someone just tried to mug me - slight
« on: September 20, 2008, 02:52:07 AM »
oh dear...

so i don't normally post on internet forums under the infuence of alcohol, but i must get this down.

a friend of mine and i were drinking at the three crowns on city road, i'd had four pints and a jd and coke, but that hardly matters. obviously some w**kers in the pub saw two guys wearing glasses getting slightly pissed and decided to follow us. they must have been about 22 y/o i reckon. anyway, approaching old street roundabout they started husselling us, trying to start some sort of fight. one of them was slightly built looking, but his mate was really skrawny and easily 'haveable' so to speak. anyway, they started to try and entice us into some sort of fight and we were like 'no mate'. there was lots of people around and the whole thing was really absurd. after a while they tried to drag me down an alley, but i wasn't really feeling that drunk, and they didn't seem that strong so i dragged myself back to my mate and we kept walking. then they bullshiteeeeeeted us that they has some sort of knife action going down, and i said 'go on then, slice me up'. this sort of stalemate kept on and then they got bored and $%&#ed off.

now obviously these guys were lamers... if they'd wanted to mug us, they'd have silently followed us until we split up and then picked on one of us when it was quiet. feeling slightly shaken at the moment thinking what if they had been pro, it would have been so easy for them, the other half of me is jubilant at beating these really super-lamer would be muggers. anyway, it makes you think doesn't it. so much violence around these days. really wound up now, not sure i'll sleep. can understand what its like to be really mugged a bit more now.

I am glad you are OK -the vermin that infest our streets are tiresome.Trouble is, as you alluded to, they can have weapons and things can turn deadly in a blink. I hope you managed to find some sleep.

I wouldn't dwell on it too much, sadly our society is full of scum.
We live in a country that has a lot of wealth in it and that sadly means lots of idiots try and mug people
Well done for keeping your wits (and wallet) about you

Seems to be getting all too common, doesn't it?

Sounds like you and your mate handled the situation really well.  Good on ya.

When I was 11 or 12 and out with a 'girlfriend' in Bath (where I used to live before Hull, when I was 14), we were stopped down a small backstreet (in the middle of the day) by a pair of losers. They said "give us your money", and I told them I didn't have any (which happened to be true!). They even tried to get me to jump up and down to see if I had any coins in my pocket, but I took out my wallet and showed them how bare it was.

Ever since then, I've had a pathological hatred of thieves, burglars and muggers. It really is a good thing the way you handled that situation, because I think I'd have seen red. That said, I don't know, because I've thankfully never been in that situation since then.

Certainly I was very wound up as a pre-teen faced with that kind of thing!

Glad you got out of the situation OK.

I've had a few similar-ish incidents over the years, threatening behaviour that ultimately didn't lead to anything, but it leaves you feeling quite shaken-up afterwards.  After all, who knows if they might have produced a knife or something?  And even if they didn't, it's a very alien situation for most of us to find ourselves in.

Ever since then, I've had a pathological hatred of thieves, burglars and muggers.

Don't we all.  It makes me really angry that there are people who basically devote their whole lives to giving other people grief.  What sort of arsehole can go to sleep at night feeling happy that they've robbed or hurt someone?  It might be actual violence, it might be aggressive behaviour, mouthing off or even just intimidating body language, but why can't they just f*ck off and leave everyone else alone?

I'm glad that you are alright G
Things are starting to get a bit out of hand I think
We have had two stabbings within 200 yards of us over the last 7 days
One was the high profile one where a black kid died and the other was a scuffle between some expelled school kids going to a  school referral unit round the corner, which ended up with one getting stabbed in the head and being rushed off to hospital.

The weird thing for us here is that South Croydon is typically a sleepy little place apart from having lots of restaurants.
It has always been pretty middle class and white and I'd have to say that all the trouble that we have comes visiting.

My young colleague had his best mate mugged the night before after leaving his house - he lives in Tulse Hill- not far from Brixton so I find myself less surprised but still concerned.

