Take one of these

+ two of these:

+ two of these:

= mega mental metal cab of DOOM!

I've been stuck on 999 posts for ages (was determined to save #1000 for this) but the speakers took forever to arrive! :(  I finally wired it up last night & have been playing all morning.  I cannot believe how awesome this sounds :)

I'm still in the "euphoric" stage right now, so can't make sensible objective comment  but first impressions are that this combination is absolutely ideal for my Engl Savage.  Yes, there will be clips... :)

(not tempted to mount them in an X pattern?)

No, I wanted to be able to switch the cab in stereo & just use the CL80s or just the K100s.

If I stand to one side of the cab then move to the other there's a subtle difference.  I'm going to have a go at an A/B comparison between the two sides tomorrow, but my impression is that these two speakers compliment each other nicely & are a huge improvement on my Mesa 2x12 cab.

Don't get me wrong - I LIKE Vintage 30s & have used them for years.  But while Vintage 30s in a Mesa cab are great with the dark/dense/loose & slightly "spongy" sound of the Rectifier, with the Savage I felt that the top end was a little hard & that I could get a much better sound from it with something else.  Now I've found it :D

One thing I didn't expect was how much better the Savage's CLEAN channel sounds in this cab.  I often use an MXR Chorus to warm up my cleans but with the Savage & Mesa cab I always felt that I needed to use it (the MXR will warm up just about anything :))  Now, I can happily play clean without the chorus.

FWIW, the stock V12-60s weren't bad at all (there have been a few negative comments on this forum about them).  I'm tempted to get another one of these cabs at some point & leave it stock for an alternate sound.  But I fell in love with CL80s years ago & have always wanted them in a closed back cab.

classic lead 80s are great and totally under-rated, I'd have them in a heartbeat if was gigging in a 'heavy' band. as it stands, my 55Hz bass cone G12H-30s cover pretty much anything.

That's possibly the most brutal cab i've ever seen.

Looks fab, but I know nothing about either of those drivers.

Can someone educate me?

Well, I guess you could start with the manufacturer's spec pages here & here

Also, this review helped a lot.

the original g12-80 was a g12-65 with a heavy magnet and slightly beefed up coil. i've never played one, but it sounds well tasty to me from that description.

of course the classic lead is a sort of version of that. from pieceing together internet rumours, i think that means a vintage 30 with a large dust cap and slightly beefed up coil. again a tasty description... but this time i have played a modern classic lead 80 for a bit on 'strange' gear. it sounded like my v30/g12h 2x12 would if it were a 1x12. i'd like a classic lead 80 in a 1x12.

some people say the g12-80 and the classic lead 80 sound quite different, i suppose you might expect that from the descriptions i just gave (which i'm open to correction on) - but they must have a roughly similar coil rigidity and they both have a large dust cap. and of course they both have that 'H' magnet. one might draw rough comparisons of the g12-65 and the v30 cones as being classic celestion-y, but that surely is where the difference lies - well, i reckon anyway :)
