Given the choice, a 1x12 or a 2x10?
« on: June 23, 2008, 05:25:22 PM »
So, pretty much as the title suggests.  Given the choice, would you guys opt for a 1x12 extension cabinet or a 2x10?
It's for my Laney, I want to get a matching ext. cab and I'm not really sure what the benefits of either would be (Laney do matching 1x12/2x10 cab).
I suppose a bit fuller/more bass with a 1x12 and more chime/top-end with the 2x10?
Anyway, what would you go for?

1x12 every time :) i think 12" just sound as an amp is supposed to sound.

I tend to agree about the 1x12, just I've never used 10" speakers.
So, think I'll stick with the consensus and get the 1x12.

don't know how familiar you are with a 1x12 ported cab(a Thiele, for ex.), but they sound as big as a 4x12 in my book

Good mix with an existing 2x10".

A 1x15?  Madness I say.

I'm not familiar at all with ported cabs.  I'll do a bit of research.

If you DO decide on a 1x10 the Celestion G10 vintage is the best all rounder I've heard, it has a very big sound, and the bass is never flabby or annoyingly overpowering.

I take it your current amp is a 1x12?  I'd match it with a 1x12 cab.  Nice 1/4 stack then  :)

Yeah, current setup is a 1x12 combo.
You're right though, would be a nice little mini stack  :)
I think I'll go for the 1x12 all said and done.

Out of curiosity, and conversations sake, why would a guitarist go for a 2x10 or 10" speakers overall?  Just for the reason stated above, punchier top-end/mid-range?

They are quite punchy, and by no means a lesser option.  They're nice and compact, therefore lighter, making them easier to lug around.

Fender amps have used a variety of different sized speakers since the 50s, but Marshall started the standard 12inch size with their JTM45 half stacks.  It was what they could get at the time, and the legend was born.

Personally, I'm going to get a Fender-style 2x12 combo at some point as they sound lovely for cleans.
