BKP bridge for Black Crowes Tele?
« on: July 21, 2008, 02:21:27 PM »
I've got the GAS itches again, and I'm thinking Rich Robinson of the Black Crowes.  Neck 'bucker on a vintage bridged tele.

Alnico II Stormy is a given for the neck, but what for the bridge?  I know nothing about single coil pickups for Teles, so what'll match the neck 'bucker well and give that big, open, crunchy Keef/Robinson Tele tone?

A Flat 50 Blackguard?

I've been listening A LOT to Heaven's Basement on these last weeks and right today I was driving back from the university thinking "that sounds a lot like Black Crowes, but they seem to get everything from the 70's to late 90's, instead of the straight 70's influence" :D
coincidentally, I just discovered that they use BKP's, apparently the Riff Raff

I don't know sheet about single coils, though :P
I'd probably install a humbucker bridge and a push-pull for coil splitting

I was thinking Boss or Brown Sugar so as not to get dominated by the neck humbucker.

I think Phil King mentioned that the Flat 50 set was comparable to the Boss in terms of warmth and output, but my memory may be playing tricks.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Like many others, I'm working on hearsay on tele pups at the moment
But my understanding is that the original bridge in the esquires etc was a bit of a beast, that the Piledriver is somewhat based on this, and (I'm hoping!) that the 50s Blackguards are barking up the same tree... (I think PhilKing might be the source of my "knowledge" as well)

Whether it can compete with the SM, I really don't know, though. My experience of sticking a humbucker in the neck of a tele some years ago makes me a little wary about attempting it again!! (this was not BKPs though)

I'm using the Pile Driver wth a Slowhand neck, and a Brown Sugar with an old Gibson/Silvertone mini HB.  I've heard the Boss with a Sormy Monday but I like the Brown Sugar sound (didn't want to put BS because the censor might get me!).  The Flat Pole BG bridge is the early Tele sound, and is a great pickup, but the Stagger Pole BG is also a great pickup, just from later in the 50's.  Any of them will give a good sound with a humbucker, but for the sound you are after I would go with the Brown Sugar.
So many pickups, so little time

I think that it might be the weather, but I'm lusting after a tele...

I was thinking about this though...

BKPs Past and Present - Nailbombs, Mules, Blackguard Flat 50's, VHII's & Trilogy Suite with Neck & Bridge Baseplates!

Cheers horsey, I'll check it out.

I think I may pick one of these up to do a "Rich Robinson" on.  They're already routed for a neck humbucker...

Squier Classic Vibe Tele

That's the pine one, isn't it?  Looks nice, even has proper vintage-style tuners.

Any idea of cost?  (he says, too lazy to Google it)

A white blond finish, maple neck and black pickguard is my dream tele. I saw a very tasty Suhr one recently, but that Squier looks justt as good for a fraction of the cost.

Look away Philly, just found this on tdpri:

"Okay, here are the downsides: they tend to be pretty heavy and the have "Squire" on the headstock. If you can live with those two things, you would be a fool not to give one a try. They also only come in one color, but I swapped the black pickguard for white and it just looks killer!"

Otherwise this guy puts it right up there with the expensive ones in his 30 tele collection!

Still looks like we've got a bit of a wait in the UK though  :?

EDIT: WOT HAVE YOU DONE TWINFAN??!! I just realised I was quite happy with my little Alice (baja) and various other guitars, I'd even forgotten these things were in the pipeline... and in the space of 6 hours you've converted me to man-on-a-mission (find CV tele, try CV tele, buy CV tele, preferably while wife is out of country on holiday with her friend so I have time to get properly acquainted...)

Rich Robinson's main tele is a blonde '64 so I think Yarbird's even?

The new Squire looks sweet, almost too good to be true. Hopefully the necks feel right like the Baja and pine I think is a good choice.  Will it be solid?

I'm already planning the tweeks.....new pots and caps, BK Blackguards, Wilkinson Bridge, 4 way switch, and it's still less than £400.