It is like all the stupid teenagers are responding to the concerns about knife crime by getting a knife and going out to get some action before the long arm of the law gets too heavy in retaliation.
I bet the younger guys on here are sick of these types either at school or college or even being regarded as being in the same social grouping as them

cheers guys! i didn't sleep too much in the end, was very wound up. one thing which i didn't notice last night is that i have a bruise in my ribs where one of them punched me. last night it seemed like the lamest punch ever, a bit like a wet paper bag, didn't even think about it too much. obviously i was more tipsy than i thought. the situation was humourous in alot of ways, and i'll be choosing to remember that side of the story for the future. talking to my mate on the phone afterwards we fancied our chances against them, but you never know if their big talk about knives was actually true (i suspect not in this case) and a hospital is a place to be avoided.

it is tiresome, and sadly seems to be becoming more common, i'm just angry they feel the need to do that sort of thing. i remember a story on here a few months ago where some was actually mugged for real... and not to forget all the recent posts on here about equipment theft.

and this with the credit crunch, food crisis, hospital superbugs... i'm a usually optimistic person, up for a party, but its a fairly depressing country we live in at the moment.

Good point, I'd be interested to know what the younger chaps think.  I have to admit it's hard for me not to lump all young people in the same bracket, even though I know it's not true.  :(

+1, bloody hell, my school has just got huge groups of chavs that sit around school, don't go to lessons, and just mouth off anyone that walks past. It's $%&#ing ridiculous.

I just walk past them laughing my head off with the simple knowledge, that as I get good qualifications, a good job and make a life for myself, these tw@ts are gunna end up sweeping my streets or locked up.

It is really crazy back there now.  Going into grandad mode, I remember in the early 80's you could walk from the city to the west end in the middle of the night by yourself with no problems (I know because I've done it a couple of times), but now it is asking for trouble.   I have a friend who was 'gay bashed' about 6 months ago near Piccadilly Circus on her way home (she is a bartender).   I notice the difference every time I am back.  It used to be that crime in the UK was way less than over in the States, but now it seems that there is more random violent crime there (and in other areas of Europe), than there is here.  Short of bringing back conscription and having an old time trench war to cull the herd, I'm not sure what the solution is.  I did read that we now have a generation where the kids run the parents, and unfortunately I think that all the liberalism and cutting down on discipline for kids didn't help.  If the teachers can't keep order in the classroom, then after that there will be problems in life for everyone, since most jobs have a hierarchy and orders that need to be followed.  So my mantra is bring back corporal punishment and let the teachers run the classes without worrying about being sued (yes I know some will abuse the power, but I think that is less of an issue than the problems we have now).

Long rant over.

Glad you are OK G. and I think that you need to get out for a drink again soon to recover from the experience!!

+1, In the end they are the losers. Some chavs in school were pushing their 'friend' into me saying "oh go see your mosher friend" so I just flipped and nailed this kid into a wall and he banged his head and cried

I would imagine that the young people on this forum are as repelled by these people who commit these crimes as the rest of us are. I just think that  I would think twice about retaliation becuase of the propensity to carry knives. Probably like others hear I have had encounters -Like Roo I was 12 when I had my first and I ended up ashamed and humiliated even though the two who carried out the crime were both at least 16 and I stood no chance. My Dad was the sort of person who would say that you should stick up for yourself and fight back but even he now errs on the side of caution and says that no mobile phone or  money is worth getting stabbed for.The younger members of my family are as appalled by this as we are -my eldest son was attacked on the way home from work and beaten up by a gang of 8 local kids.He felt humilated as they were all younger than him but not may could take on those odds when attacked from behind. Indeed it was the even that made him decide to emigrate as it was not the first time he'd seen it so now thanks to that scum, I don't get to see him very much. I think the miost hopeless thing of all though is that we are powerless to stop them.In our case the police were useless- a quick response would have enabled them to apprehend those responsible but they didn't make it and in spite of our knowing the identity they said that there was not enough evidence.

Sorry to hear this happened mate, but I'm glad you managed to avoid any serious trouble. I must admit that the increase in violence in the UK in the last 2 or 3 years has me seriously questioning whether I want to move back or not.   :(
