provide a satisfactory answer to this question.

Why don't I just give it a rest? Well when they give it a f***ing rest, I'll give it a f***ing rest tbh.
Vitriolic, maybe. Tw*t, maybe, but I'm as entitled to my opinions as anyone else, and others here seem to agree with me, while others don't. None of us is *right* or *wrong*, they're only opinions, so get over it.
After all, this thread is in the "off topic" off topic forum!

I'm glad that there have been so many responses here, it shows the strength of feeling on the subject on both sides of the camp. I for one love Marmite, by the way.

Keep it coming, and keep it reasonable, please.

The simple answer to that is that he's one of the most famous (and beloved, FWIW) men in the world.  So when he does something - like have a messy divorce or play a big home-town concert - it makes the news.

Isn't that how news works?

He has a symbiotic relationship with the media. Just like Amy Winehouse and Pete Doherty.

They need someone to fill pages and sell papers, and he needs PR. For them its a win win situation, and although the rest of the country plays along like sheep it seems to work.

I like alot of what the Beatles did during their career, especially on the studio side of things, but I really do believe that Paul McCartney has written nothing of any merit since the Beatles split up, but am a fan of the Lennon/McCartney pairing.

As for the news reports etc about him, if it annoys me, I just turn the TV off or put the newspaper down. It's simple :)

would be surprised if the macca media circus tones down the publicity for a while. the man is clearly no fool. as we all know he is a multi-millionaire and hardly needs the publicity for his latest project in the same way amy winehouse and pete doherty do... my theory is the only reason he carries on doing music is because he likes it! :)

as for post-beatles output, i suppose few dislike "live and let die" - a great song in many ways.

Either that or the man is an egomaniac.

Or he has serious superiority/self worth issues.

This has got childish really quickly. I was trying to be flippant, but it failed. I never once said I looked cool with a telecaster- I have my reasons for enjoying playing them, looks is a minority factor. Comments about someone sexuality? I expected better from this forum, I really did.

Can I just say a coupla things...
1. I'm 39, how much older will I need to get before I lose interest in metal?
2. The first 'proper' album I bought (all those years ago) was Sgt Pepper... At one point, I could tell you which album any given Beatles song was on. Elenor Rigby was, for a verrry long time my favourite song.

It's just that sometimes I've been listening to 'How do you sleep?' too much... :)
