(not tempted to mount them in an X pattern?)
No, I wanted to be able to switch the cab in stereo & just use the CL80s or just the K100s.
If I stand to one side of the cab then move to the other there's a
subtle difference. I'm going to have a go at an A/B comparison between the two sides tomorrow, but my impression is that these two speakers compliment each other nicely & are a huge improvement on my Mesa 2x12 cab.
Don't get me wrong - I
LIKE Vintage 30s & have used them for years. But while Vintage 30s in a Mesa cab are great with the dark/dense/loose & slightly "spongy" sound of the Rectifier, with the Savage I felt that the top end was a little hard & that I could get a much better sound from it with something else. Now I've found it :D
One thing I didn't expect was how much better the Savage's CLEAN channel sounds in this cab. I often use an MXR Chorus to warm up my cleans but with the Savage & Mesa cab I always felt that I
needed to use it (the MXR will warm up just about anything :)) Now, I can happily play clean without the chorus.
FWIW, the stock V12-60s weren't bad at all (there have been a few negative comments on this forum about them). I'm tempted to get another one of these cabs at some point & leave it stock for an alternate sound. But I fell in love with CL80s years ago & have always wanted them in a closed back cab.
