It happens all the time, i don't like walking back from the pub on my own at the early hours of the morning because you never know what will happen. TBH, i wouldn't care that much if i knew they didn't have a knife (or even a gun) but i feel like if i fight back it is more likely that they will shank me up because they can't handle people fighting back, if im with my mates and someone starts something we won't back down we will take them on and usually they just $%&# off. But the knife stuff bugs me.

+1 glad to hear you weren't seriously hurt. It's coming to something when you can't walk around at night without having to consider anyone walking on the same side of the street as a potential threat.

Something similar happened to me last month; heading home from my brother's house at midnight, two young chavs started following me asking for cigarettes etc. It was fairly obvious what was about to go down, but there were no real exit routes for me once they started keeping pace with me, so I waited until we were walking past a large grassy area and stepped from the pavement onto the grass to reduce the likelihood of getting a concussion when they attacked me.

One chav produced a glass bottle and demanded money and phone etc, and the other tried to grab my backpack; as he did, the first raised the bottle, so I stepped in as close to him as I could to reduce his swing length, and tilted my head down to protect my face. The bottle hit me just over the hairline and cracked rather than smashing, so I got a cut about an inch long - it bled a lot but didn't go deep and at the time I barely even felt it due to adrenaline. After that there was a short brawl (40 seconds at most) and then they ran off, leaving me in possession of my bag, wallet and phone, but drenched in blood from head to toe and feeling rather unamused by the whole performance. Some dude walking down to town saw me and called an ambulance, the police were there in under a minute and by 4am I was back home and laughing about it online with my friends.

The worst part of the night was how boring it is to sit in A&E waiting to be seen, especially when you look like something out of Hellraiser. Two days later I was bombing down a street on my skateboard and hit a crisp packet, resulting in some road rash that hurt a hell of a lot more than being glassed. :D

glad to hear you're ok, it'd be no fun getting mugged.

i disagree vehemently with bringing back corporal punishment, i was scared enough of some of our teachers without their being able to cane us (and i was one of the good kids). sufficient numbers of teachers seemed to enjoy what power they had without giving them more... at the end of the day stricter laws just end up pissing off the more law-abiding anyway, while the real "baddies" either don't care, or else are more adept in not getting caught. my parents were both teachers, so it's not like i'm biased against teachers; less suing would help, but i certainly wouldn't go so far as to allow them to cane again.

not entirely sure how to solve the issue, but a knee-jerk reactionary policy change is unlikely to fix anything, and could likely make things worse. more cops on the street would likely help. that'd cost money of course.

My dad's cousin (bouncer, 6ft 2, built like tank) got attacked by some nutter (6ft 4, built like a tank) so my dad's cousin dropped the nut on him twice (put him down like a dog) and got 3 years in prison. The guy just looked at him across the street and came at him! It's such an unfair system. So when I hit 18 I`ll be cautious.

Cant say I've had any problems like that living in the city at uni. Mind you thats only Leicester which is apparently one of the safest cities in england or something? Worst I had is some guy drive past slowly, try to look menacing then threw an egg which missed by about a metre or so, somehow bounced off the wall and didnt even smash

I've been mugged once, i say mugged, they made off with my hoodie which came off when i was fighting one of them lol and no blows we actually thrown just pushing around. They tried to grab my phone and all that but i said no $%&# off you can't have it. My mates were also getting attempted mugged but they didn't get anything off them either so they completely failed. No damage done whatsoever, or stolen apart from the hoodie by accident. But when i think back on it they could easily have had a knife and things could have gone so much worse. The worst part was i knew one of the guys with the people who were trying to mug us, plus he is hench and could have taken them all on, but he sort of ignored that he knew us because he didn't want to damage his rep by helping us out. :x

I could really rant here, but will try not to

gwEm, atleast you are alright, a bit worrying that you pushed him so far as saying to slice you though.

I think its all these chavs who think they can all be pro footballers, so don't get jobs / qualifications that cause a lot of the issues.
I am also in one of the safer locations, and a few years ago walked back 8 miles from the train station after a gig in the middle of the night, my mate turned down a lift out of principle though. long walk, but fine.
Next week someone was stabbed 500yds away from the railway station.

Gypsies are an issue around here and present similar issues, but CAN'T be charged as they have no permanenet address: get away with everything. set fire to a field of wheat a few weeks ago. will have cost £200 and the fire engine soaked the field.

People $%&#ing piss me off at times. No, I do not associate myself with these kind of people.

Glad to hear you're alright gwEm.

Seeing as i'm a (semi)young person on this forum, i thought i'd give a small story.

When i was in school, there was a guy who had pissed me off since primary school up to 4th year (when he left). He was a real loser, and although he never physically harmed me, once he left me and my mates saw him doing community service (not sure what for) so decided to shout a few sly comments his way. That was a good feeling.

Another one that i've just remembered was when a little ned who thought he was a hard man, tried shouting racist remarks at a lad who was half black (or something like that, i forget exactly) and a year above him. The guy then grabbed him by his shirt, lifted him up and smacked him repeatidly against a window, then he erupted in tears.

Not that i condone anyone do either of these, because of knife crime, but it shows that these people generally are cowards, and will (hopefully) get their just desserts.
Driving in my car, smoking my cigar, the only time i'm happys when i'm playing my guitar!

Dropped the nut on him twice to stop continued attacks (self defence)

Just to translate for Fernando - "dropped the nut" I assume means head-butted.

All these stories do make me very depressed.  I'm very glad I don't go out at all these days to pubs/clubs etc, except for gigs, and I always travel straight there and back in my car. That way, I do seem to be isolated from the violence.
I don't really have any useful comments to make, but the whole thing does make me very worried for my children, and their generation.  :(

I'm 26 and the people who mostly do this are not that much younger than me.

I too could go off on a massive rant about this because I feel very strongly about knife crime and other "bully" type crimes as a whole. But I will keep this short and sweet otherwise I'll be here for hours, lol.

I'm really glad you kept your head and you weren't hurt dude, that really is the main thing and it sounds like you handled the situation with a level of maturity that these c**ts can only dream of.

As I say, this is a subject close to my heart. I really hope this year and next year I can get my band well known on the gig circuit and do a lot of all ages shows because some of my songs are about fighting this kind of thing and trying to instil a sense of honour and respect among the younger generations. So hopefully I'll be setting up a lot of all-day all ages shows with the aim of highlighting these issues and getting it out there among the kids that, no, it's NOT cool.

Problems like this are not solved by sending them off to juvenile units or giving out Asbo's, it's about changing the way these people think. And lord knows, no politician or Police liaison is going to get through to these kids. It's up to musicians to use their influence amongst these kids to send out the right messages.

Oh thank you!
That "Zidane" attack...

And yes Ham, I see no way things get better, but worse... That's one of the reasons that I don't want to have kids...
